is it worth rooting a phone?

its not any trouble. it takes, maybe, 30 minutes of your time. it is more than worth it, after you root, the possibilities are endless. do it, do it now is all i can say. i was like you before, but now, my hero would not be the same with out it. root it, flash fresh 1.1, flash the gumbo kernal, and dl setcpu. you really will not believe the difference. if you think your hero is addictive now, wait til you do all this to it

It took me 2 months to finally go ahead and root my phone. I really was happy with the way it ran. I got the itch bad the last few days and went ahead and did it. It really isnt hard at all, you just have to read the directions and understand what you are doing before you start.

I like many others, installed Fresh 1.1, I really didnt notice a difference right away besides a few theme changes. I switched back to the stock ROM for about a couple days and decided to give it another shot. This time I went for Modaco 2.0 and was happy with that one. It had a few quirks so I went back to Fresh, with the updated Gumbo Kernel, and it is very nice now. I liked the modified theme and lockscreen from MCR that I had better, but stability was more important to me.

Again, its not a lot of trouble at all, just read and do it.

All depends. Not sure if you saw my video in the other thread, but my Hero is just as fast if not faster than any rooted Hero I have seen and mine is stock. Look around on this forum and most you find with people complaining about hardware that suddenly stops working, apps disappearing, not being able to hard reset and dozens more problems are coming from people with rooted phones and flashed ROMs.

Pretty much the only complaints you will hear from stock Hero users is the phone lags, but hey, at least everything WORKS! If you are happy with the speed and performance on your phone, no real reason to root and flash. If you want to pick up a slight increase in speed, go ahead.

...or if you want to manage your cpu for performance or better battery life
...or if you want to wifi tether and not use PDAnet
...or if you want to customize themes

Nice vids, by the way, mbell!

ok... so probably the only reason I would root is to give myself BT OBEX file transfer capability. I will ask here lazily, rather than looking for the information myself. I haven't kept up with all the updates in the ROM's and now this Gumbo Kernel update. Has BT File issues been addressed in any of them? If not, I will probably wait still...

Thanks... :)

Amazing. There are MANY more threads with people complaining about their STOCK ROM PHONES than there are with those who have rooted and now have Custom Roms.

Starting to get a little suspicious here...........

In your video your hero is pretty snappy. The place where i saw huge improvement with the root, kernel, setcpu setup was in areas like pulling the "manage applications" screen. It takes 7 seconds now for all the apps to load where before it was more like 30.

Ummm, thats because there are MANY more people with STOCK ROM PHONES than ROOTED phones out there  I would say probably 70% of the problems I have seen here since I have joined have been from people rooted and/or running custom ROMs. Friend of mine had his camera stop working and took it to the local Sprint service store. They looked at it, told him it was because he had flashed the phone and refused to work on it because it had been "modified", thus voiding his warranty. They can also tell if its been flashed or rooted and then put back on the stock ROM. So basically, you are taking a big risk and its not worth it IMO.

we all know thats not true IF YOU GO BACK STO STOCK UN-ROOTED USING THE SPRINT RUU there is no way anyone can tell, maybe your freind was still rooted but had the stock rom on it. Iv'e gone to the sprint(service center) store MANY times after RUU'ing and the havent noticed anything at all

+1.

Easy to do but was of no advantage for me.

This really isn't that difficult of a decision to make.

There are numerous threads already on this issue. Read through them. By now, they will most likely have answered every question you have.

However, I will summarize:

Does your phone lag in apps? Keyboard? Dialer?

Are you unsatisfied with your battery life?

Do you want to use WIFI tether?

Do you want COMPLETE control over your phone and not just limited control?

If you answered yes to any of those questions you are candiate for rooting.

Remember: Rooting will accomplish you nothing other than gaining complete control over your phone. It is the custom roms, kernels, etc., that give you the increased performance.

And yes, you can ALWAYS RETURN to stock rom.
