Hi All,

I have just come across this tool on xda, and looks too good to be true...

[TOOL] Advanced Ace Hack Kit (UPDATED 26-09-2011) - xda-developers

Does the goldcard for you, roots, radio s-off, sim unlock etc all with one script. Looking at the thread, it works for a lot of people and I think I might try it out.

Has anyone tried to use this? The only concern I have is that the majority of people using it are in the USA using AT&T, and when you run the script it changes the radio (not sure what to) so will I be able to use my phone ok after? Seems like changing the radio can be a big deal...

EDIT: It is not specifically designed for AT&T phones, and apparently will not link the phone to AT&T whatsoever after it is rooted

Not sure... changing the radio can be a big deal if you do it without enough battery power, as that is how you can end up with a brick.

Rooting is actually not that difficult - especially using the newer methods (if you're already on Gingerbread)... seems to be a lot easier than when I rooted.

If you do that and the radio isn't right, you can always flash a different radio once you're rooted... again, by all accounts, that isn't as hard as it sounds, just a bit daunting for first timers!

Never seen it used on the DHD, it's discussed a little here: http://androidforums.com/inspire-4g-all-things-root/419437-simple-root-xda-9-23-11-a.html

That's the Inspire 4G forum and it's my understanding that the 4G is just the American, 4G variant of our handset. It could work, but there might be subtle differences between our software and that of the Inspire.

It says "ACE Hack Kit" and HTC call the DHD the Ace so 90% of me says it would work, but I wouldn't want to give you a concrete yes, just in case it didn't work and you bricked your phone ;).

Thanks for the replies :) As far as I know everything is done while the phone is plugged in, so I don't think there will be much of a chance of the battery going while it's flashing a new radio.

The issue I have with rooting the normal way is that I have pretty much no access to a windows computer (Use ubuntu at work and OSX and home), and nearly all guides I have seen involve using one. The ace hack kit will work on both of those OS's. Plus the whole goldcard then downgrading thing seems like a bit of an arduous process :p

That's what I would have thought... as I said, it's not that hard to root... just seems quite daunting! :)

Indeed, it seems pretty lengthy, but it's not that hard.

The radio flash is done while the phone is in fastboot and the phone won't charge in fastboot.

Aye, the goldcard thing does appear to be the biggest pain in the proverbials. Like I say, I'm nearly certain it would work, but it's up to you if you try it.

That's the part that took me the longest... I'd tried doing it using HEX Editting... didn't seem to work - could have been the SD card I was trying to use though!

I ended up using the SD card that came with the phone and using goldcard helper and goldcard tool... worked a treat!

The root process was then pretty straight forward... I did worry the whole time though!! :D

Thanks for the info :) If I decide to do it then I will make sure I have enough battery.

I have found the developers IRC channel, so I think it's worth me asking on there to see if it's compatible. I did also see in the changelog that it has previously been updated for 'EU DHD' so i'm confident.

I will post my findings once I have spoken to them, and if it works then this could be a very good tool for root newbies like myself :)

So i've spoken to some of the devs and I have had this response -

Me: "is all data on the SD card wiped when it creates the goldcard? (Like in the normal goldcard making process of having to format the card etc)"

Them: "I believe it works with eu dhd, and your sdcard is safe"

Me: "so no data lost at all?"

Them: "nope"

So I reckon I might take the plunge and go for it, you know, for science :) If I do i'll let you know how it goes

Not sure... changing the radio can be a big deal if you do it without enough battery power, as that is how you can end up with a brick.

Unless you have one of the earliest DHD roms, the radio downgrade is required to expose the exploit used for gfree. A current, appropriate Froyo or GB radio is restored before the process completes.

yes it works on DHD, not just the inspire. I have recently added DHD boot images so that when the process completes, everything is working as it was, with full root, radio S-OFF, and SuperCID and SIM unlock. We have confirmation of several DHDs from around the world.

The ACE Hack Kit is the only solution that not only fully automates the entire goldcard process, but does it so quickly you don't even realize there IS a goldcard process. It generates the goldcard image and writes it to the sdcard with no data loss in the blink of an eye.

Rooted without a problem :D :D

Took about 5 mins (using OSX Leopard) and booted fine, complete with superuser, cwm etc.

So there you have it, the easiest method I have come across after lots of searching

If adb and fastboot are working properly, then the entire process completes somewhere between 5 and 6 minutes, completely hands off. Linux, OSX and Windows are supported, with the best method (because you are guarranteed a clean env) is to use the Ubuntu LiveCD. The whole thing can be kicked off with a single command in ubuntu - no drivers to consider.

If there are any questions or issues running this tool, help is available at freenode IRC channel #liberatedAria

Thanks for the look.

+1 on that!! :D

Perhaps a link to the tool would be worth putting in your "how to" on rooting El P!?!

attn1 - does this downgrade all builds up to Gingerbread?

There is a link to the thread maintained for it in the OP. In that thread is a link to the tool.

It should work on all current releases that require downgrade, both froyo and gingerbread.

I have no idea what unreleased versions of GB will bring.

I am still getting the Three UK start up screen, but as far as I can tell it should have done the sim unlock/goldcard etc. Is this normal?

Also, i'm getting a bit confused about flashing a new rom. Do I need ENG S-OFF in order to do this? I check on the bootloader and mine says 'ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF RL' but that's it. There's so many different ways to do it all i'm getting a bit muddled up here

No, you don't *need* ENG hboot (S-OFF) for anything. It's easy enough to to add.

Your original rom should be intact, and it's branding has nothing to do with sim lock, or lack of as gfree should have removed the carrier lock on the phone. The radio S-OFF gfree provides and custom recovery is all most users should ever need.

Ok great, thanks :) Onward to Android Revolution I go!

By the way, I was the guy who was on your irc for ages last night trying the tool out on an eu dhd, but unfortunately I can't post on the xda thread to say that it worked (I don't have enough overall posts to be able to post on there) so if anyone can spread the word that would be great

Just flashed to CM7 :) It turned itself on and carried on downloading.

Finally rooted and have a new ROM, been waiting to do this for so long :)

Does it make a huge difference to flash the recommended radio? I don't really want to do it unless it makes an enormous difference. Will the current radio I have decrease battery life?

I've been running CM7 for 5/6 months and never changed the radio from the one that came with stock... you should be fine. I know that some have flashed radios... but that's 'cos they've had other roms (and flashed the radio recomended by the dev)... see how it behaves as is and, if you think it's not that great, then look at flashing a radio!

As you've just flashed a new rom... don't forget to calibrate the battery - just download a battery calibration app from the market, charge up fully (usually the app will alert you once the battery's not accepting any more charge) and then the app lets you reset the battery stats, so the phone knows when the battery is fully charged! :)
