Not sure if any of you have been following this but the folks at SlateDroid have been working on porting a true Honeycomb kernel for our gtab. Looks like there has been major progress. Here's the latest update...

[9/21/2011]
Treznorx reports working wifi, HD youtube and a couple other features. No sound and wonky touchscreen. Check out posts on page 16. I believe this is on 2.6.36

Hopefully I can update this thread when it is released for our gtabs! :D

Do you know if we will be able to flash this kernal over Flashback 8.1 or will i have to wipe everything to do it?

Yeah probably another couple of Weeks but by that time ICS might be out lol. Jk:p

this is all they have left to fix

todo : wakelocks, PM, fix long hold on pwr button, fix USB so it works without workaround, fix battery fuel guage, fix media buffering, fix mmc so it static maps to avoid SD card issues at boot, and last but not least the crappy camera...

im looking foward to ICS too bad it will be a long time till a ICS rom is made and stable enough for our tabs by then "strawberry shortcake" will be out.(made up name for comic effect) :)

LOL. Yeah it'll take time. I just hope it's doable but I don't think it'll be too much of a problem if the ICS AOSP is released.

What will this new kernel do for my gtab? Im new to the whole tablet world and keep seeing recomendations to upgrade the ROM

What is the difference between a kernel and ROM?

The kernel is what interacts directly with the hardware of the tablet. Since Viewsonic won't give us an official Honeycomb ROM a few have been ported from similar tablets but we have been forced to use the kernel that was designed for froyo or gingerbread. Since the hardware in those tablets is not 100% identical to ours it uses a different kernel.

In short a ROM is the part that you interact with. The user interface.

Right now all of the HC roms have issue because we lack the proper kernel. Flashback is a great rom as it stands right now. Throw in a working kernel and this tablet will be awesome.

So basically my best bet is to wait until this honeycomb kernel is released and use that with Flashback? What is the time frame on that happening?

When this does happen, is someone going to walk me through this? I'm sure I will need the help!

Well, the HC ROMS right now even without this native kernel is pretty stable. Might as well get yourself acquainted with the ROM installation process.

Here's where you can begin and you can ask your questions there when you start flashing.

http://androidforums.com/gtablet-all-things-root/242459-how-root-install-custom-rom-fix-market-add-flash.html

You can prepare by finding out what stock rom you are running because it's important. Go to your settings>about tablet> and find out what firmware you are on.

If it's a number lower than or equal to FW 3588, then you are on a 1.1 Bootloader or older. If it's over FW 3588, then you are on Bootloader 1.2.

That'll be the key to your journey. :D

i agree with xmr405o, give it a try, the honeycomb roms are stable. for flash you will have to use the opera browser, camera wont work and you wont be able to watch HD video till the new kernel comes out which looks like it might work best with flashback when it first comes out but you can go with either flashback or gtabcomb if you like. flashback seems more stable at the moment. if you need help just ask. you will have to learn nvflash though

It doesn't look like it's ready for prime time yet. Here are the last few thread updates...

Hello all, Ch3vr0n5 here

The GTab Kernel Dev Team would like to chronicle our development process for everyone to enjoy. The Gtablet kernel project is an effort to run honeycomb with full access to the power of our device. (HW Acceleration)

The Dev team is currently: A whole bunch of people :) I'll actually include everyone when I have more than five minutes on the computer. You know who you are.

[11/10/11]
I figured it was about time for an update. Mayday_jay is working on the power button long press issue I believe. Hopefully I will hear from him soon. I was able to get Mass Storage working over USB however apps still don't see the internal card even though the system does. Should have Micro SD working soon and hopefully internal memory for the whole system. More in the future =D

Ok, I have been gone for a while dealing with stuff but the dev team has been trucking along and we have new contributors. Currently I think we are actually moving to a 2.6.38.3 base instead of 2.6.36.3 because it just likes our tablet much better. Yay! rootfs Ubuntu is booting and touchscreen works with wifi so I feel we are closer to our end goal, booting android and having full HW acceleration. Hope to post a more in depth update later when I get a few minutes to get back into the game. Check page ten (I think) for a youtube video showing Ubuntu running.

Yup there's still hope. Just more waiting. My gtab has been in hibernation lol.

I just got a new phone so i have been messing with that but I am looking forward to getting my gtab running perfect.

They are saying once the power button and something else I can't think of right now is fixed they will release a alpha. I can't wait.

As of right now I have pushed my gtab as far as it can go until it comes out.

i just installed flashback and cannot download any apps from the market? any suggestions?

Try going to your recovery. Clear data. Then restart. When the honeycomb setup comes up don't enter your gmail address just exit out. Then open the market and when it asked you to enter your email do it. It should work, if it doesn't let me know and I have 1 more idea

Update: it seems as if this kernel is being turned into an ICS kernel since it will be much easier.

The reason for this is that Google did not release the source for honeycomb but the source code is out for ICS. Information on this is in the link on post #2

Just more waiting...patience is the key. haha. (that's what I tell myself)
