from hero to droid is it worth it?

Hi i was thinking of selling my hero and getting me a droid. Reasons: hero's agoodphone but lacks speed and fluidity; On screen keyboard can be a major frustration; In my opinion droid has better signal reception. I write from Italy. Here the droid is called milestone. Additional question: how do you judge the luminosity of the screen? Is It too bright as I heard? If so, given the size it might put the eyes under strain. Can you make It dim enough? Thank u for sharing your opinions.

Well heres my opinion of the Droid. Although many people on this board praise it to be the new coming of the iPhone-Destroyer, it really isn't. Rather, it is on par with the iPhone in my opinion. The Droid isn't too fluid in its movements, etc. It actually lags sometimes and has force closes, etc. Even if you root in and overclock, you will see some stuttering and things such as that. Also, the keyboard is a majorly debated issue. Some see it as a terrible feature, while others praise it. In my opinion, it takes practice and dedication to master, then you should be smooth sailing.

Now lets go to some positives eh? The Droid is one of those phones where you can just play around with it. The Droid has many apps and features that you can unlock with the Marketplace and also by rooting.

Your questions.
1. Droid will not have a better reception. Motorola is known to have poor reception.
2. You can turn down brightness. I do it. The screen is so good that it sometimes hurts.
3. The fluidity will be similar to the hero. Maybe a tad bit better.

I don't know what the guy above me is talking about but the Droid is the best phone I ever had. In comparison to the Hero the droid is way better, and the screen is beautiful. I'm not gonna lie there is some force close issues once in a while if you're running too many apps, just watch how many tasks you're doing and you'll be ok. As for phone quality. Ive had the best phone quality i've ever had with my phone. No issues with making phone calls or signal for me. I've just installed the sholes uploader app in the market to my Droid and boy this phone now makes the iPhone 3gs look like a play toy. I love this thing! The most important reason though to make the switch is that there is more support for the Droid than the other android phones because it's the most popular.

I had an Eris for two months (same as a Hero, essentially) and switched to a Droid and haven't looked back.

You won't regret it.

I also had an Eris, which is similar to a Hero but not the same phone. After 2 weeks I exchanged it for a droid. The Eris (and Hero) is a good phone. But the lag was too much. The droid also has a bit of lag--for example, switching to phone mode and dialing will not feel "one to one" like a regular phone. But then again, it's not a regular phone. The droid is faster, the screen is better, and it has a keyboard, which I like. The hero is smaller and lighter. With a case the droid is huge--I go case-less now and worry about scratching/dropping it. As for screen brightness, don't worry about it, you can change it to suit your needs.

The droid is an awesome devise but a mediocre phone. The hero is a good phone, but a mediocre wireless devise.

I'm going to have to disagree with that statement. In fact, I can almost guarantee you that the Motorola will have superior reception to the HTC product.

You have your facts switched around. Moto's been making radios since the 50's. Their cellphones, while in recent years subpar, have always had excellent reception and call quality, and the Droid is no exception.

That's what I'm saying. When I had my envy my reception sucked in my house but since getting my droid it has been excellent. No problems.

Yep Droid and Nexus are really the two powerhouses right now. I haven't heard a single complaint from a former Hero user on this board. And people love to complain sometimes

I love my Hero....it was the greatest phone that I ever had. I needed to switch carriers and I bought the Droid. While there is nothing "ultra new" about the droid overall I am much happier with the Droid.

Thank u all for your comments. I've never understood all this comparisons u find on the net between the iPhone and devices like the droid and the hero. IPhone is a glamorous toy for kids. No multitasking sucks. It means for example u have to close a document to open a dictionary if u have found a word u don't know. And when u r finished repeat process in reverse. And despite that u see a lot of comparison tests between the iPhone and all the other phones. For all the rest, I use the phone primarily for browsing, and I'm happy to hear the droid has good reception which I didn't doubt because I have also a Motorola v3 and I live In a bunker and the v3 has better reception than the hero. I'm writing now on the hero and geez it lags it took me 20 minutes to write this message. Hero is a beautiful device but the droidwith real keyboard is welcome. I'm going to love the droid.

Of course, there is no doubt the iPhone is a marvellous piece of hardware, but it depends on what you want: its for sure no smartphone.

I will also have to disagree with the "Motorola. Has poor reception" statement
I always have at least 2-3 bars on my Droid. Back when I used a Razor it was also common knowledge that it was great at reception. I have had the Hero and the Eris, both great smartphones, but not in the same league with the Droid. IMO. And they di not get as good as a signal. As far as the screen being to "luminous" that's not an issue at all with the brightness toggle. And it has a way better screen resolution. Swype is also a big plus.

Firstly, the droid is not too easy to find, secondly it lacks some features like Google maps, replaced by a 60-day trial period of nav. It also has half as much storage memory as the us version. To compensate, you get multitouch, but the us version can haveit through the dolphin browser which I use in my hero and find very good. On top of that, rumor has it that tech. support In Europe is also mediocre.

I think the reception on the droid is great because it works in places where my other smartphones don't like the school I work and it is my fast smartphone i have owned to date.

It's not a big deal. I can live without a billion gigas of memory and I'm confident telephone won't be dying on me any time soon. I'll go buy it one day next week. If reception is any better than the hero's than I am gonnabe able to change provider and spare some money on the bill. thank u all you convinced me (and also some reviews I've come across on the net of course)..

Have you thought about getting an unlocked N1? I know you would have to jump through some hoops but it works data works fine for all the euro carriers from what I have heard. There might be an issue with Orange but I think it's just a setting that needs changed.

I love this sholes mod. Was at the supermarket and I wanted to send a facebook message so as I was trying to go on the facebook full site from my phone I remember I had my itouch on me (with a much better facebook app) so I wiifi tethered my itouch and sent my facebook
message with ease. So now I have the best phone and a way to get the best facebook app. All I wanted from the droid.

This has never been the case in my experience. The Droid is the 4th straight Motorola phone I've had, and all of them have had excellent reception. Your post is not the first time I've read this, but it always surprises me as I've really had nothing but quality devices from Motorola.
