Root Has anybody rooted using this tool?

I'm a total newbie, but I wan't to try rooting, and will be giving ace hack kit a try on my DHD when it gets back from repair (the proximity sensor is defect now).

Anything in particular I should be aware of, or pay attention to, when its my first try in rooting?

What Rom is installed when ace hack kit has done all its magic?

Wan't to give MIUI a try, I'm looking very much forward to this :)

Hi, i'm a newbie here. I have read through the previous posts and also Advanced Ace Hack Kit with the Effen manual.

I'm from Malaysia, and really wish to root my DHD. There are few questions that still bother me before i start to root with the Hack kit:

1) Can the Hack Kit be used with the model i bought in Malaysia instead of EU?

2) there is a part in the Effen manual mention regarding 'install stock ATT radio'. But my DHD is not bound to ATT, so what should i do with that step?

Thanks for the help!!!

I can't help you with the first question, but in regards to the second -

2) there is a part in the Effen manual mention regarding 'install stock ATT radio'. But my DHD is not bound to ATT, so what should i do with that step?

You don't need to install any radio afterwards if you don't want to, that step is optional. Once you have run the tool and your phone is rooted, you can stop there, or install another ROM.

I have another couple of questions, i'll ask here instead of making a new thread..

1. I have backups of my previous rom that I made using Rom Manager. It is quite a large file and is taking up a lot of room on my SD card. Is it possible to remove it from my phone, but have a copy on my computer and when I need it just put it back in the right folder?

2. If I was to change my radio to a recommended one for a particular ROM, what happens if I change ROMs, and it is not the recommended radio for that rom? (So say I flashed the radio for CM7, but then I wanted to change roms to ARHD. Will the radio I flashed for CM7 cause a lot of trouble once I have changed roms?)
I am currently using CM 7.0.3, and was looking to update to 7.1.0 RC, but it says on the release notes that it is a good idea to change radios (although I can't find anywhere which radio I would need to change to.)

I've folder on my PC called Backups, it contains a few of the noteworthy backups I've made since rooting. Just make sure you don't rename them on the PC or ROM Manager/Clockwork will come up with an MD5 mismatch and won't restore.

I'm using CM 7.1 and my radio is 12.54.60.52U_26.09.04.11_M2 and I've been using CM 7.1 with no issues. The bit in bold is the important bit, that or anything above should be fine. If you look in Settings -> About Phone -> Baseband Version, what's your current radio?

There's a guide to flashing the radio here: [GUIDE] How to Flash a Radio.IMG Win/Mac - xda-developers (it contains MAC instructions too) and a list of current radios here: [RADIO][LATEST: 26.13.04.19] The HTC Desire HD Radio Thread - xda-developers

Use the radio dated 28th April 2011 and it should be fine. Just make sure check the MD5 checksum of the radio.img file once downloaded as if it's corrupt, you could damage the phone beyond repair!

Downgrading radios is temperamental so if you flash, the above, then want to switch to ARHD, flashing the newer radio for that won't be a problem. I don't think having the recommended radio for ARHD using CM7 will be much of an issue either tbh.

The Radio is the part of the phone which handles all outside communications, phone calls, Wireless, Bluetooth, 3G etc. ROMs won't contain a radio as they can't be flashed in recovery (clockwork/AMON Ra/4EXT Recovery), only in fastboot.

The radio is one of the first things to spring to life after your phone is switched on so a bad radio flash can brick your handset. That's why it's important to be very careful and follow the instructions thoroughly. That being said, it's pretty easy to do.

The radio isn't overly important on AOSP ROMs (Cyanogen, MIUI etc) as a lot of them don't recommend one (although the CM 7.1 release candidate does). I don't think MIUI recommends one, but I'm not overly au faix with the requirements for MIUI.

Sense based ROMS (LeeDroid, ARHD etc) recommend a radio as they contain what's called a RIL (Radio Interface Layer) which controls how the software talks to the handset. If you're not using the recommended radio for the ROM, you can choose the RIL which matches it and flash the RIL zip via recovery.

A mismatch can cause problems with signal which will impact battery life as the phone sends more power to the radio to get a better signal.

My current radio is 12.56.60.25P_26.10.04.03M

I'm getting a fair amount of use out of the battery since flashing CM, and I am quite a heavy user so it's nice that I don't have to charge it twice or more times a day. But if changing the radio can make the battery last a bit longer I would be interested to do it.

The radio you're using is newer than the one they recommend so it should be fine. I can't comment on how the newer radios perform, but the one I use does me fine, so you can try that if you want? If you're happy with the radio at the moment, you might as well just stick with it. As I mentioned above, flashing a radio can be risky (but easy) so there's no point in risking things for nothing.

If you want to get a bit more out of the battery, you could try one of LorDmods kernels? That greatly improved things for me.

I'd also recommend upgrading to 7.1 over 7.0.3. :)

ElPresidente, So you only need to flash a new radio if the current is not functioning properly with a new rom? If MIUI rom doesn't recommend a Radio, does that mean the one you've got, if coming from stock (HTC sense), will work fine?

I don't see why not, if they don't recommend one, any will do.

What's your current radio? Settings -> About Phone -> Baseband Version?

Updated to 7.1.0, battery life doing well so far :)

The only problem is that if I connect my phone to my computer, it starts charging and doesn't recognise that it is plugged into a computer. Nothing shows up in the notification bar and nothing appears on my computer either, which is a bit weird. USB debugging is turned on but doesn't show up either.

Not sure if I've understood correctly, but if you pull your notification bar down, it should say USB connected... if you touch that, you should get the option to turn on USB storage.

EDIT - just re-read... hadn't got that it shows nothing in your notification bar!

Run Fix Permissions from within ROM Manager. Then Head into Settings -> Applications -> Development and check to see if USB Debugging is enabled.

Did it mount before? With the stock HTC firmware?

Now you're on 7.1, you might want to give LorDmod's kernel a shot? That, along with his undervolt scripts, did wonders for my battery. It could just be a perception thing, but I found my handset a lot slicker with his kernel too. You need to do a bit of jiggery pokery to get his latest (7.3 CFS) to work with CM7.1 though, so if you decide to go for it, let me know and I'll give you the zip you need to flash in CWM.

Haven't got my phone with me at the moment - it's sent back for repair (proximity sensor is screwed). So I'm stuck with a Nokia E52 :-(

Will look into it when it's back :)

No probs, just post when you get it back. :)

Hi guys I've been trying this tool for the last couple of hours with no luck. Keep getting the message
'Phone not plugged in
OR
Driver not installed
OR
USB debugging not enabled'.

Thing is, my computer (vista) recognises phone as plugged in, I installed the drivers out of the .zip, its connected in charge only mode and USB debugging is enable.

I'm thinking I'm missing something really obvious but just can't work out what it is? Anyone experienced this or know what I'm missing?

It didn't fix it unfortunately. It had been working fine even after flashing CM 7.0.3, until about 2 days ago when I plugged it into my computer and it just charged, nothing else. I have tried rebooting a few times, and I thought that flashing to 7.1.0 might fix it but it hasn't.

EDIT: I have noticed that in Settings -> About Phone -> Status, that when the problem arose, the Battery Status was showing as 'Charging (AC)' whereas now it is showing as 'Charging (USB)' but I still cannot connect it with the computer

Yeah I would be happy to give it a go. Would you be able to write a short how-to on here so I can try it out?

Did you uninstall HTC Sync? You need specific drivers for your PC (not sure about the Mac) to recognise the handset and they're included with HTC Sync. Also a silly question, but is there an SD Card in there/mounted?

LorDmod's Kernel is here: [KERNEL][29SEP]LorDModUE V7.3|BFSv404|ALL AOSP ROMS|2.6.35.14+|BLACKICE EDITION - xda-developers

To get it to work properly with the 7.1 stable release, you need to download the MIUI version and the Normal CFS version. Extract the libsqlite.so file from the normal kernel then add it to the System/Lib directory of the MIUI kernel. If that sounds daunting, I can upload mine for you. Alternatively, you can just flash 7.2.

If you look at the 2nd post in the thread, that contains the Undervolt app and scripts. There are instructions on how to use that in the zip file. With undervolting, start off low, then work your way up. Max I can get is -50mV. The Stable Pinky works 99% of the time, but my phone will lock up requiring a battery pull at random intervals. Your handset might be different though.

As far as I know, I haven't uninstalled HTC Sync, and it's never been a problem on my Mac; when I plugged it in it would just show up as an external drive and I could go from there.

The SD card is definitely in there and mounted :)

Ha, that's a bit over my head I think. how come the MIUI version is needed and not the Cyanogenmod one?

Very strange! Does it do the same thing with another cable?

The reason he gave was this:

LorD ClockaN said:
thats it.. it's because of the new libausio files and me removing aic3254 powerdown sequence, because it's not needed anymore... but it is for CM stable

In laymans terms (I think!), they changed the way they did something in the CM Nightlies, but not in the stable release and his 7.3 kernel is supposed to work with the nightlies, not the stable.

Like I say, I can upload the modified version if you want, or the previous. The undervolting is really easy too, you flash the zip in clockwork, then it's controlled via an app or the terminal emulator.

Yeah, i've just tried another cable and it's doing the same thing. Do you know if there is any way I can put HTC Sync on my phone? (again, i'm pretty sure it's still on there, but it's possible it's disappeared somehow.)

Yeah if you can upload it that would be great :) Is it quite simple to flash?

I can attach both files, but if you can't connect the phone to the PC, you'll need to download them via the phone. Place on the root of your SD Card. Use ROM Manager to reboot into recovery, Once in CWM, head to backup and restore and backup your current ROM. Once completed, select install zip from SD Card, choose zip, then select the lordmodUEv7.3-CFS-MIUI zip file. Let that do its thing, then head back to the main menu in clockwork and reboot. The USB Controller is looked after by the kernel (I think) so this may sort your USB issues too.

Once rebooted, use ROM Manager to reboot into clockwork, highlight install zip from SD Card, select the LordModUVv4 zip file, let it do what it needs to do and once completed, reboot.

Open your app drawer and you'll see an app called LordModUV. Open that and select -25mV to start with. Use your phone a bit, try to hammer it, benchmarks, gaming etc and if you're stable with -25mV (your phone doesn't lock, requiring a battery pull) after an hour or so, then try the -50mV. Again, if you're stable, try the Stable Pinky UV.

As I mentioned, I thought I was fine with the Stable Pinky, I lasted about a few hours before it locked. I reverted back to -50mV and I've been fine since. I've tried SP a few times since and it locks after a few hours, but for how I use the phone, 50mV is fine. :)

If you get to the point where your phone won't boot with the undervolting on (as I did when I went with Ultra Undervolting straight away ), pull the battery, then boot into clockwork by holding volume down & the power button. From the booloader select recovery and it will take you into clockwork again. From there, select install zip from SD Card, then navigate to restuv, select the reset uv script and, reboot and you should be back to normal.

To be honest, if the Undervolting stuff sounds complicated, you'll be just as happy using the default kernel settings.

BTW, you'll need to use the volume keys to move the cursor in CWM and the power button selects.
