Help Smart Method to Import 2gSD to Larger SD?

Have rooted my Opt. V (have not otherwise changed the ROM). The provided 2gb MicroSD card is nearing its capacity and I want to use a larger card. Question is how best to move everything on the 2gb card to the new larger card? Computer I use is PC.

You will need to download the LG USB drivers which can be found here http://www.lg-phones.org/wp-content/uploads/LG-Optimus-V.zip . It will take a little while to install the drivers,don't be impatient. While waiting for the drivers to install go to your phone and press menu/settings/applications/development and check USB debugging box.
Once the drivers have finished install plug your phone into Your PC using the supplied USB cable.

An Icon should appear in your taskbar on PC (a USB cable end and a Check mark). If you don't see this Icon disconnect and reconnect phone. If still no Icon go back to Application/development and uncheck,then check the USB debugging box as fast as you can.

If everything is good and the phone is recognized by your PC, then on the first plug in of your phone to your PC you will see a Driver Icon with a thing moving around in circles. Wait until it says your drivers are installed and ready.
In your pulldown tray you will see a USB connected-select to copy files to/from your computer. Select this. An Android with a USB cable end for a hand will appear. Select the "Turn on USB storage" box. The Android will turn yellow and a turn off USB storage" box will appear and a new window with the contents of your uSD card will appear on your PC.
Transfer the contents to a new folder. When done select the "Turn off USB storage"box and click on the previously disscused Icon in your PC's task bar. Then disconnect your phone from your PC.
Unmount and pull 2g uSD card. Put new uSd card into phone and mount Wait a couple of minutes then Turn phone off. Turn phone on and after everything comes back to life(minus the apps that you don't have on the uSD card) then plug phone into PC and do the USB connect. Transfer files. Turn off storage. Click on Icon on PC. Reboot phone. Done.

You could just put 2G uSD card into PC,transfer data,then put new uSD card into PC and put all data on it,but, the above listed method will ensure that your phone recognizes the new uSD card and the data that was transferred.

Download Partition Magic Minitool. Best Free Partition Manager Freeware for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP 32 bit & 64 bit. MiniTool Free Partition Manager Software Home Edition.

You will need at least 1 uSD to SD or USB adapter. I used two. There is an option to copy partition, source 2gb destination new uSD. Once copied resize it to take up all the free space on the card.

I feel like those methods are overly complicated. lol

I just used a card reader and copied all the files to my PC, and then back onto my new 16GB micro sd (making sure it was formatted correctly, of course) and it worked fine.

This will work fine if you have hidden files and folders shown. Otherwise it will not.

OK, I'm getting ready to do this with minitool as suggested, but I need a little more information. I also planned on creating a second partition as well. If I use minitool to copy the files over, will it automatically format everything correctly? I'm guessing that I would not make the partion fill the card as stated, since I want a second partition, correct? Also, the whole 'if you have hidden files shown this will work, if not, it won't' thing....can u explain what you meant by that? Hidden files need to be shown on the pc? How? I'm using my mom's laptop for the switchover, no Internet so downloading drivers and whatnot would be problematic.

Edit: Also, it is recommened to make a Fat 32 partition, but ive read multiple places that some ROMS dont support it, and I should make it an ext 2 instead. Can I do that with Minitool? I just installed it and honestly, I dont even have a clue how to make a partition with it, let alone anything else mentioned. Im thinking I should move the apps and create a partition in 2 separate steps instead of trying to do both things at once, but, would I make the partition first, or move my info onto the new card first? do i need to put the new,blank SD card into the phone and click Format to have the phone format the card? if yes, before or after I make the partition?

I think I maybe making this more difficult than it need be, but eveytime I have it in my head that OK I can do this, lets go...I think of some other wrinkle and get confused all over again.

EDIT: Ok, i moved all my stuff from my 2gb card onto the computer. good
Attempted to use minitool to make a 4.9gb partition, leaving 10 free (dont know why my card is 14.9gb instead of the advertized 16 *shrug) Decided to go with ext2 partition instead of FAT32, since it seems custom roms like ext2 better, and thats a big reason i wanted a bigger card, was to try out new roms. Evertime I click the big checkmark to finish the process, I get "error 16 Disk I/O error". I have absolutly no idea what that means.
SO, I think im just going to make make my partition thru recovery, then put it in the computer and paste over all my data into the bigger section. *crosses fingers*

Thanks Andy Ive ready his tutorial about 5 times just since ive been home from work,lol. I think ill just cut and paste this over there....but im impatient...so i might just mess around with it anyways I dont have any data on the card yet to lose, so i figure i cant screw anything up 2 badly,right?

Right. Let me know how it goes,because I was thinking about doing the same thing. I learned that using the Links2SD method makes the apps more responsive,less laggy and less likely to have behavioral problems. My 8G is starting to get full with all the apps and bible based audio books and music that I've downloaded so a larger uSD card might be in the near future as well(if work holds up,getting close to the completion of this job and have been sitting at the house the last couple of days waiting on the other subcontractors to get done so we can go in and finish up).

OK, trying it now. Xionia recovery seems to only let you go up to a 4096mb partition,whereas i was looking at doing a 5028, but whatever, thats what i chose. Next it asked me to choose a swap size...I have no idea what that means, so I chose zero. (I suppose since I had no idea what it meant,I should have stopped and not done anything, but whatever) and now it says its done. Im gonna pop it in the computer and see what it looks like. If all is well, Ill move my data back onto it see how it acts.

What do you know about the darktremors app2sd thingy? anything? ive seen the name bandied about as an alternative to links2sd, but it seems more..complicated. then again, links2sd looks complicated too! seems like you have to relink everytime you flash a rom? not sure i like that

Format the card first, it should duplicate the format of the partition you're copying.

When you copy the partition it will make it the same size of the one you're copying.

The stock ROM reads FAT32 just fine and you can change the 2nd partition's format if you change ROMs.

Yes, Minitool will format Ext2 just fine.

You have to have the partition to move the apps.

Making a partition will format the card. You don't need to do it in the phone and I suggest doing it via minitool if at all possible.

That is an age old problem, it is because two different standards are used.

Unless your phone is already running a nonstock kernel it will not read the Ext2 partition.

This again won't work with the stock kernel. It can not read Ext2.

First things first. Take the new card and format it:
Select the card from the UI, click format and then change the file system to FAT32, then OK. Then click apply.

Once it is formatted select resize. Lower the Partition size until Unallocated Space After is around 2gigs or 2000megs. Click OK.

Select the new unallocated space and click create. You should get a notice that says, "The new created partition cannot be used in Windows. Because Windows could only recognize the first partition on a removable disk." Select yes you want to continue.

On the window that pops up it needs to read as follows:

Then click apply.

Once this is done you can drag all of the files from the first card to the new card's larger partition.

What I ended up doing was putting the card in the phone to format, then made the partition in xionia recovery. Then I put it in the computer and changed the ext3 that was made by the recovery to an ext2, as I am not on the stock kernel or rom, nor do I plan to be. Also, I can't change back and forth between fat & ext2 because I don't have a computer-I'm borrowing my moms laptop for tonight to do this and that's it.
Once that was done, I copied my files from the 1st sdcard onto the computer, then copied them to the new card. Well, not so much copied as am still copying...apparently it takes over an hour to transfer 1.16gb of stuff.

Update: Apparently Harmonia doesnt play well with ext2 either. No huge deal tho, my plan now that I have a bigger card is to update to Harmonia 1.6.1c, then change my recovery so that I can flash BACKside ROM. We shall see if that works with ext2. Or maybe ill just change to FAT32 and see if that works with BACKside....this is all taking way to long as it is, lol. Onward!
