what is your hboot? if you are on gingerbread you need to turn off fastboot. go to settings/app/uncheck fastboot. power off then press and hold power+vol down. this will get you to the hboot(bootloader). at the top it will say what your hboot is.

if your hboot 2.10 or less then use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html

if your hboot is 2.15 or 2.16 then use this guide:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

please read them carefully before proceeding. and ask any questions if needed.

It's easier to explain it like this.
If you have a junk drawer with a bunch of crap in it before you open it, there's a chance it'll get stuck. If the drawer is cleaned out it opens up smoothly.
See if you don't factory reset, you run the risk of "crap" interfering with your root. Also once you root and start flashing roms, you'll realize factory resetting isn't a big deal at all.
You can use My Backup to save everything you have now.
Believe me you won't be sorry if you root your phone. We're here to help you, you won't be alone. Just post up your questions. :D

As a general rule, you dont want to use things like youtube for information on rooting. Technology changes fast and sadly a lot of people come here after using information they found somewhere on the web that wasnt up to date.

Follow the instructions in the rooting for dummies gingerbread edition sticky in this forum. It is kept up to date with the latest information.
