Root EVO restarting on it's own!

Hi everyone. My EVO is rooted with Unrevoked and it's great. However recently I've had problems with my EVO restarting on it's own. It usually happens when I'm using the Google Navigation app, and that's pretty incovenient since I'm using it while I'm on the road! A couple times I've been put into a boot loop where I've had to pull the battery.

I'm currently running Mik 2.55. I was thinking I was using too much RAM so I flashed CM7 and used Google Navigation before I even put a ton of apps on there, however it happened again. This has even happened a few times while I'm playing Super Stickman Golf.

I've wiped the caches and that only helps temporarilly. I love my rooted EVO...but now my wife makes fun of me when my phone restarts (she has an unrooted EVO). :( More importantly, I need to be able to rely on the Navigation app since sometimes I have to drive for my work.

Any help would be appreciated.

i have had this issue like 4-5months ago. it happened where it would randomly once in a while, but then it got gradually worse and worse. i noticed that when i would get reboots that my phone would get really hot. it happened with gps, a few games, and pandora. i tried everything that i could think of but nothing i did worked. i tried a few roms and wiped everything. the only thing left for me was to unroot my phone and see if that helped. of course that did not work so i had to take it in. i showed them the reboot and they gave me a refurbished one.

I don't believe that CM7 is a great indicator of whether or not GPS is working properly unless you've done all the necessary fixes for CM7.

Have you tried a different rom because I had a similar issue with the 8/5 Synergy GodMode rom where I used Nav and the phone would reboot. Also, the phone just wouldn't stay at a stable temperature when I used GPS.

On CM7 I did flash the GPS fix, but was there another tweak needed?
I have tried this on different ROMS. In fact, it originally started happening with Synergy RC2.

@ocnbrze, hopefully that is not the only solution, but I'll consider it if nothing else works. I also considered unrooting, doing the Gingerbread update and then using the new method to root. Although it sounds like that might not help.

If you did ##GPSCLRX##( not sure if that's what it's called but..) that's the one I'm talking about.

Maybe it has something to do with Synergy, doubt it but it could be a possibility. Don't believe unrooting and then rerooting will help in this. Also, when you're on the road do you have the phone plugged in when using GPS? Are you using a custom kernel and overclocked and what governor are you using? If you are using a custom kernel, have you tried using the stock htc kernel and see if the issue still happens?

Hi Andygu3,
With Mik2.55 I did not add any Kernals, although I think there was one included with that ROM. With CM7 I had flashed the newest version of Tiamat (about a week or so ago).
I have not overclocked, and I'm not even sure what a governor is (in regards to the phone). Also, I flashed back to stock (although that Nandroid is loaded with apps) and my phone restarted again...

The kernel included with 2.55 is the stock htc kernel. Have you tried a different kernel then? maybe your phone doesn't like the stock kernel:p

I doubt that's it since it never used to happen. Maybe it has to do with an app that I use. I use Advanced Task Killer...could that cause a problem?

you really do not need to use a task killer with the android os. android does a pretty good job at monitoring its own resources. i think that it is more counter productive and can worsen your battery life. but i doubt that is the reason why you are getting the random reboots.

one thing you can try is to use a ruu. this will keep you rooted but you will have a stock rom and more importantly a stock recovery. see if you can get it to reboot afterwards. if you do not get it after that then all you need to do is install a custom recovery via PC36IMG file in hboot.

here is the ruu:Free File Hosting, Online Storage &amp File Upload with FileServe
1. download it and rename it by deleting everything but the PC36IMG part. do not add an extra zip as windows hides extensions
2.move onto the root of the card. do nto place it in any folder.
3.power off then press and hold power+vol down.
4.select yes to update
5.reboot

now give try and see if you can get it to reboot. if it does then you might have a hardware issue. if not then you can go to the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html to get a custom recovery back onto your phone. instructions can be found in the switching recoveries section.
