Huge fan of my Galaxy S2, best phone iv ever used but my god, this Icloud gig is epic, I mean I use apple products, mac and Ipad, and just the fact that everything I do gets uploaded and downloaded automaticly to all my devices is just epic and its what making me consider switching, just having everything I need everywhere without worrying about manually doing it myself, such as with my S2.
I dunno guys, apple are pulling all the right strings with this Icloud! Quick, stop me from changing my mind about apple!
I'm sorry but I can't share the sentiment.
iCloud is for me just another venue for Apple to make more money. And what a waste of bandwidth. You make a photo or upload photo to your phone, immediately your ipad and your imac, macbook pro etc... get updated.
Yes, great, if you in WIFI zone, but most countries are still not so strong on free public WIFI.
iCloud has limited space, which you can expend by paying annual fees.
Now, I have been using Synology for over a year. My own 8tb cloud, right in the middle on my living-room (not literally in the middle
), which I can expend at will. The model that I got is the DS211+, enough for my purpose. I have mine set up in Raid 1, so 1 HDD is used and the other bay just mirrors the first HDD. It sync with my PS3, Galaxy, house computers, office computers, ipads, and Samsung tablets. They do have dedicated apps on IOS and other devices, but you can also set it up as HTTP or HTTPS. What I like about the apps is the ability to save the files right on the IOS device and not going through itunes. Also via web, it has its own players ala itunes style,. so you could stream music from your storage device to just about any appliance, same goes for photos. Also if you have surveillance cams, you can use this NAS to do the recordings, I have apps on mobile devices for live streaming and such. Important to note is its upload speed capabilities for streaming. DS-211+ can stream at over 110mbps.
I can even log in to it remotely, and set up a torrent download from my phone, and it's on my harddrive by the time I get home. Just yesterday I was chilling with a friend, he told me about some cool American TV show. I logged in to my house "iCloud", went for search, found the torrent. On my 50mbps fiber optic line, it takes 4min to download 1gb. So I had the whole 6 seasons of the show ready in under an hour (slow seeding).
Not to mention the way you can expend it and customize it. Far far more superior to the very limited icloud, which is nothing but media storage and sync.
And the key issue for me.
When I buy mp3 on Amazon, I actually own the file, and can move it to any place I want, whether it's another player like in my car or phone.
What iCloud does, is the attempt to answer to the most common complain, that people who purchase media online, don't actually own it. Now, you get something online, you have it automatically on all devices, but still you can't take it out without 3rd party tools, you just get multiple copies of it on every apple you own.
And beside Synology, there are many other solutions, even more complex and comprehensive, unlike cloud, my data is right in my house, not on some remote server. So if my internet is down, I wire it up and get what I want, or stream it using house network to my TV or desktops. With iCloud, the moment you out of coverage, you out of service.
Such service like iCloud, would be the last reason for me to change entire device and usage experience just for that
I have my Galaxy plugged to so many things, iphone could only dream of doing.
Anyway, my preferences do not apply to others. So if you feel this way, by all means
Hope you will enjoy to service.
best regards
Sebastian
