Getting a new phone - What to do? Opinions please.

Hey guys, I am in the market for a new phone... I was gonna pick up a Galaxy SII but I have decided to wait for the Nexus Prime as it's going to better and run stock Ice Cream Sandwich. But I then started thinking that by the start of next year we will be seeing a Galaxy SIII at either CES of Mobile World Congress and it will be avaliable at around May if not earlier. There are already a few leaks and opinions on what the galaxy SIII will be like and it will be even better than the Nexus Prime.

So my dilema is, Should I get a Nexus Prime when its out (and that will be the best smartphone for around 6 months) or should I wait that time, run my current phone on SIM only and then get one of the new superphones next year like the Galaxy SIII or something else if HTC come out with something amazing? Then if I do that it will be around 6 months till the 2012 nexus, so whatever I do the phone I get will be the best for 6 months... Im just not sure if I want the Nexus or an actual Samsung branded phone like the SIII.

Thing is the Samsungs and HTCs that are released at that start of the years such as the Galaxy SII and HTC Desire (which is what I have now) always seem to be better and more popular than the Nexus phones and they win awards for phone of the year like the Desire did last year and Galaxy SII did this year, and the Nexus devices never do... However they do have a nice stock build of Android, quick updates and fast software.

Sorry that was a lot to take in but what are your thoughts and what do you think I should do?

Any input is welcome, my brain is fried with all this thinking lol.

THANKS IN ADVANCE! :):rolleyes::D

dont try to keep up with technology, u wont go 3 months without the release of a phone that u wish u had waited for :D if ur buying now, the SGS2 is a great phone, as Twinn said, its definitely the best phone currently on the market.

however, if ur willing to wait, the nexus prime looks pretty solid too, as does the htc amaze.. i'd wait on the SGS3 too, however i saw some specs saying its gonna have a 4.6" screen? im afraid thats just too big for me, 4.3" is seriously the limit, and im a big guy with big hands.. lol

thanks guys, lol i dont mind 4.6" - but what i am asking is... why would u recomend i get the galaxy s2 now then get the galaxy s3... why dont i just get the nexus prime (as thats coming very soon and will also be better than sgs2) then get the galaxy s3

its up to u, really.. posting over here at the SGS2 forum, ur gonna get a lot of recommendations to get this phone over anything else, coz truly, it doesnt let u down...i guess why u should get the SGS2 right now over the prime is coz its been tried n tested for almost 6 months now.. unlike the prime, a lot is known about the SGS2, and there's great support here as wel as on xda.. seriously, i was over at the desire S forum for a friend, and its like.. flat, compared to this :D

If you're considering waiting six months for an SGSIII then you may as well give up making any decisions now as by then there will be rumours of something even better. That's how this industry goes.

The GSII is pretty mature, has a lively dev community and available now. The Prime/Nexus may be available by year-end but nothing certain will be known until the formal announcement. MWC is mid-Feb, so anything announced then won't hit market until late Spring.

By the time you've waited for the Galaxy S3, the Google Nexus Prime Time or whatever the next Nexus is called will be just around the corner, as will the iPhone 6 and the Motorola R2D2 or whatever all of the new phones are called (not that we get Motorolas in the UK).. there's no point in waiting for technology unless it's literally RIGHT around the corner, otherwise you'll always be waiting..

It's like now, if the Galaxy S2 does everything you want then get it. If you just want the latest and greatest phone, wait for the Nexus Prime as it's probably going to be released in time for Christmas..

Yeah i think ill get the 2s when i can upgrade (in 29 days :D) then get the s3 in 6 months if its worth it... But if in 29 days when I upgrade the Nexus prime is here ill consider that instead of a S2. maybe lol... Anyhow I agree i shouldn't wait 6 months for a phone lol

haha, my thoughts exactly :D i dont usually ever try to keep up with new tech coz its just impossible these days. i bought the SGS2 in may, as it looked to be a great phone, and at least spec-wise its been able to remain on top for 5 months, thats impressive :D as long as it does wat u want, and ur happy with it, it should be good.. im not even thinking of upgrading at the moment

lol thats the thing, my htc desire does everything i want and its fast i just want a new phone after having the desire for ages, plus im due an upgrade very soon. also my desires battery life is very bad now so i need something fresh :)

If the Desire is good enough for you and you "just want a new phone" you really might as well wait for Prime.

Otherwise you might decide that the Galaxy S2 is good enough for you and you just want a new phone again when the Prime comes out! :p At least the Prime will be top dog for longer if you got that, so you're less likely to get bored with it.

yeah true lol, i am someone that loves the newest best thing always but i realised a few years ago i waste far too much money buying all the new things even tho they are not massively better so i may just wait and get the prime lol, its gonna be so good anyway :D

Same here.

When I got the Desire it was absolutely amazing, really really fast, tons of features (first Android phone), etc.. then after a while I got bored and rooted it, which made it a lot faster, gave me more space etc.

I thought the Desire was plenty fast enough for me until I got the SGS2.. which is just something else. :p

Yeah Desire was my first Android too :D - It was amazing when it was first out, very popular, won T3 phone of the year.. That was last year. this year its EXACTLY the same, Just with the SGS2. And I can imagin its like 3 or 4 times faster than the desire, and bigger and nicer, thats why i wanted one finally but as the nexus is just around the corner and will be better i am eyeing that up lol :)

Yeah im fully aware that the SGS2 is the best you can get at the moment... I was going to get it when it was first out but I hadnt had my HTC long so i decided to wait. but now i can upgrade i am thinking:

The SGS2 is the best now, but in just 1 month the Nexus Prime will be here and it will be even better, so I thought I should get the nexus, however it may not be as good as the SGS2 in real world performance (but probably will) and may not be as popular (but again probably will). But then there is also this rumoured SGS3 which will be the best phone of next year most likely so i am now thinking, should I just get the SGS2 now (which will be cheaper than the nexus anyway) then in 6 months sell it and buy a SGS3? Or should I just get the nexus now and keep that, I do like to have all the latest stuff to a certain extent but i think ill wait for the nexus. I really dont want to over analyse my decision because then i will have no idea what i want out of a phone, i will just be getting what everyone says i should and whats newer. just a really hard choice lol! :)

Better in some ways maybe but not all. There will be no option for expandable storage for example, and that lovely hi-res display may not play nice with all existing apps. ;)

then there is also this rumoured SGS3 which will be the best phone of next year most likely

You think? I'd wait until we see how HTC and the other big players counter such a spec before jumping to hasty conclusions? ;)

You are over-thinking.... if you need a replacement now then it's either the GS2 or the Prime/Nexus by your own admission. If you can afford to wait until (probably) Q2 2012 then do so. I'll guarantee that by then the decision won't be any easier as there'll be a slew of new hardware to drool over. :)

yeah, u guys are definitely overthinking :D just get wats available now thats really good.. and dont think about wat future releases will make u regret ur current choice. as slug said, there's always gonna be newer "better" stuff coming out.. and as i said before, its impossible to keep up :D however, seeing that the new nexus (galaxy nexus?) will be out next week, u might as well check that out before making a decision.. but dont go overboard thinking of phones that are gonna be released next year! :p
