Noob's Guide to 'All Things Root' 0.3

You just received your Samsung Galaxy Prevail, but you noticed that it doesn't have very much memory (ram or rom) and responds a bit slow, now what? It's time to fix your phone so that it works properly and actually does the things you want it to do.

0. [RECOVER FACTORY] However you don't have to worry about making changes to your phone since at any point if you brick your phone or accidentally delete something you wanted to keep, you can always Hail Odin, and restore everything back to factory defaults thanks to Samsung (and of course interdpth, koush, and others that contributed) then start over again if you wish. See Link here:

link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...turn-phone-stock-factory-updated-11-09-a.html

here' a video tutorial, thanks to murderousone:
video link Samsung Galaxy Prevail ODIN Recovery To Stock ED13 Or EE14 Rooted & Unrooted (HD) - YouTube

1. [TIPS] Make a backup of anything and everything you have so far. Even if it is just a plain old boring stock backup, you always want to make backups of your stuff whenever possible.

2. [ROOT] Root your phone to give yourself full control of your device. You can do this with one click thanks to interdpth and Shabbypenguin. See Link to the new and improved version here:

link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...oot-samsung-prevail-replenish-shabbyfied.html

3. [RECOVERY MOD] Install ClockWorkMod so that you can backup/restore/flash roms/etc.. You can Install CWM. With special thanks to koush and to udK for compiling, (and others for tweaking, testing, porting, etc..) See Link here:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...kmod-update-10-28-new-version-v5-0-2-6-a.html

4a. [SYSTEM MODS] (or "roms") Now that you have a fully customizable phone, you probably will want to customize it. The best way to begin this process is to pick a Mod and flash it to your phone. There are only a couple of choices at the moment and they are both in testing phase, so you may need to play around with different ones, before you choose which one you want to use on your phone.

The first choice is ShabbyMod, thanks to Shabbypenguin, for the latest version and installation instructions, See Link to thread here:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/350148-rom-acs-shabbymod-0-9-a.html

Another choice is A2SD/EXT4 TestMod, thanks to murderousone, for the latest version and installation instructions, See Link to thread here:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...nes-a2sd-ext4-testmod-cwm-advanced-users.html

Another choice is CTMod, thanks to Bloodawn, See Link to thread here:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/432614-rom-ctmod.html

another choice is 187MoD-GB, thanks to The~Skater~187, See Link to thread here:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/443532-rom-187mod-gb.html

another is cyanogenmod here:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...-1-0-prevail-unofficial-beta-v2d-11-06-a.html

4b. [KERNELS] Instead of flashing a new system mod every time a minor tweak is applied you might prefer to just flash a new kernel, again there are a couple of choices:

thanks to Shabbypenguin for kernel RC1:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/398674-acs-shabbykernel-rc1.html

thanks to Koumajutsu for KoumaKernel:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/429740-koumakernel-0-1-beta.html

5. [PERFORMANCE MODS] (or scripts) Once you've picked a system mod (or rom) to use and have everything properly formatted you may want to try and boost your performance a bit further by installings some additional Mods.

thanks to inigomontoyasr for Darktremor A2SD:

6. [THEMES] Finally once your system is up and running you may prefer to tweak your themes 'n such by testing out the local flavors.

7. [APPS] This part definitely gets into personal taste, so take these suggestions with a grain of salt.
Most people quickly realize that as always their device initially includes some unwanted bloatware, unfortunately it isn't always clear which apps should or can be deleted and which ones are even worth keeping. There have been a few attempts to narrow down a decent list of which apps should go and which ones should stay, see Links to threads here:

thanks to blue2107 for safe to remove apps list:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...349897-uninstallable-preloaded-apps-list.html

thanks to Viet1982 for recommended apps list:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...0-essential-noteworthy-apps-list-prevail.html

but ultimately you'll have to figure out for yourself which ones you add or delete. having said that, here are a few recommendations for apps that you might like, need or enjoy:

Must Haves:
Titanium Backup, ES File Explorer, TeleNav GPS, Calculator,

lnformational Apps:
Elixir, Quadrant Standard, SD Tools, Speed Test, Wifi Analyzer,

System Apps:
Quick Boot, Fast Reboot, Wireless Tether, EasyTether, GO Launcher, Widgetsoid, AppBrain,

Performance Apps:
SD-Booster, JuiceDefender, SetCPU, AutoKiller Memory Opt, AdFree, link2sd (if not using A2SD)

Media Apps:
MIUI Music, doubleTwist,

Useful Apps:
Catch, Dolphin Browser (or Opera), Sense Analog Clock/Analog Small Clock, Timeriffic,

8. [TIPS]
a. backup and save all the time
b. before using titanium backup to convert and move apps, change preferences -> Troubleshooting settings -> App processing mode -> AUTO, Indirect (If you have problems)
c. set SD-Booster to 2048 KB
d. gingerbread/cyanogen mod is coming to prevail stay tuned
e. why pay for free stuff? everytime you hear someone say you need root explorer just use ES File Explorer (settings -> root settings -> Root Explorer [v] Mount File System [v] AND set Home Directory to :/ )
f. Darktremor A2SD Vs. Link2SD, i'm still researching this one, i'll post updates
g. JuiceDefender and/or SetCPU, still researching
h. tip your waiters, or in this case the people who put in time and effort to make your phone better, feel free to donate to the ones who make this stuff possible.
i. wireless tether tip, thanks to Necrotoxin, http://androidforums.com/galaxy-pre...2451-wireless-tether-infrastructure-mode.html
j. when you switch themes, before installing the zip in CWM you should do a dalvik cache wipe then a cache partition wipe then flash the theme then reboot the system and wait a minute or two, and if it doesn't bootloop then you get to keep your stuff, otherwise if you have to do a restore or factory wipe then you lose your stuff, if you wait for 5+ minutes and you can hear the phone vibrating multiple times, then it is probably looping, at which point you'll have to hold power button down + vol up to get back to the recovery menu (and pick another theme)
k. do not attempt to use rom manager to modify your phone, it doesn't like the prevail
l. some commentary on which ext version is best here http://androidforums.com/ally-all-things-root/257824-ext2-vs-ext3-vs-ext4-what-better-why.html and here http://androidforums.com/hero-all-things-root/226167-ext2-ext3-ext4.html
m. OpenVpn and Anyconnect stuff thanks to jtaylor781 here http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/398956-openvpn-anyconnect.html#post3218986

9. [CUSTOM STUFF] just some random misc. theming stuff

+boot animations [TIP] boot animations can be installed (via ES file explorer *see tip e, etc..) by pasting your bootanimation.zip to /system/media, overwriting it so you should make a copy of the original (or rename it)

thanks to QuietStorm1785 for stickman action:
link http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-prevail/386640-my-custom-boot-animations.html

thanks to zexnu for resident evil:
link http://androidforums.com/galaxy-prevail-all-things-root/421164-resident-evil-boot-animation.html

also certain themes found in this guide, contain custom boot ani's

I wouldn't call TeleNav GPS a "Must Have"
Google Nav works great, integrates with your contact list pretty well, and it's 100% free

once you've heard the voice difference you'll never go back

btw TeleNav is also 100% free (comes preinstalled)

to be honest i keep both, because google nav is a bit more fluid and reliable, now if we can just figure out how to transfer the voice from telenav to google we're golden :)

Oh really? I didn't even bother to try it since it also came preinstalled on my previous phone, the Sanyo Juno, and always asked me to sign up for a $10/month service plan every time I launched it by accident. It made me respond, "10 bucks a month for GPS?! I'll just keep using my Garmin with 3 year old maps, thanks"

YARLY

i use it almost twice a day, and have used it for more than 3 months and have not paid one single penny and it NEVER asks me to sign up or in for any kind of service

if there was a fee, i'd totally agree with you there, but for free, i'm enjoying every pennies worth!

i made a point to keep it on the must haves so that we don't "accidently" lose it from our stock roms, like we did way back when

I rooted my new Prevail using one-click and then, using Titanium Backup, proceeded to (accidentally) delete a system component that (ironically enough) hadn't been backed up. This left me unable to access my phone's settings (kind of important), unable to add or change wallpaper, add widgets to my home screens, etc. This post got me back up and running. Thanks!

See Links here:

Can you tell me where to find this on Samsung's website, I would like to make sure I am downloading official Samsung software to my phone

Thanks

link for rooted w/ shabbymod and CWM: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

or if you prefer:

link for plain old unrooted stock rom: MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

Both of these links point to the same file, can you correct this within the next couple of hours so people dont get confused.

Also I dont beleive any of the Odin Images that
I
MADE
contain ShabbyMod except for the EXT4 test Rom that was for advanced users, but you should have not installed that ROM.

3. [RECOVERY MOD] Install ClockWorkMod so that you can backup/restore/flash roms/etc.. You can Install CWM. With special thanks to koush and to udK for compiling, See Link here:
link MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

TO INSTALL CWM
1. Download and unzip the zip file.
2. Download EE14 Fix stick.zip and copy to sdcard
3. Install the Samsung USB drivers (if you dont already have them)
4. From a powered off phone put phone in Download Mode by holding Vol down, Camera Button, and Power button until the Yellow Downloading message appears
5. Plug phone into USB port
6. Open Odin, you should see a yellow box with a com number
7. Select SPHM820.ops in the OPS box
8. Put a check in One Package
9. Select the tar file in the One Package box
10. Click Start
11. When Odin says reset and the phone reboots Hold Vol UP, and Power button until you are in CWM DO THIS QUICKLY BEFORE PHONE BOOTS, IF PHONE BOOTS UP ALL THE WAY START BACK AT STEP 4. you do not have to wait for Odin to say pass, that does not work
12. In CWM go into install zip from sdcard
13. select choose zip from sdcard
14. select stick.zip
15. select Yes - Install stick.zip
16. After it is done installing Press back button
17. Select Reboot System Now

Yes Koush and udK deserve special thanks, I agree with you on that one

I think it is also fare to give credit to the creator of the of the CWM port especially when you are linking to his files and using his instructions verbatim. I wonder who that is, can it possibly be

As a reminder, Android Forums has a set of site rules/guidelines posted in our Introductions forum. In this thread many of the basic "rules of the road" are documented.

http://androidforums.com/introductions/704-site-rules-guidelines.html

Below is an excerpt from the Site Rules thread:

General Conduct: Admittedly, I'm probably a little more anal about this topic than some. I have very little tolerance for uncalled for disrespect. With that said.. read on. Please treat other members with respect. These forums were put together for Android fans to come together and help each other, collaborate and discuss in a positive way – not bash on someone because you don't like their idea, or because they don't share the same views as you. We are big into the free speech idea here. So you're free to say what you think – but do it in a constructive, positive, 'add to the conversation' kinda way – not the condescending 'I don't like what you're saying so you suck and also, are a bitch' kinda way. We encourage mature debates – discourage childish arguments.

To those of you bickering we'd sure appreciate it if you took a step or two back and give the above paragraph a bit of thought before continuing the bickering. And if you choose to continue a moderator will likely step in and take further action.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support of the Android Forums!

good question.

odin can restore the factory rom which is made in the Samsung factory, that's why they call it a "factory" rom, the factory rom (which was created by Samsung comes preinstalled when you buy a galaxy prevail) however i am not sure where on Samsungs website they keep this information, perhaps you can contact Samsung's technical support?

your welcome
