Root Recommendation on good ROMS

Hi, I'm seriously considering rooting my HTC Desire (original), because I'm tired of the official but unstable HTC developer update for gingerbread.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good ROM to go for which meets these specs

* Gingerbread (latest if possible)
* HTC Sense 2.1
* Apps2sd+ so I can make use of my sd as a ext partition and get more internal storage

What's been people's experience using apps2sd+ and faking more internal memory. Did you find performance was hit, apps load slower. Must I use a special sd card class or am I fine with sd card that came with the device. It's 4 Gb but I don't store that much anyway.

Thanks

As you're not asking how you go about rooting, I assume you're ok with that part?

As for the Rom requirements, I'd say Teppic's gingerbread Rom (found on the xda board). I'm currently using it now and its smooth and very stable as its a streamlined Sense. Also has apps2sd+ support and I've found no impact on speed and never get any grumbles about having no space, so its just what I wanted. I have heard good things about LeeDroid but I haven't experimented with it... Yet!

As for the SD card, I don't see why the one you're suggesting would have any issues, but I've never used it. I bought a cheap 16gb from Amazon which I partitioned 1024 mb ext3 and works fine. I'd be tempted to buy a 4gb card crappy from an online store for a trial run though. Just in case then you have a back up.

I suggest you do a bit of reading around the roms as there are a few which match your requirements, but personally I think Teppic's ticks all the boxes for what your asking! Good luck!

I charge mine every night. After 15 or so hours of use I'm usually down to around 30%.

Most roms have made very little impact on this evn though I always under/overclock them. Biggest battery drain cause for me is getting 3g signal. I know for a fact if I'm on wi-fi at home all day the same 15 hours will see me with 65% or so battery left.

hi

i prefer the redux style roms at the mo -ive used redux2 which is nice and now dGB - which is based on redux 1.2 i think and very light.
my first rom i tried that i like was miui xj - very nice looking but a bit on the weighty side for my phone :) they are all good and very stable

agree with the comment above about battery life - am struggling with mine at the moment - roms and extras doesnt seem to improve it much - biggest drain is screen (obvious) and 3g data - so am looking at Tasker to see if i get reduce that

good luck

cheers
dan

....yes also noticed that wifi is better than 3g - think it sort of sleeps some of the time
also read somewhere that 3g has to re-aquire its connection a lot which hits the batt

I'm looking at doing something similar for my girlfriend's Desire as she is tired of getting the low memory warning and having next to no apps installed.

I just have no idea where to begin!!

I've never rooted a phone, and to be honest, she's never going to use any of the features that rooting brings. She just wants it to look like it does out of the box (i.e. Sense based) and give her more space to install apps.

Where do I begin to give her this?

Thanks

Root.
Look under the rooting guide in my sig. It's SUroot guide in there it tells you how to get more space without rooting, i think.

Hi Jon,

thanks for the response. Yes I've successfully rooted my device which was surprisingly easy doing this for the first time ever.

I've ordered a good priced class 10, 8gb card from play.com in prep for it. I rooted by using revolutionary.io and that allowed me to S-OFF and then rooted. So now I'm running a patched HBoot version 6.93.1002 and a radio version 5.17.05.23

My main questions now, which are the scary ones are these:

1. With the above patched revolutionary HBoot can I install any ROM or are there custom ROMS that will not work with revolutionary?

2. Most importantly, what exactly is the Radio? Is this information on how to make a call, send/recieve sms/mms? Do I need to backup the radio before installing new ROMS or does new ROM have radio installed?

3. Are some ROMs incompatible with certain radios

4. I've completed a full NAND backup. If something goes wrong with the custom ROM, is the NAND what I use to flash back my original ROM

Thanks

1) any Rom except versions specifically for cm7 hboot

2) radio is what controls the hardware that sends/receives signal

3) don't flash old radios as eclair radios not compatible with Froyo/gingerbread. Radio cannot be backed up. Don't really need to change radio unless you have serious signal issues

4) yes

Ahh cheers man

3) So I take it that flashing Radio is stored seperate from the ROM, so installing a new ROM tomorrow wont affect the radio unless I explicitly do so? In that case I'll leave well alone

Also according to this ROM which looks interesting:

[ROM] SUPERNOVA Xtreme Official GB SENSE 21/Sep| UNLIMITED INTERNAL MEMORY | STABLE - xda-developers

They say that they have had reports of class 10 SD cards not working with the desire. How true is this? Because I have one in shipping already. I know class 10 is overkill for what I need but I got it super cheap. I'm more worried that it won't play nice with the Desire or the ROM.

Cheers

I have a class 10, performs at class 6. This is due to physical limitation of the device however some claim their class 10 perform like a class 10. Those who use "sd tools" to check I don't trust though.

Here's what HTC said to me (i emailed them to win an argumeny)

I believe the reason for this is that the phone's compatibility lies at class 4 and maximum 6 for most SD cards and it is therefore i would highly advise you to use a lower class SD card for your media files.

By using a higher class SD card than the handset is intended for, not only will you may experience issues with your media files or the speed recorded but your SD card may become unusable in the long term and perhaps in other devices

3) dead right

In that case I might have to return my class 10 when it comes and order a 6. Damn it!!!

There was me trying to be super smart

Thanks
