I always wanted to make sure I had the best and most used apps for my Rooted 4G as I am sure others do too. I wanted to start a discussion on best or most needed/used apps for our phones. I actually wanted a better description of some apps I currently have and wondered how to use them. Please give a short detail as to what an app is good for or how to use it. Also, mention if there as an alternative app that serves the same purpose "ie: Go Launcher vs Launcher Pro."

-My Back Up Pro (MikG2.56) How do I use this and whats it good for? Is it different than Titanium Backup Pro?
-Whats the best theming app?? I see Launcher Pro and Go Launcher are very talked about.

What are some other "must need/most used" apps?

well i use tb. i have never found the need to use mybackup pro. it pretty does the same thing. there are a few features that can be handy. it can save contacts and messages and other stuff that tb cannot do. mybackup pro cannot, however, freeze or link apps to the market.

not sure what you mean by theming apps. if you are talking about launchers, they are not really for just rooted users. but i like go launcher myself.

for me the most important apps that i use for root users would tb and setcpu.

I'd say Roam Control is a popular app for rooted sprint users. The main reason I rooted was because when we went to our farm/deer lease, sprint signal was horrible, couldn't get data and searching for signal was killing my battery. Roam Control plus a corporate PRL is awesome. The PRLs sprint gives you don't allow 3G when roaming, the corporate PRLs do. I'm using the 11115 PRL, it pretty much allows me to switch back and forth from sprint to verizon at will.

just be careful with using verizon's prl you could get the boot from sprint. a member has already gotten the boot for doing just that.

As Ocn said Launchers do not require root. IMO Go Launcher is the best out there and is a must for any user. Go actually has a stream of programs they offer and all are themeable. Go Launcher EX, Go SMS, Go Keyboard are all in my arsenal I can't imagine Phoning without them.

Rooted:
Quick Boot - A soft reboot app. lets you reboot, go to recovery, bootmenu, or to just power off. Beats always pressing the power button.

RootExplore - A most Excellent File Manager that allows you to delete move copy system files folders and etc..

Titanium Backup - I use it not only for backups but to freeze apps to make sure there will be no negative impact if I want to remove them. The ability to defrost something can be a lot simpler than trying to reinstall it.

Not Rooted app I've been checking out is appaware. It gives you a list of apps in all area's and thier popularity.

thanx argedion i forgot about root explorer. great file manager that you can use to pull and copy system apks.

I use ES File explorer and this app is not needed for root users, very handy;) But if you are rooted, you can do most things with ES as you can with File Explorer, just use the rooted feature in ES.

TB- Never would root a phone without having this app

SetCPU(Paid) or Overclock widget(Free)- Overclock/underclock the processor, can be a battery saver

CacheCleanerNg- nice to be able to clear out unwanted cache files on a scheduled basis

Wimax Keys Checker- Always good to have this app even just to check for your wimax keys

Quick boot- One click shortcut to recovery or bootloader

Superuser- enough said:)

Wireless tether for root users- need we say more:D

Kernel manager (free/paid)- Nice to have a set list of kernels for your specific phone. But like rom manager, I would not use it to flash anything. Just use KM to download kernels

AdFree- Nice to have an ads free phone;)

Howdy Andygu3,

Root n00b here...I looked for AdsFree in the market and didn't see it. Mind sharing where you found that nugget?

Are you using version 2.07 for your wireless tether?

I used the wimax key checker and found my RSA key was indeed present. Very reassuring for my first root.

Thanks much.

TB is #1 for me as a rooted app. Don't think I'd ever flash a ROM without it. Makes restoring much easier. Get the paid version and you can backup/restore all your apps at once.

Roam Control is another must for me, its saved my signal quite a few times.

Terminal Emulator

Super Manager, same as Root Explorer or ES file manager, with a few other utilities built in

SetCPU of course

AdFree, though i never knew it came with mik ROMs. I always restored mine with titanium.

Wireless Tether used to be a must for me, but I find myself just using the built-in Sprint utility more now.

I still use and love LauncherPro. May give Go Launcher a try since others recommend it, but im kinda picky on launchers. I hated ADW launcher or whatever, which was the next most popular back in the day. No root needed for launchers tho.

You should know that MyBackup Pro now CAN FREEZE and LINK TO MARKET applications, not only that, but it can do it with a multi-select and 0-click batch ability, and easily. (@ocnbrze)

It has a lot more to offer too, it now comes with MyToolbox which can do the following:
- Freeze bloatware, system apps
- UnFreeze frozen applications
- Wipe Cache of applications
- Wipe Data of applications
- Uninstall applications
- Break the Android Market Link to Apps
- Link Apps to the Android Market
- Force Close applications

Lately i've been using backup manager it does a good job of backing up my sms/mms, call log, and apps. I like having the apk just incase i forgot to run titanium before flashing a new rom. (I have done this a few times now and it really doesn't get any better). I know I can schedule a backup but c'mon when you hear of a new ROM sometimes your excitement gets the best of you. I have seen mixed reviews on this but it seems to work for what I want it for and who can ask for more.

Try out these apps from the market:

1. Auto Manager
2. SD Speed Increase
3. VM Heap Tool

SD Speed increase does not work nearly as good as Scripting, the script for speeding up the sd access on boot works very very well, I now have my boot up time down to 32 seconds including the SD....which includes an additional 123 apps that I have installed. And I still have 263MB available.
