SMS question and browser?

First, thank you to everyone here. I have been reading this forum almost daily since I got my Eris, and the advice has helped me a lot. Plus, some of the debates can be quite interesting and entertaining. I've made some changes, downloaded, installed (and uninstalled!) some apps, and done lots of experimenting and I have a few lingering questions. I apologize if these exact questions have been answered before - I have searched and not found exactly what I want to know.

First, it might help to answer my questions if you know my goals for my phone and my typical usage:

Most importantly, I want to be able to unplug from my charger at 8 a.m. and plug back in when I go to bed - say 10:30 p.m. I do not want to have to charge throughout the day. I understand that my use may dictate an exception to this, but I want that to be rare and from obviously more use - not just random.

I will not tolerate performance issues - lag, whatever. I'm sure that most of you feel the same.

Typically, I make a few calls (maybe 1.5 hours of talk per day), send some texts (~20 per day), check email regularly, and browse the internet for a total of 15-30 minutes. I don't want or need a lot of specialized applications. I like widgets - some of HTC's clock and weather widgets are cool, but I will not use them if I can't make it all day on a charge. I follow all of the tips in the Sticky on battery life.

(Sometimes I miss my Blackberry because of push email, and no battery issues. With my use, my Curve lasted all day with power to spare. But that's sort-of another subject.)

So, here are my questions:

1. I installed and use Handcent for SMS and like it. I have it set as default. Why do I always see the stock messaging application running in addition to Handcent when I check Adv. Task Manager? Anyway to stop this?

2. Can't decide between Dolphin and stock browser. Other differences aside, does anyone really know if this choice impacts battery life? I will use whichever has the least effect on battery drain. I know that I will have to manually empty cache on stock browser, but that's no big deal.

3. I know there's a lot of debate about this subject in general, (understatement!), but even for those opposed to use of ATM or ATK, are there any negatives associated with simply having the programs installed? Most potentially negative issues, (battery drain and performance) seem to be with using the programs. I would like to keep one, in case of trouble, but I won't if simply having it installed impacts my battery life or performance.

I realize that the answers lie mostly with trial and error and what seems to work best, but any input will be appreciated.

Sorry so long! Thanks again for all of the help and advice.

Go into your settings and turn off the notifier for messaging. This will kill the stock SMS message you are getting.

Describing your usage, you are not going to be able to go 8AM-10PM without getting some additional juice. That 1.5 hours of talk time really drains the battery.

I usse Dolphin browser. Like it better, dont believe it effects my battery life.

1: Messages>Menu>Settings>Uncheck Notifications

2: Dolphin

3: It seems that Task Killers have affected some but not all. It could possibly be with a combination of other apps. Download one and see how it works for you.

For your not wanting to charge issue, run the phone completely dead for about 3 days before charging again. Conditioning the phone this way seems to help with battery life
