Xoom Family Edition

Anyone thinking of picking on of these up? The price is a little easier on the wallet than previous Xoom's. It seems to still have nice build quality with aluminum back and soft touch around the edges for better grip. One thing that actually has me pretty mad though is this new version comes with an HS IPS display vs the VA displays in our units. I know that it may not have been available when Moto released the Xoom but I am still irritated by it. Hmmm, wonder if I can perform some implant surgery........

I went ahead and picked one up. It does have USB charging. The only ports on it are 3.5mm headset, micro sd, micro hdmi. If you have any other questions let me know.

Wow, microUSB charging, lighter than the original Xoom, still has a microSD slot, and IMHO the FE is better looking. Maybe I will try to snag one of these after all!

When I want to travel light ( a long weekend trip or so) and leave my laptop at home, I REALLY like being able to bring my BT headset, smartphone and a tablet and power them all from a single unified charger.

I also picked one of these up hoping that it would work with netflix as advertised. It doesn't.

It also comes with honeycomb 3.1 and there has been no mention of an update to 3.2 or what the path to Ice Cream Sandwich will be.

I'm taking it back.

Well, Honeycomb 3.1 is for the wi-fi. 3.2 is for the 3/4G tabs. I'm sure when the time comes for ICS, it will be available for the FE tabs

I'd really love to see android on tablets become a platform worth developing on, but it seems they still have a lot of work to do. Maps crashed on me within 1 min of usage. Vendors are still behind when it comes to keeping devices updated. Maybe ICS will fix this, but I won't hold my breath.

Yea but the problem is it takes forever to charge. Took 10 hours to charge from 20% to 100%.

I picked up the FE and was wondering about docks. Do the dock for a regular Xoom fit the FE? The only ports are usb and mini-hdmi on the bottom

I'm looking into getting the family edition for myself but the whole kid zone and all the other random apps it comes with are kinda making me not wanna cause i don't want it to be there taking up space. Can you uninstall the kid zone app and all the other apps it comes with that are games? i know you can't uninstall the google apps but just the other ones.

I mostly just top mine off anyway, so it would be perfect!

I rarely discharge below 50%

The pre-loaded software can not be removed. They actually take up very little space. You can also install up to a 32GB SD card for a total of 48GB so unless your going to install a ton of music and videos space shouldn't become an issue.

Merriam Webster= 312KB
MOTO Pack= 252KB
MOTOPRINT= 5.86MB (this is a really nice app to have)
Quick Office Pro= 6.55MB (this is the full version and is also a very nice app to have)
Sim City Deluxe= 88KB
Twonky= 244KB

As you can see most of the preinstalled software is just installers that will direct you to install the full app once you click on them. The two full apps provided are ones that I use on a regular basis and are well worth having.
