Help Help: Milestone using battery in 7 hours, GPRS/3G data running etc

Hey

My Motorola has begun to behave strangely. I think they lost the battery too quickly, so I have yesterday installed Netcounter and a Task Manager to see what it may be due.

Since yesterday, it downloaded 53 MB of data, including 28 MB today. It's too much, because I have hardly used it for anything but standby. There obviously mail pops up on it, but I read them on my PC. I have not used Google Maps, Web browsing or other things.

WiFi is off, but my battery is at 50% (this morning at 7:30 am, it was at 100% - now 4 hours later it's 50%).

Last night the Milestone was warm on the backside, but not where the battery is placed, but closer to where the sender/radio is placed.

Conclusion: Some programs must be running all the time,

1 hour ago I closed all programs using Task Manager.
But now, all these apps seems to be running (according to task manager):

Phone Portal
Calendar
*Handcent SMS

Music
Settings
Email (ikke google mail)
Maps
Media Gallery
Bluetooth file transfer
Smart Alarm clock
Messaging
Facebook (jeg bruger ikke facebook widget)

Practically all programs. I have only used programs marked *
** = programs I can understand if they're running, i.e. widgets

Why does all my programs start? And which are using the Internet?

I looked at settings -> about phone -> battery usage:
android.process.acore: 71%
Facebook: 6%
display 5%
Android system 5%
Phone idle 4%
Cell standby 3%
Google 3%
Android os 2%

Cell Standby should be >90% since I've not using the phone today.

Any ideas? Should I erase all and restart? Or is it because I have not updated yet (still running the 2.0 version from out of the box)

I like the phone, but this is just not good enough.

It's not necessarily that it's all those programs running which is draining your battery, it could be that one or two isnt allowing the phone to sleep, and the processor is whirring at full capacity the whole time.

Go to Settings -> About Phone -> Battery use, and see if you can figure out whats going on.

Now it's not working at all.

I took the battery out of the phone, put it back and poweret on, but it does not start. After some time it says that process.core.android is not responding, and no matter if I select force close or wait nothing helps.

How do I do a master reset on the phone? I think that's the only thing I can do.

u can do a factory reset by going to settings from home -> privacy settings - > factory data reset

btw.... i ve been using my phone for 3+ hrs now... and im still at 90%.

the 2.0.1 patch helps a lot.

I could not go to settings - I could do nothing at all. I solved the problem after doing a wipe.

1. Pulled the batteri off
2. Press and hold the camera button while turning the phone on (keep the holding the camera button)
3. You'll get a symbol with an exclamation mark
4. Press the volume up while pressing the camera button
5. Choose "wipe" and follow the instructions.
6. Reboot.

I think I'll wait until Motorola releases the official 2.0.1 ROM.

Tones of applications start to run once your milestone connects internet. The more applications installed, the more they run background. That's Android OS feature which support running apps in multitasking mode. Luckily, apps run background but do not drain your battery. Please try to not close the applications running at background as the OS may turn into UNSTABLE status.

For my experience, I used taskiller to kill unnecessary used applications and the OS failed to connect internet and Alarm failed to due (since I killed the browser and Alarm clock before)

The 2.0.1 patch will help you a lot by improving the battery usage. Mine got upgrade to 2.0.1 and find battery runs better.

I'm currently testing the battery - yesterday at 1 pm it was fully charged, and now, after 26 hours, it's on 60%.

I've only used installed a few apps, customized the home screens, watched some pictures in the gallery, ant not used WiFi, Bluetooth etc. I guess that's okay, but it's gonna be hard to make the battery last for more than one day with normal use of the phone.

Luckily, today I received a car holder with charger.

Edit: It's 4pm: Still 60 %, so that is after 27 hours.

Battery usage:
Display: 36%
Phone idle: 24%
Cell Standby: 20%
Android system: 8%

Still surprised that cell standby is not what drains the battery most.

Update II:
After 33 hrs: Battery still on 50%
After 43 hrs: Battery on 40%

Update III:
Surfed on the Internet for about 5-10 minutes.
After 46 hrs: Battery on 30%

Update IV:

After 53 hrs. it says 15%, please charge battery.
Used Google Maps for about 5 mins while driving.

Don't know if it would have been even better if I'm not using a battery status widget.

I'm struggling to get a day out of mine but I use a lot of 3G interneb, my battery reports the screen is the culprit usually chugging down about 60%. I've just updated to 2.01 and hopefully I'll see an improvement...

the screen on the thing uses 90% of its battery power. just turn the brightness way down and have it time out quick as **** when you aren't using it.
it's like in your house; turn shit off when you are done using it. you wouldn't just walk out your house and leave ALL your gear and ALL your lights switched on. this is no different.

53 hours no charge???

Yes, 53 hrs with no charge. The cradle in my car was not connected until the test was over. But hardly used it, so the screen was off most of the time. And then 53 hrs is not very much with such a large battery. A low-end phone with 1500 mAh battery would probably last for more than a week, because it uses very little power.

However, the Milestone charges fast. When driving 15 minutes it quickly goes from about 40% to 70% while charging it in my new car holder (I use a Brodit car holder with a cigaret light adapter).

I still run Android 2.0.1

Im surprised that people have stopped posting in this thread!
Id like to know how its possible for some users to advertise 53 hours without charge whilst others on other threads rate similar times to mine 8 hours max with normal usage... i run 2.0.1 too
is my battery defective? i did do a full charge on the first day for about 3 hours before using it

I have had the same problem with my brand new 2.1 milestone. My phone last 6-7 hours max before the battery is exhausted. Bluetooth, Wifi , GPS is off but 3G is on. However, then i switched to set it to 2G only, there appears to be tremendous difference. For the sake of testing, try it for a day. Set your phone to use 2G only. To me, that's not really an acceptable compromise. I mean, i paid for a 3G phone and paid for 3G flat rate service but i am forced to hardly use it because of my current phone. On a side note, my previous phone, a HTC SNAP, had a 1800mA standard battery and i could go the entire day till 11pm with bluetooth & 3G always on.

I've also seen some really weird stuff with my phone and battery % reporting, which i have seen other people reported before. There were times when it when from 100% to 90% after like 5 minutes of use. Then there times when it stayed at 80% for like 3 hours, but when i rebooted, it then showed the true percentage (40%). Just today, when it was down to 20% and i shut it off to charge, the charge screen immidietly showed 50%.

i am having the same batt lifespan issues as you, and I need 3G in the background.At the most I will get is close to 8 hours. I even bought a seidio spare batt. The slim one, and that is just as bad or slightly worse(and that messes up the batt meter reading in a way too).

I have a HTC hero as well, and on benchmarks, the milestone batt life should be better. But in reality my Hero can last me at 12-15 hours with 3G, web browsing email and music listening(3 hours)

My problems continued on/off, and now I've sold the Motorola.

Now I'm using the Samsung i7500 Galaxy, which has the same battery issues. So within a month I'll boy a HTC Desire, HTC Legend or SonyEricsson X10.

I know there's differences between the speed on SD cards (class 4 or class 6). But are there also diffences when it comes to the use of power?

Some correction from me..htc snap is only have 1500 mAh standard battery, and it cannot compare with milestone..it is smartphone not a touch device..

touch devices will need some power for their display.

i am was htc snap users before i use milestone, i suggest you to set your display to very low and..use 3g connection only when you are need only, and switch it back to 2g only while standby.

if you still want your 3g all the time just charge your phone to your PC via usb every time the phone in standby mode.

if you are heavy user bring some spare battery or buy seidio extended battery..
