MotoActv - what do you think?

I know this doesn't really belong here but I'm interested to hear what my fellow Bionic nerds thing of this new "toy?"

I think it looks really neat - if it works!

I'm a cyclist and I currently carry a GPS to track my rides - this is 1/4 the size and does so much more too. I've also started running (sshhhh LOL) and having the GPS capabilties PLUS ipod-type entertainment in a unit that small just seems awesome.

Thoughts?!

Like you said, if it works, it could be an awesome tool for *active* people. I sure could make some use out of it!

I could see biking with it, but it's just much for me to consider running with it.
I can't run with anything more than an iPod shuffle. I don't have to think about it or mess with it.

I carry the Bionic and use "My Tracks". I think it is fairly awsome. (Free in the App Market)

I use to use jog tracker and carry my Incredible and my ipod with me when I went running. Kind of a lot to carry, I used jog tracker for a week just to see how many miles my routes were. Now that I know, I just bring the ipod heh. I also used it for when I was cycling during the summer as well though. I can't imagine carrying my Bionic with me while running.

I'm not familiar wit that one. My Tracks maps the route you took, it also reports your speed incremntally along the way and it maps the altitude along the way. I excted one of those but not all three.

for the road it's just too big for my saddle bag and for off road - well, let's just say I didn't buy the insurance on the phone **knockonwood**

and for running it's just too heavy - I use my ipod Shuffle now. I can't wait to get my hands on this little guy (MotoActv) to check it out! It's on REI's website already (lol) so hopefully the store will have it when it's released!

They do make an arm carrier for the bionic.

And a point perhaps worth mentioning ... if you go for a run 5 miles into the woods it might be handy to have a few tools with you ... like ... geez I don't know ... a phone?

When in Chicago and Boston I never saw a woman running alone ... ever. One of the strongest impressions I had when moving to Keene was being oa a run a mile away from anything and having a woman come running towards me in the opposite direction (running by herself) and say good afternnon as she passed. She knew I was there to watch out for her. Why? That's how its done here.

So ... carry a phone on your run into the woods ... makes total sense.

I don't run in the woods. I ride in the woods.
And I never ride in the woods alone.

I understand that it only goes four hours in a charge if you are tracking like that. You can get a Garmin watch for less than the Motoactiv that's actually a bit smaller. (Actually, you could get both the Garmin watch and a Shuffle for less, ar about the same.) Far less cool, though.

Sigh. I wish I could run in the woods. This is Houston. No woods, no hills....

I also own 4 dogs between 75 and 90 lbs including one Rottie. One of them is running with me if I'm going on a long run or close to dusk by myself. Not safe enough here to take off on your own - at least not for us women.

If I were going to drive somewhere and then go running - like say a park a half hour away, my phone would definitely go along. Dogs don't work very well against big cats or boars.

The MotoActv might be small enough for regular use though.....
Darn it, MtnbikerChk - you're going to make me spend more money, lol.

Uh, great, but does that mean that in order for the thing to work at all I have to also carry the phone around? I thought it was totally standalone. I go running partly to get away from texts, lol.

Okay - So I have had my Motoactv for a week now. I have yet to use it for a single really long workout, but I've done a number of "learning" workouts with it.

Initial thoughs:

> Phone sync is neat. You do have to have the phone within range.
> Counting steps etc. seems to be pretty accurate.
> I had some trouble getting my GPS connected the first time, but after that it locks in pretty quickly. I'll have to report back later on accuracy.
> Website looks pretty interesting - wireless device to PC transfer was a piece of cake. (I didn't even notice it happening, my info just appeared on the web. Nice)
> Music software works great - transfer from PC to device was also a piece of cake.

As with most forums, the MOTOACTV forum is mostly full of whiners, but everything on mine works smoothly and as advertised. I think I'll really like it.
