I have an Eris, now let's make it work!

I'm a long time Palm user (way back to the Pilot), but I switched to the Eris. Now I need to replace some of my old Palm apps with Adroid equals.

>Phone Application replacement. I'll look at any. I'll also settle for a way to just have the default launch with the dialpad closed.

>Outliner. Not a checklist. I need indent and line up down. Similar to ThoughtManager (if anyone is familar with this Palm app).

>A button remapper. Specifically to remap the find button to launch my Outliner when I find it.

>NKJV Bible.

>Backup program. Something simple that will back up everything on the Eris so it can reinstall everything after a factory reset.

I know about searching. I have. The returned info is massive. I'm posting for help here and on a couple other sites to try and narrow it down.

Wow, I can't believe the lack of responses! No welcomes or nothing! Palm users were so much more polite! :)

Anyway, I found an app I have not seen mentioned here. It's called Button Shortcut, free on the market. It allows remapping Find and Camera button. It worked on the Find button, but I can't comment on the Camera as I have an Eris.

Doesn't help to come to the forum with a "Here's what I want to do now it's up to you to help me" sort of attitude.

Do a search for "Palm" and you'll find a bunch of previous message threads dealing with many of the questions you asked. There's even a social group for us former Palm users.

Always helps to SEARCH first.

Welcome aboard.:)

Welcome! :)

Sadly, not everything has an Android counterpart (yet?), some things aren't even possible on this platform. I was severely disappointed when I first came to Android; now I'm "just" putting up with it.

You know, I still carry my old Palm around specifically so I can use the Bonsai outliner ... and a couple of other apps.

Button remapping is apparently a tricky thing to do (amazing isn't it).

As for the bible thing, I'd suggest you search AndroLib for "bible" (unless the NKJV is some tech acronym ).

Backup ... how I wish there was something like BackupMan; apparently there are a few for-pay apps (unavailable to me :(); and also file managers such as Astro have some backup features. Finally, I just read that Titanium Backup can do a proper full backup (settings, data, and all) but it does require you to "root" your device and install additional tool libraries, and I'm having a bit of trouble making it work.

That's all the help you're gonna get from me in one helping! :p

LOL. Way to twist my topic. You even used quotes! LOL.

Patient: "Doctor, Doctor...I have a headache and my stomach hurts..is there anything I can do???"

Doctor: "Well have you searched the medical database and talked to some students? Have you attempted some suggested cures, even though you don't fully understand them, and allowed them to mess you up even more? Until then, don't bother me?"

LOL. And I've obviously done much searching (as I originally stated). I've even contributed what I've found (Button Shortcut).

Thanks for the welcome, Senior member.

As for the others:

I also found NoteEverything and have purchased (I like the way items in checklists can be moved...not like Palm, but best I've found).

Reading many compliments (while searching) about Astro and MyBackupPro.

Edit for another quick question: On the Market, I've found "Astro File Manager" by Metago. I'm downloading now, but want to make sure this is one everyone is refering to (I'm suspicious because it's free).

Astro is free, nothing to worry about. Just because an app is free doesn't mean it's bad or anything. A good chunk of the apps on the market are free, but are supported by lil ads in the program that aren't all up in your face advertising everything from your dog to the statue of liberty.

As for the previous comment regarding how you acted, it was a bit rude considering nobody had replied yet and your response was "Wow, I can't believe the lack of responses! No welcomes or nothing! Palm users were so much more polite". Now that there was rude, maybe you should have just stuck with a palm if palm users were so much more polite. You ever consider that people just didn't know the answer, and didn't want to just fill up the thread with junk replies saying "welcome"?

If you haven't noticed you use google for contacts. It is the easiest and best way to backup contacts. Everything you enter into your phone contact list is automatically updated on you gmail contacts. As for SMS backup their are as some pointed out free apps on the Market to do this so search for yourself and find what works. Email back up is the same as contacts. If you don't want to use the Dial pad but want to view a call record go to People and scroll over to call history. Aslo use widgets and shortcuts to do quick launch (single press access to apps, people, bookmarks, etc.) As for a bible I am not sure what one that is but I assume it is a King James version of some sort. Again look in the Market for the Bible you need. If it is not there contact one of the Devs of a Bible app and ask that they make one I am sure someone will be happy to help a fellow Christian(?). If you have more specific questions please ask but I thin this is what you are asking as I am not versed in Palm speak but gave it a shot.

So if i were to punch someone and had a smile on my face while i did it then it would be alright? Ok then.

I was trying to let you know I was only playing around. But since you want to be confrontational:

tdavis: Yes, I use Google for email, contacts, and schedule. At first I was against the whole cloud concept (I still hate that I can't save my apps and such on my computer...that's the backup I'm looking for), but I must admit I'm loving Google calander. My wife and I work together and we've linked our calanders and it so much easier keeping track of our schedules.

^ Okay now, you've both had your say. I hereby declare that part of the thread closed.

Now, back to our regular programme...

JKib, I realised that while I did mention Titanium Backup, nobody's mentioned Nandroid Backup yet. It takes a bit of virtual screwdrivering to install, but it's rock solid. Nandroid will make a complete image of your phone, which is then stored in "/sd/nandroid" and can be freely copied to your pc (or another phone even).
