Deleting Preinstalled Apps?

Is there anyway you can do that for the Samsung Galaxy Prevail? Things like Hookt, Layer, Maps, Poynt, SCVNGR, ThinkFree Office, UberSocial... Shit I will never use and really don't want taking up room in my phone. Please tell me there is a way to get rid of these without rooting since this damn phone won't even root!

What problem are you having when you try to root? And no, root is required to remove bloatware.

I noticed alot of people having problems with the one click root so I was hesitant and I tried the Odin Root method and it was a success the first time. Very fast and easy.

I just had to try it several times, but it worked in the end.

I started deleting bloatware using Titanium Backup and now my settings button is nowhere to find, and also my google talk is gone! I did a factory reset but the settings button didn't come back. Please help.

Did you make a backup with CWM first? If not hail Odin.

Did a backup afterwards using My Backup (in preparation for the factory reset), but settings still gone and can't restore anything because it says my settings are not to allow installation of anything that doesn't come from the Android Market....

If you did a backup afterwards, then what you need to restore wont be there anyway.... ALWAYS backup before making any changes. You'll definately need to use Odin to get everything back to normal.

UberSocial has a way to uninstall listed on their site though I have not tried it. Really I wanted to find out if anyone has to see if it is safe:

I still haven't found a way to delete the rest of the garbage you mention. Cause not only are they useless but 2 of them keeps updating against my permission. (Android Market keeps changing user permissions for automatic updates)

Has anyone tried Ubersocial's delete method?

What is Root anyway? Is it an application?

I did the one click root only a month after I bought my phone, I'm a windows guy, was very nervous about manipulating the phone in any way without knowing anything about it, in fact I'm finding learning about it so complicated, it feels like that first day I was introduced to Windows for the first time, took me years of reading and messing up my pc and fixing it to get the knowledge I have now, and unfortunately, by the time I figure out Linux and Android at a level to where I am with Windows, the Android might be absolete by then, too much info out there. So much too learn and understand, I cant take it anymore. I'm not a Dev, and suck at Programming. But I am a TechHead. You have to already understand all this stuff before understanding all this stuff. All the Devs talk like they are talking to Devs, can't understand any of them and need to constantly look up every other word on the net to try and follow along.

But anyway back to Rooting - going by the directions exactly, it worked fine the 1st time, and it allowed me to download and install all kinds of different and cool apps I otherwise couldnt use at all.

It makes the Phone so much better, gives you access the the "whole" of the phone.

The one click root thing will install superuser, after it's installed, you don't even have to mess with it really.

It just gives you Admin privelages and access, etc.

Thanks for taking your time for that real informative reply. I too am a Windows guy, and before that DOS. But those days of having to tinker with operating systems are supposed to be over. I've come to the conclusion that for me to get what I want is simply to get rid of this freaking android and go back to Blackberry. With the shape RIM is in, I should be able to get one real cheap pretty soon.

I want simplicity. Androids don't offer that.
