I think verizon getting the nexus is a good sign that they will continue getting the nexus and hopefully by the time my contract is up moto gets to build a nexus.
USB has 4 rails to connect to the computer. a Data+, Data-, Voltage+, and Voltage- rain, abbreviated D+, D-, V+, V-. The v rails are for power, and thus only carry 5VDC, with the V+ rail having 3.3V and the V- rial holding -1.7V (IIRC--long time since I read a USB spec sheet. Even then, I wanted shielding info, not data transmission spec). The two D rails are where data is transmitted.
So, when you plug a phone into a computer this is what happens"
1) computer applies the voltages to V- and V+, limiting to 100mA
2)Device (phone) then brings the D- (could be D+...I forget) rail to some voltage (probably 1.7) to signify if it wants just 100mA (think usb drives) or if it wants the full 500mA that USB is spec'd to provide.
3)Other routines to tell the host (computer) what the device is (a phone, external HD, external DAC, mouse, etc)
4) Data transmission on the D+ and D- rails.
So, you see that the host (computer) has to do a different set of interpretations than the phone. Having host capabilities/drivers can be coded into Android (The Nexus one has this with some ROMs, I believe) However, it IS NOT stock, and you cannot expect to just go plugging in a microSD card with some adapters and expect it to work.
[end technical stuff]
So, while possible, a dev needs to code it into a ROM. it is not a stock functionality.
EDIT: put stuff in hide/show tags so that no one had to read it if they did not want to. I believe this thread has gone into too many technical offshoots that only a few really care about, so I did not want to induce another one.
I wished carriers would let you switch with your plan from carrier to carrier keeping your grandfathered plan as long as you stay active, wouldn't that be awesome, Then the phone you want wouldn't be out of reach.
well i know that it will work with a USB gamepad, read it a couple of days ago on droid life, so i guess so, or does this not indicate so? sorry, im not fully knowledgeable on the technical aspects of this discussion
Amazon has a paid options from 20 GB to 1000 GB. I signed up for the free 5 GB, and then they gave me the 20 GB free when I bought some Amazon MP3s. 20 GB of cloud storage is plenty for me. And, for a limited time, they are offering a deal where your music does NOT count against your space limit with paid plans. https://www.amazon.com/clouddrive/learnmore/ref=sa_menu_acd_lrn2
I have question? As we move to this cloud storage doesn't that just mean Verizon will get more of your money, because you will have to use more or a bigger data plan to get to the stuff you have in cloud? The ideal is great when on Wifi, but 2gb data plan will go fast. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks all.

That would be a great idea. However, there would have to be some sort of time limit, even if only 90 days to ensure all billing and info can be properly moved from company to company. I know they do ok when you switch carriers but doing that in massive numbers I would see causing problems.
Apparently, USB hosting is already a feature in honeycomb, so it wouldn't be too illogical to think that it'll be a feature in ICS as well, especially given this Phandroid article.
SO in conclusion, while in no way as convenient as a SD slot, theoretically, you can connect anything from an SD card to a giant 2 TB external hard drive to your phone, and have all your media with you. I can see that as an option for some.

use the third link to secure first two to the rear of the phone and get all the storage you want
edit: upon further thought, might even be able to do without the third link, if you can find a gelatin type case you can stretch around the thumb drive on the backside
Ditto. I have 5gigs available on dropbox for school stuff. I have Picasa for pictures. I have Google Music for Music. And I have box.net for movies or any other large files I need including e-books, comics, app backup/storage, etc...
Google music really seems nice so far.
I am also on unlimited Data and (SOON TO BE GNEX) LTE!
I just checked into Box.net's 50GB Personal plan but the maximum file size is 25mb!
My movies are avg 1.6GB! Well THAT ain't gonna work... I would have to go to the business level, which is a 2GB file size limit. $15/mo for 500GB ain't bad...

The other sadface is that it DOWNLOADS files instead of streaming. So what's the point of it? If it's going to clog up my memory, I may as well just leave it on the phone and not mess with uploads/downloads. Or the cost. <--- there it is

I don't know anything about this cloud stuff, but apparently I better start learning. Your question appears very relevant. I'm grandfathered with unlimited data on VZW, but I certainly wouldn't want to get throttled by VZW simply for accessing my own content. I would hope there is a mechanism in place to discern between a users cloud content and new data content. Otherwise you could be on to something. Wireless companies could conceivably create even more revenue by forcing people to the cloud.

...and so it begins. See how easily they are getting you to shell out for what you already own?
And what sort of battery hit will you take with the screen and radio on for a couple hours?
The practical solution for many will be swapping out files on the phone, frequently.
No offense, but I'm quite surprised that Razr got you swayed over just with looks and now you can overlook smaller screen resolution, locked BL, Blur, bloatwares in it that you were so heavily against. Look is subjective but Nexus seems to have metal body underneath plastic cover, so its build quality is non-issue to me.
Sorry to see you go, but it was joy to have you here. Like you Samsung and Moto are my only android manufacturers. Just wish Moto drops Blur after Google acquisition.
Cloud storage is going to become a big racket. Big rip-off I say.I don't have a'lot stuff but it will be a cold day in hell I pay monthly for someone to keep my stuff.16GB Nexus will be fine for me.

1. Get a free dropbox account
2. Do all the stuff to get free space
3. Invite (sucker) your friends
4. Learn about Oracle's Virtual box
5. ???
6. Profit.
Free account with 19GB space = keep your paid service.
