From the Moto website -
WCDMA 900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, HSDPA 7.2 Mbps (Category 7/8), EDGE Class 12, GPRS Class 12, HSUPA 2.0 Mbps
Network and/or SIM card dependent feature, not available in all areas. Airtime, data charges, and/or additional charges may apply. Wireless email functionality requires an email account with wireless server capabilities
Hope this helps.
(currently running a Defy on AT&T with full functionality. AND it's not counted as or detected as a smart phone on their network. )
no you are not. unless you are seeing the H symbol then you are not. YES thats right. this phone can run on AT&T's HSDPA network if reprogrammed. I know, I've done mine and know the DEFY very well. This phone doesnt even get that on t-mobiles network.
What are you trying to say?
There is no "reprogramming" required for the Defy to work on AT&T's UMTS network, aside from entering the "SIM unlock code", and having an AT&T SIM and data plan ($10/mo MediaNet will suffice). FWIW, I'm regularly achieving 3Mbs-5Mbs dl speeds on AT&T with the Defy.
Listen, because you dont know how to achieve this does not mean its not possible. I have a defy and have done it. As soon as I can take pictures and show you I will post it.
AT&T and T-mobile uses different bands. period. If you didnt know this, then I suggest you do some research. And just because I am a new member does not mean I did not do what I said. If you read earlier, I said I got my defy on AT&T's HSDPA network and I have the H symbol on my defy to prove it.
What are you talking about? I'm only asking you to clearly explain yourself, as your post is contradictory.
You quoted shalemail and "I guess" you were trying to tell them that they "were not" (?) on AT&T's UMTS, but shalemail's post was confirmation that shalemail "is" on AT&T's UMTS network "because of my thread about it" from "last year".
Now you are telling "me" that "I don't know how to get on AT&T's UMTS network with the Defy", when the pic is of "my Defy on AT&T's UMTS network"?
Did you not understand, that I understand that it works, from "my thread from November"? Click here as it seems that you have not yet already done so: http://androidforums.com/t/217819-t-mo-motorola-defy-working-t-3g-850-band-only.html
ok lets clarify. I never said the word UMTS in any post. When i said NO, I was talking about "full functionality" and meant to say that the phone can reach yet another level that most of you are unaware of.
Ok, but the OP's inquiry was about "UMTS".
"Full functionality", from shalemail's post was about having data/text/calls/etc, full smartphone functionality, on AT&T's 3G network...yet is only billed as a "standard phone".
What "other level" are you referring to, given that HSDPA, or rather "H" as you stated, is part of UMTS? If you are referring to H+, or speeds above 14.4Mbs, then it is still UMTS technology.

does your phone show that it is connected to HSDPA ? NO
does your phone show the H symbol instead of 3G? NO
3G just means regular UMTS 3G data
H means that it is is using HSPA, a faster protocol for UMTS 3G.
- HSPA is a "protocol" within the "standard" of UMTS.
- HSPA starts at 1.2Mbs.
- I'm getting 3-5Mbs on AT&T's UMTS network.
What's your point? Seriously, I genuinely do not understand how having H vs. UMTS is making the Defy less functional, or "not work" on AT&T? We all agree that the "T-Mobile branded Defy" has "connectivity and functionality" on AT&T's "high speed" network. For all intents and purposes, any data rates above 1Mbs are gravy, given that the $10/mo. AT&T data will allow access for the Defy. The only limiting factor is that the Defy most likely does not have the hardware for H+...but again, nobody here was asking about H/H+. Having H vs. UMTS is a moot point as far as "functionality"...especially if you are not near a tower that will support the data rate.
dude, i am getting it. I dont see why you are so defensive when hsdpa is a faster protocol of 3G. it is considered 3.5G that why the H shows up. I never mentioned H+ either. i know the difference. The defy can indeed step up to this speed I know i have done it and noticed the change right away.
Because you have not figured out how to do it doe snot mean you have to be so damned arrogant....
Actually, you are not getting it...I never posted any doubt that HSPA was "possible" on AT&T's network with the Defy, I only stated that this thread was not about HSPA, yet you continue to think that I am contradicting your configuration. This is not the case. FWIW, I get the 3.5G symbol on all my Nokia phones on both AT&T and T-Mo.
You assume much, and assumed incorrectly. I never tried to configure "H" on my defy, I only wanted to get connectivity above Edge on a carrier other than T-Mo. Anything else is a bonus. Going forward, try not to confuse arrogance with a "request for information". The "?" were not used to denote irrefutable statements of fact, only for you to provide clarification of your initial statements, because they were not entirely clear to me.
Congrats on your "H" status on AT&T's network.

and noone cares if you never tried to configure the next level of 3G or"H", thats your problem. I simply posted that I have and you got stupid over it. get over your self.
Wow.

I know that AT&T and T-Mo use different bands...I have multiple phones on both providers. No one said you don't know what you are talking about, I was stating that "I don't know what you are trying to state". I clearly state in post #3 of this thread that the Defy will work on AT&T's UMTS network...how does this contradict you?
Actually with cyanogen mod 7 and t-mobile baseband 9.x.x.6 i have an "h" on t-mobile with a locked but rooted defy oh yea and running gingerbread smoothly "lovin IT"no you are not. unless you are seeing the H symbol then you are not. YES thats right. this phone can run on AT&T's HSDPA network if reprogrammed. I know, I've done mine and know the DEFY very well. This phone doesnt even get that on t-mobiles network.

...T-mobile is using 850/1700 band. but cool anyway because a stock t-mobile defy only shows 3G.. nice..
