I doubt other posters will be inclined to help you given the way you dismissively replied to Tom. Rooting is not an easy process and while the posters here are quite willing to assist others, when you come off as wanting to be spoon-fed the information you want rather than pursue the information you need on your own, or even review the link that Tom provided you with, you give the impression that you are not ready to deal with something as potentially involved as rooting your phone.

GingerBread
[ROOT]1-click root method
[Clockwork Recovery]Droid X/2 Overclock App - Easy & Noob friendly ;)
[ROOT APP]Titanium Backup 101

Froyo
[ROOT]1 Click root app on the market No PC needed! Root right from your phone!
[TUTORIAL]RoOoLeR's Ultimate Droid Guide ROOT / UNROOT / BACKUP / ROM / SBF / OVERCLOCK

that is from the guide that Tom linked you to.

so we have to know if your on Froyo or GB before you can go any further. Your probably on GB but we need to know for sure.

tom provided the best link to help you out, rooting is not a simple process, but at the same time its so simple you can do it.

the 1-click root app is what you need to use, unless your on .340 froyo, then you need to upgrade by getting .605

you should thank tom for his quick reply with the most proper answer that we provide.
cause he did infact answer your question.

ok first of sorry for being rude to you tom,but like i said i read it but didnt quite get it , but like someone said maybe not enough info , ok so the root process one click that i got , system version 4.5.605 kernel 2.6.62.9 build 4.5.1_57
i can use the one click method right?
but then what do i use for getting roms on there an making a back up?

you need to get either Droid X or Droid 2 Bootstrapper

and you need to hit bootstrap recovery, give it superuser access, then hit ok for success

then hit reboot recovery to enter into clockwork recovery
before installing anyrom, be sure to wipe data/factory reset within Clockwork Recovery(CWR) and be sure to wipe cache partition as well
then you need to install zip from sdcard
and you need to choose zip from sdcard

then install it, and reboot

as for roms, there are numerous roms to chose from that offer good battery life, no one here can tell you which rom is best for your phone, some may suggest apex
others may say ssm, some might say shuji

only way to know for sure is to download them, and install each one on your device, and run it for a day or so to see if you like it.

wiping data/factory reset will not erase your pictures, so dont fear that

first you want to root, then install titanium backup from the market (free)
license is $6 (worth it in my opinion)
once installed, create a widget on your desktop (easiest method i think)
select titanium backup in your widgets
select
Titanium Backup
(Actions)

then hit action and select
Backup all user apps

then you can install a rom and not have to worry about losing your data, just know that in order to get the game save point back, you have to reinstall the game (either through Tibu(titanium backup) or through the market, once you done that you need to restore the data to that game

***DONT RESTORE SYSTEM DATA, or DATA ON ALL APPS***

you only need to restore data on the apps you want to resume your saved place

can i use the droid x recovery the link u gave me not letting me dl it says unsuccessful

you can use droid x recovery
just hit menu
go to settings
applications
Development
and uncheck usb debugging

but when you have installed the rom of your choice, and you have set everything back up
go back and check usb debugging

you have to uncheck it each time you use droid x bootstrapper

on 2init roms you do not need to use a bootstrapper, only on moto based roms
