i got a droid eris on december 29th, i have sence then i have not been able to delete any text messages. I was ok with it at first but now its a problem and is making my phone lag. i try to delete them but it goes to a black page and freezes up and i eather have to force close or turn it off. is this happening to anyone else?

Yes several others have this problem. Search the forum and you will find them. There are a few apps on the market that apparently work well. Quick SMS delete or something similar. I'm sure the usual crowd will come in and blame HTC and the Eris for it, stating the Droid doesn't do it etc. Well, I spent a little time reading and have found that Google has done some improvements to the SMS app on Android 2.x(delete texts after so many days being one) Ive also noticed that my co workers Sprint Hero has a similar issue deleting long threads so I'm guessing its more likely Android 1.5 and how it handles text messages is the likely culprit. Hopefully the "fabled" 2.x upgrade will happen soon and it will fix this issue. Till then look for the other threads here and the app I mentioned to help you out.

I had this issue along with a few other known bugs: can't create google contacts, acore force closing, no sync, general instability, lag, and battery life as short as 3 hours to name a few. I tried just about everything to remedy our at least lessen the symptoms no avail. As a last resort before swapping out for a a new phone I bit the bullet and did a fresh install of the firmware. I didn't really want to have to take that measure as it completely wipes the phone and I wasn't looking forward to setting up from scratch but the problems were only getting worse so had no real choice.

Let me tell you: the difference was night and day! ALL of the previous issues were cleared up! No lag (well normal occasional lag typical of the device but nothing compared to before), text messages sent and received instantly rather than freezing the phone for 5-15 seconds, can now create google contacts and the battery easily lasts all day 10-16 hours with moderate-heavy use depending on my signal.

I don't know if perhaps some units shipped with corrupt firmware/files/etc and why some have so many problems while others do notor what, but this fixed it for me and now I'm quite happy with my phone again. It's been a couple of weeks and none of the symptoms have returned.

Sorry I don't have a link handy but it's floating around somewhere on the forum. PCD our something like that.

Hope this helps others as it has myself :)

i have the same problem my phone will not delete messages it used to when i first got it but now it just freezes up when i try to delete them!!

I'm assuming you've got several hundred, if not thousands, of messages on your phone. I'd suggest getting the 'delete old messages' app and letting it run overnight. If you do have that many messages then it's going to take a long time for them to get deleted.
