Things You Should Know (Precedent)

The Precedent is a Good Phone for PPL on a budget or NEW to android, there are a few and I mean a FEW things that can be done with it, 1 being the Root thanks to davew41 for the odin it is MUCH appreciated,

Some Things we really need to remember with these phones,
(1) It is severally limited on Storage Space,
(2) There are no Custom Roms for it (YET)
(3) It is Not Compatible with alot of APPS
(4) IT WILL NEVER GET GINGERBREAD (needs 512m ram and only has 384m)
(5) DO NOT OVERLOAD the processor, as it a 600mhz max Processor that is Factory Overclocked to 800mhz

With those said you can get a custom feel to it by adding custom launchers, sms apps contact apps and so on, I myself use Go LauncherEX and Go SMS Pro both very nice apps available in the market and are compatible with our phones. There are Literally 100's - 1000's of themes available for both these

You can get custom keyboards using Go Keyboard, Contacts using Go Contacts, and so on there are literally millions of custom wallpapers available, all you have to do is look around,

About the Carrier

Everyone is UNDER the assumption that Straight Talk Uses Verizon for these PHONES, UNTRUE they run on Sprint, verizon would not take the contract to host these phones on their network.

You can Flash sprint POSTPAID PRLs to these phones for better reception and possibly faster 3g (have not tried) as i get great reception and almost 200k a second downloads when tethering it to my laptop.

Thats about it I will add more as I discover it.. until then Happy Androiding...

so since i can't seem to find a way to get the msl for this phone how do i change the prl without it? I'm only asking you because you said it was possible. thanks.

i took my phone into sprint and got an MSL some lil punk behind the counter got it for me, cost me $20.00 (that depends on the punk and where you are too i imagine)

after that i will flash a new prl using CDMA Workshop just haven't tried yet as i have no reason to right now

i appreciate your reply, thanks for the help, that's kinda what i thought i had to do...

yeah i have tried everything i can find to get the MSL on my own before resorting to going to sprint store, and no luck i even tore the kernel apart and no luck finding the code that they used to hide the MSL, sprint wouldn't tell me what they did to get it, but when i put it in the hidden menu it worked so i am not complaining

Did you try to get CDMA workshop to at least read your phone?

I'm getting "phone does not answer"

If you did manage, can you detail how you connected and were able to get into ##DIAG# mode as I have seen listed in other thread here.. IE

Well to get into diag mode for the Precedent its ##33284# then enter your MSL which you will have to get from a Sprint store and it will cost you money, as for getting it to work with CDMA Workshop i have not tried as of yet but then again Myself have no reason too right now as my signal is usually 3 - full bars at my home and almost everywhere i go here.. which is accually amazing as my g/f's verizon phone doesn't even get that much signal in the house..

I used the alogcat app and method here (second post) http://androidforums.com/samsung-transform/293445-faster-3g-mod.html

start alogcat, ##3282#, edit, put in random msl, back to alogcat filter using the phrase msl, msl was listed in green text

Would you consider trying to getting a CDMA Workshop flowchart in, as this guide suggests that it can be done, and is just a tad short of accomplishment w/o your knowledgeable input. The end result would be an answer to many who would like to do as you suggest and change the PRL to something other than stock.

Thanks for your time and interest we all share in this forum.

Seconded. Been collecting PRLs for the last few days waiting to try them out. Currently on 61007, and with Chicago covered by USCC towers I can't roam on, I'd love something with the best/lastest Sprint SIDs

(4) IT WILL NEVER GET GINGERBREAD (needs 512m ram and only has 384m)

This is not entirely true. Look at all the development happening on the Prevail which is the exact phone hardware wise.

I doubt it would take much to make Horak's CyanogenMod ROM(Android 2.3.7) compatible with the Precedent. It actually runs great.

Just in case please DO NOT install any of the Prevail ROMs. They will not work. You will BREAK your phone.

I got CDMA Workshop to read my phone: ##8778# - Enter MSL - select USB....

FYI Iam a noob so make sure this isnt a bad thing from someone else before doing it. lol

so i wonder what it would take to get Horak to port his rom to the Precedent, if he needs the whole OS off the phone will gladly copy it to the SDCARD and zip it up and put it on my megaupload for him to get it...

Thanks to the last post, i have successfully flashed prl 01115 (business unlimited VZ Roam Prl) to my phone, the speed is slightly lower but the coverage seems MUCH higher thanks for the ##8778#

No Problem.... I will prolly be asking you how to do the flashing after I root my phone lol But I live in BFE and only have dialup so downloading Odin isnt an option till I find somewhere with wifi =(

whoa whoa whoa, you got charged for your msl? they arent supposed to give it out willy nilly but they arent supposed to charge for it either..

anyways

adb shell getprop ril.MSL

:)

command doesn't work with precedent. straight talk put in something that cloaks it, using alogcat method described in a post does work.. its a lil harder to do but you dont have to be rooted to get it either...
