My Xperia X10 stopped charging a little while back so i took it to my network provider to be sent for repair under warranty. 2 weeks later i received a text explaining it was back at the shop. I went to pick it up and found an Arc in the box!

Im v.happy with it, the x10 done my head in. The arc is a lot better, but can anyone shed any light on why this happened?? Is it a mistake on their part??

I believe it is a huge mistake made by provider, and it can also be interpreted as a theft. Why? Probably you got someone else's device by mistake and you didn't report it. Now, the other guy will be very dissapointed when he finds out that his device is missing and he got X10 instead.
Then there can be two logical outcomes:
1: he will complain and they (provider) will figure out they made a mistake and you will be asked to return the Arc.
2: he will complain but they will be unable to figure out where the mistake happened so they will offer him brand new Arc.
Outcome one is good for everybody but outcome 2 is better for you two users ofcourse and bad for provider.
Anyway, this could be very interesting. Can you please update us with the development of this story?

Cheers!

I am not sure it would be theft, as you didn't do anything to obtain this handset illegally and could quite easily claim that you believed it had been replaced with a like-for-like model, but with the X10 no longer being made, was replaced with a newer model.

This is a common thing for insurance claims, so certainly not unexpected.

In fact, this might have been totally intentional. If not, there's no chance the OP is going to get into trouble, or prosecuted for fraud/theft!

Now, if they ask for it back then that's different - but they should arrange to collect it at their expense, as well as returning the original phone that has been fully repaired.

In this day and age, no one repairs anything especially no big companies. They probably thought no point in repairing this and we will just send out another model but the X10 isn't being made anymore so they sent a similar model which is the Arc. Happens all the time.

Indeed, whilst we always try to repair in some cases it is more economical to go down the path of replacement with the same or similar model. However you can confirm if it was intentional by simply looking at the job report that should have come back with the phone as they tend to list the actions taken on this form.
