Root CM 7.1 & LorDmod

Just been talking to Prez on the subject of rooting a SGS for my mate, think that could possibly be the next thing i make a hash of, christ its a bit complicated (for me anyway):rolleyes:

I was chattin to someone on here about rooting an SGS... my wife has one... she's not that bothered, but I think it'll sort out some of the isues she's been having (her phone is just a bit rubbish)... by all accounts it's a 1 click job, just like the hack kit, so it shouldn't be too hard!! :D

On that topic... been AGES since I falshed anything... been a little busy on getting things sorted in the house - central heating n the like... just flashed the most recent CM7 and am about to start messing with changing the kernel and setting up to undervolt... feel like I've been missing out really!!
Got Lords latest kenel on mine but not got round to undervolting yet. Just took delivery of a brand new battery today so i'll see how that goes.

Haven't changed kernels before, but have been thinking about it for a while... just re-read El P's comment in another thread, have taken the kernel and uv script he so nicely put up and am backing up now to flash it in a bit!! :)

Yeah - my wife said the same. Also, there are times where the phone lights up and goes off again, then she gets a message that she has missed a call from someone without it ringing... I think it may sort that problem too... just need to convince her that she wants me to root it!!

As for 1 click rooting the SGS... can't remember who it was, but it was a user who has (had) and SGS... am sure that you could get the info from the all things root section for the SGS. :D

WOW - that was well quick!!! I couldn't actually believe that it was done so quickly to change the kernel... now to do the undervolting!!

No, looking forward to you trying it:D and letting me know how easy/hard it is

Easy, as long as you're careful: http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-...as-anybody-rooted-using-tool.html#post3287692

If you used the files linked there DURX, they kernel is an older kernel and needed tweaked to work with the release candidate, it might not play nicely with the stable release. He's on 8.1 now so you'll be better off using the one in his thread.

That's EXACTLY where I've just been reading EP... I didn't actually mess with the kernel, as you'd already done it and posted it for someone. I realise he's on 8.1 now (having had a bit of a look elsewhere), but I thought I'd give it a go with this and then look at changing in a couple of days (if I can get away with being an "android geek" as my wife calls me, while we're down there on our anniversary! Might have to wait until she's asleep!! :D

Just gonna "hammer it" a bit on gaming/youtube, etc and see how I get away with -25 and then look to go to -50, etc!!

It might not play nicely though, if you flashed the 7.3CFS-MIUI.zip, that zip was tweaked to work with the release candidate, not the stable release. For my peace of mind, please flash his latest version. (I've removed the kernel from that post now).

Go on then... as it's for your peace of mind!! ;)

All I do is what I've done before (for the one you're telling me to get rid of)... put on SD card, flash and reboot. Then do the UV with his app? Don't need to do any steps in between?

EDIT - which one would you suggest by the way?? CFS or BFS? I guess that the CFS 2WCR / BFS 2WCR is about being able to call record... I will definately be going for that version, why not have the functionality if it's available!?!?!

I guess that, as I've got the app now, all I'd need to do is flash the new kernel and play with the UV to see what I can get away with - is that right El P?

Yeah, but you'll need to tweak the UV each time you flash a new kernel.

Also take a look at your governor etc in the performance section of the CM settings. I'm SmartassV2, Min 460MHz, Max 1075MHz and my phone flies, you're free to play about though.

Thought as much...

Will do!!

Go for CFS, no 2WCR. I had it on when I was on LeeDroid and it got annoying after a while. Your choice though. :)

Yeah, that's what you do though, put on SD, backup, flash, reboot.

Sounds straight forward enough! What do you mean it got annoying??? Does it record all calls? I would have thought that it was only if you wanted it to!??!

It records everything. It was me being me more than anything else, I just got annoyed with it because I didn't really want and it was there by default. There were reports it had a negative impact on battery life too, but I didn't notice that.

You can go for it, but if you get decide you don't want it, deny the 2WCR app root permissions via the Super User app.

I would have preferred it to be able to press a button and have a call recorded... doesn't matter...novelty would have worn off anyway... not gonna give it a go (went for CFS as suggested - can always flash the 2WCR later if I want it)!

When it comes to govenors... shouldn't the min frequency be as low as possible?

It shouldn't technically make a difference as when the screen is off, the CPU shouldn't be doing much anyway. I found that if I went lower, when I got a call, it took a while for the screen to wake so I couldn't answer as soon as I picked the phone up. Your mileage may vary though, so you're free to experiment. Those are just the settings that worked well for me.
