    Hey guys,
so looks like i'm moving on from my beloved evo and getting an 3vo this weekend. i do not have one yet, but going to best buy this weekend to get one. and of course i plan on rooting it. i just want to know what are some roms that you recommend. and looks like there are not that many kernels out yet. i just want to get a heads up on the 3vo rooting world so that i know what i want by the time my new phone will be rooted.

any other advise or knowledge you want to pass on would be greatly appreciated.

I'm using CleanROM 2.7 with the bcblend kernel. It's pretty good overall. You can OC if you want. It's stable. It's quick, even at stock settings, and is easy to customize. The included ROM updater app will download the mods that work for it for you, all you have to do is flash them when you have everything you want.

As a piece of advice, do not let the staff update the phone for you. If it doesn't have HBOOT 1.5 already on it, you don't want it. Make that clear to them that they are not to update the device for you.

You can get full S-OFF with HBOOT 1.3 and 1.4. You get a mostly the same, but slightly more cumbersome 'unlock' through the HTC method. So if it's not already updated to 1.5, you definitely don't want it to update itself. Then you can just install a ROM that is based off of 2.3.4 and be as current as anything else.

in regards to hboot 1.5, did that come with one of the ota's released for the 3vo? is it not rootable with revolutionary?

1.5 came with the 2nd to last ota and makes revolutionary useless. You have to use the htc root method and with that root method you can not write to the /boot partition and to be able to flash custom kernels you have to boot into recovery through fastboot. Also, the evo3ds you are looking at buying now may already be updated. Id maybe ask how many they have and check the bootloader version before you buy

oh and, BIG AND, you need to make sure your java development kit and sdk are updated and correctly installed or HTC unlock will not work

You can flash kernels with HBOOT 1.5 unlocked via HTC unlock. You just have to do it through fastboot. It's not as easy as flashing kernels from recovery, but it's still possible.

And the revolutionary team have been on and off about finding S-OFF for HBOOT 1.5. I think they currently are off about it, seeing how the HTC unlock is 'good enough' and you can still flash everything you can get your hands on (even if it's a pita through fastboot).

I put MIUI on mine. Pretty happy with it!

i tried miui on the og evo and i did not like it to much, but that was a while back. too iphony for me. i know i can change themes and all, plus i would like to have 4g as well. i might just have to try it though on the 3vo, however. who knows i might just like it.

I don't like miui much either, but CM7 with tiamat kernel is pretty amazing for me

bluetooth and 3d features don't work though, so if you're somebody who uses those then it won't be good for you

sweet i did not know that the devs for tiamat also made one for the 3vo. that was my favorite kernel for the evo. definitely gonna checkout cm7 for sure now.
Hi and welcome! CleanROM 2.7 user here. So far am really liking it and the ROM Updater is a great feature.
i will take a look at cleanrom 2.7. is that a sense rom? man i feel like such a noob again. lol

Yep it is a Sense Rom! That ded does make a senseless one though. I would say SCrosler is one of the more active devs. There just aren't as many supporting devs for this phone as there was the EVO.

there seems to be plenty of roms out there for the 3vo. i am currently downloading chogardjr3d right now. might try king's ultra 3d and also scrosler's rom as well. gonna be a busy weekend. lol

i forgot to mention that i finally have s-off (after spending like an hour with the stupid "beta key invalid" crap) and i have TWRP on my phone.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Hay-all Yay-ya! Lol, having a rooted 3VO is like having a new phone every day :D Congrats! I love mine and haven't had a bit of trouble with it. Enjoy!

Hehe...You were not the only one. A lot of us had a bit of trouble. I felt lucky that it only took me 2 tries.

But with how many hoops you'd have to jump through if you had HBOOT 1.5, you still got it easy :p Glad you got a 1.3 phone :)

tbh a lot of it just comes down to whether you like sense or not. I came over from the NS4G camp so I'm used to AOSP, when I got sense it felt like pure bloatware to me so I went for CM7 and am loving it

For someone coming from a 4g though, (if you liked sense), then it seems like CleanROM is a pretty good consensus pick

I tried MIUI, and in my mind it felt too "iPhone-ish", no app drawer felt limiting

Awesome to hear that you were able to get a new E3D with the old HBOOT! Having to flash the kernel separately via fastboot would annoy the hell out of me... But i suppose if that were our only option, I wouldn't mind as much.

Grats on the new phone. Curious to hear what you think about the hardware compared to the OG Evo.

well so far so good. my phone feels way faster then the evo on just stock prior to rooting it. need to find me some kernels now. battery life is not that great so far. but of course i have been playing with it a lot. any suggestions?

i gonna give cm7 a try with the tiamat kernel in a bit.

For a while, netarchy had put out a kernel for evo 3d, and it was rediculously awesome. Then we got an OTA, and his kernel was no longer compatible. This was around late August. Since then, he hasn't given us any updates, which is unfortunate. On that last kernel, I was able to OC to 1.7ghz and it appeared stable.

Oh, I just checked the netarchy thread over at xda. He posted on Oct 21 the following:

Life's just got me a bit swamped atm, all my projects are a bit behind right now.

So maybe there's hope he'll come through at some point.

I think the community behind the Evo 4G was one of a kind. Evo 3D has a lot of support, but nothing like the Evo 4G has. I think that the E4G was quite the revolution in the Android world, and we shouldn't expect that again from a phone for a while.

so does the netarchy kernel work with hboot 1.3?

and i know what you mean. the evo in general was special to me. it was my first device that i rooted and the devs behind the evo really do know how to spoil you. my hope is that the 3vo is still a young phone and that more devs will come around to it as time goes by. i just hope that mik comes around to the 3vo sometime soon.
