Well, I finally rooted, so that I can start enjoying this phone. Before I did any changes, I figured I'd share a before...

I just bought Circle Launcher for $1 in Market, and I love it. Highly customizable and I was able to delete all of the icons off of one of my homescreens.

The musical note icon is the Circle Launcher (you can change icons)

I also bought the Circle Launcher icon pak by Vision Mobility, it has tons of icons that can be used to skin the Circle Launcher icon, or you can use it with ADW Launcher as desktop icons

Brand new user to the forum. Just got myself a Samsung Galaxy S2 and need to customise it Anyway, I adore the themes you guys are putting out.

My phone is unrooted. Is there anyway I can change all the icons in my applications tray? And is there anyway I can alphabetise all the icons in the grid view?

A good place to start is downloading GoLauncher or someting similar (ADW Launcher, Launcher Pro). They are all good in their own ways, I just happen to like Go Launcher the best. You can download themes for Go Launcher (an easy way to customize the look of your phone) or you can use an app like SimpleText to create your own text icons. Icon packs are also for download on XDA Forums. Then use Desktop Visualizer to create custom icons with whichever icon you wish.

I'm not sure about the alphabetizing icon in grid view, but I'm sure someone else can help!

All of this can be done without rooting. Have fun!

That's a Beautiful Widget (or possible a Fancy Widget, but the temp range looks like BW), both paid on the market, don't recognize the skin

NSutherl is correct in everything, but to expand a bit...

Rooting is not necessary just to change to look or UI of your homescreen and even beyond. The best and easiest thing to do is install a third-party launcher. GO Launcher is not my favorite, but it is easy to apply themes, and there are a lot of them. I have been using ADWLauncher EX for about a year now and while it is really good and versatile, it's a little buggy and likes to force close about once daily. The free ADW.Launcher seems to be more stable. Before ADW, I used LauncherPro which was all-around good and very stable. Never had a problem with that one and it seems to have the most logical options for customizing.

Most aftermarket launchers let you do different things with the App Drawer, like alphabetizing, categorizing, or even just hiding selected apps from the drawer entirely. If you want another way to organize apps beyond the App Drawer, try something like Folder Organizer, Circle Launcher, or SiMi Folder. All of these apps allow you to organize apps into categories and even have a simple button on the homepage to bring up a menu or list of just the apps in that category.

Although Samsung usually has a pretty cool lockscreen, if you want to do other cool stuff like custom unlock sliders, custom wallpaper on the lockscreen, or even adding any widget you want to the lockscreen, you have to install WidgetLocker - Paid App. To see what cool stuff you can do with just your lockscreen, check this out: Post Your Lockscreen Screenshots (WidgetLocker, etc.).

Desktop Visualizer allows you to place any image at all on the desktop as a widget and use it to start an app, shortcut for a folder organizer, or even specific actions (using LauncherPro). There are tons of other apps that let you do cool things, but keep in mind that you're only changing the look (with some functionality)... so, as long as you're NOT rooted, you really can't mess anything up. So go crazy and let your imagination run wild!

Finally, I have an app on my Samsung Galaxy Tab called Screenshot It which takes screenshots on unrooted Samsung Galaxy Tabs and phones. Be sure to post screenshots when you're done!

Is there a way to see a listing of these when you have a customized theme or this is all just from the person's memory?

I ask because when on the Android Market I can never remember what home app I use - its Go Launcher Ex - and what I have found is some widgets and icons only work on certain home app's.

Many widgets and apps are totally launcher independent - can be used on anything. LPP, Go Launcher, and MIUI all have distinct widgets that will only work on them - they are generally listed as such in the market or on forums like here and xda. Some that will work anywhere include Beautiful Widgets, Fancy Widgets, Minimalistic Text, and thousands more
The term 'theme' can refer to a theme for a specific ROM like MIUI or CM7 - they can apply to icons, notification bars, the style of the dialer, and on and on.
'Theme' can also refer to theme packages for launchers like LPP, ADW Ex, Go Launcher, etc - these generally theme the launcher's widgets, icons, app drawers, and include wallpapers.
It is often also just used as a general term to describe an intricate setup that is not launcher or ROM dependent - like PaulMz's WP7 theme for Android as an example.
The best way to find out what someone is using is by asking them. Hope this helps.

Niteowl doesn't hang in this thread much anymore - you could pm him here or over at xda for specific ?s. I will tell you that he is a photoshop guru, and most likely those are close-ups of his Semi sense icons (also on xda) put on the hexagons, directly applied on the wallpaper, since that's his MO. He most likely just used Desktop VisualizR for shotrcuts/apps over the top of all the elements (use a blank png image as the picture for DVR).
