Root 2.2 ROM I found.

Found a modded 2.2.1 rom that a dev made up for the continuum. ANd he didn't even break the ticker with it, as far as I can tell. Just installed it earlier today. It was my first root, and I didn't have any problems with it at all following his instructions. Very quick, and so far, very stable. I still need to load all my apps on, but I'm liking what I see. Here is the link

Did you use Superoneclick? I may try this for my son's continuum.

first off, if you root and put this rom on your phone DO NOT try to do an OTA update. This is an unofficial version of 2.2 and trying an OTA could do anything from absolutely nothing, to completely bricking you. ROM Manager sees my rom as a fascinate rom, if that tells you anything. The nandroid backup is simply protection in case something gets screwed up during the flashing of this rom.
As for returning to complete stock, the thread I linked over at XDA gives step by step on how to do it, including unrooting your phone in case you need to return it for warranty.

does it do anything to battery life? this is our main concern with this phone. it goes FAST.

25-30% better, from what I see. There is a later rom (the one posted is 2.2.1, and we now have 2.2.2) that is as good. Come to the continuum forums on xda. That's where we are doing all of this.

that would be where? found xdadevelopers, got lost in it.

also, main question: how much does interface differ from the stock one? it's my wife's phone, and lords save me from making her learn a new button:rolleyes:

For anyone else looking
Samsung Continuum - xda-developers
the link to our little community.
As for your question, it's completely the same. Touchwhiz is intact on the latest. There is a version that has been cleaned (all vzw and bing crap gone) and one that is totally stock. The only thing your wife might have to learn are some of the bells and whistles that 2.2.2 has (ie drop down that has a toggle for mobile data, or downloading apps that require 2.2.2, and what not.)

she does not bell, nor whistle. phone, nav, google occasionally. she also won't find anything, if it's not exactly in the same place it was before. unless there's flower on it. completely non-exploratory type.

anyhow, thanks for guidance. I'll get the stuff for her phone and tinker with it later today. there's a lot of do this do that in this. as far as it adds some life to the battery...

I've got some down time, so I'll be on irc most of the day.
webchat.Freenode.net and the channel is #samsung-continuum. If ya have any questions, swing In and ask them before you do anything. And swing in if something gets screwed up. These phones are almost unbrickable, if you know what to do when something bad happens.

noted. I gave my Charge quite some hard time too, going through 2 ROMs in 4 days, and it aced through. not worried about doing something wrong, I have been flashing sat receivers for yrs. more concerened about having clear instructions, as programmers who post them - along with their new ROM - are not the best in keeping it clear and simple. they have tendency to explain based on THEIR level of knowledge.

bump.

we are now with new battery in wife's phone and I am finally so much sick of battery issue that I will flash it today. charging now.

just to make sure:

1. Download the update.zip file and place it on the root of your SD card. It is probably best to do this first before flashing anything.

which means - use USB cable to connect phone to PC and then simply copy paste that pgm somewhere on sd card? or root is a specific folder on it?

2. Place your phone in download mode by removing the battery and holding vol-down while connecting the USB cable.
3. If you want to do a NAND backup before proceeding, then flash just the CWM recovery listed below under PDA in Odin. Otherwise, proceed to step 4.

4. Unzip the ROM file to a tar.md5 file, select this file in Odin under PDA, and flash away!

so we flash with new ROM before update file?

5. Place the update.zip file linked below and boot into recovery by holding both volume buttons and the power button until you see the Samsung logo.

I guess, that means exactly same what #1 says? so what's the right order?

6. Once in recovery, apply update.zip. This is the CWM recovery, so you'll need to use the menu soft-key to select. Once in CWM, the power button is select and the back soft-key is back.

and scroll key is what? volume? I have done rooting on my Charge, volume key scrolls up and down and there was enough scrolling to do.
7. In CWM, make sure you do a wipe/factory reset and wipe cache partition, then reboot.

and this is done how, may I ask?

posting here, I can't post in developer thread at xda.

4. place your phone into download mode by powering off, removing the battery, then holding the volume down button while plugging the phone into your usb port. You should get a yellow box in Odin with the word COM and a couple of numbers. If you don't have this, do not proceed.

connect your phone to your computer using proper cable?
Doesn't it show something on the phone display confirming that phone is in download mode? Little android fella with some sign?

3. extract the Odin.zip contents into a folder where you can get to them (I leave them on my desktop) and open the program. Place the cwm_recovery_test4_adryn.tar in the PDA section of Odin. DO NOT PUT IT IN PHONE SECTION.

is it drag and drop? I just tried to drag and drop into Odin, it is not happening. did not have phone connected, maybe you can with phone connected and recognized.

4. make sure auto reboot is UNCHECKED and click start. It should take less than a minute. Wait until it says 'RESET' before unplugging your phone

isn't there something else that is not supposed to be checked in Odin? PHONE, or BOOTLOAD, do not remember exactly from my last rooting. something that bricks the phone. what is "it"? I'd insert after "start" - Odin will start loading program onto your phone; there will be green progress bar running in box such and such in Odin; wait until load is completed (doesn't it say COMPLETE or something else confirming good load?)

5. Reinstall your battery and reboot into recovery by holding the volume up, down and power button all at once. This will boot you into stock recovery.
6. Using the volume down and menu softkey to select (it won't be lit up. Just tap where it would be - firmly) select sdcard:update.zip This will switch you into CWM recovery.

aren't you already in CWM from step 5? also, I remeber it may be quite a challenge to get to that zip file on sd card by only using volume key. you think a more detailed path will be better?

12, After you get "pass" and "reset", unplug your phone, and reboot into recovery, using the same 3 finger method.
13, apply sdcard:update.zip to get into cwm the same as above, but this time scroll down to 'install .zip from sdcard' once you are in CWM
14., select 'choose zip from sd card' and scroll down to 'EC07.zip', then select it, then yes. This will take a minute or so to install.
15. use your back key to back out to the main CWM menu, then go down to 'advanced' and select it.
16. Select wipe dalvik cache' and yes. this should be pretty quick (Your dalvik cache does not wipe your apps. but it does wipe the interactions your apps have developed with your rom. Wiping this will prevent force close issues.)
17, back out to main CWM menu and select 'wipe cache partition' then yes.

I'd have to be actually doing it, to follow directions.

txwolf, I appreciate your help. and am not a nitpick prick. but I do work with mostly very sick people. people that can not remember anything the very moment they left my office and require crystal clear instructions on anything. hence, I like it all simple, clear, step by step, even better - with pictures. fair enough?

Ok. First off, I don't mind nitpicking... As I THINK i said, this is my first how to, so any contructive input is welcome.
That being said, lets go down the list.
1. I guess I could put 'proper cable' in there. I would assume that the only cable common sense would tell you to use is the one that came with the phone.
2. You are correct. There is an icon of an android (if it can be called that) with a caution sign that says download mode Do not turn off target. And I will update to include that one.
3.Nope. it's not a drag and drop (as I'm sure you figured out). you click the "PDA" button and browse for the file... that one will be updated, as well.
4. The only time anything (as far as phone, csc, bootld, or repartition) checks itself is if you place a file in the corresponding section. You are probably thinking of 'repartition'. If you check that (or, on older versions of odin, it had a habit of checking itself) and you don't have a PIT file, it will brick you. So, that being the case, I didn't bother to instruct the user to uncheck anything else (Odin 1.85 doesn't check repartition on it's own). as for the progress bar reference, that will probably make the cut, as well. But, reset is the LAST thing you see, after 'PASS'. So that is what I instructed to wait for.
5. No, you aren't in CWM when you boot into recovery. Unfortunately (unlike your past phones) we don't have a native CWM. We have an official port from the fascinate. Therefor, you will always have to apply sdcard : update.zip
I'm not sure what you mean by it being a challenge. You do have to hit it with the proper firmness, and in the correct spot. But, I thought I made the fact that you use the menu key to select pretty clear. Maybe you can elaborate on that one.
6. As for the fact that you would have to be reading the tutorial as you go to follow the final steps, I would hope so. I don't expect anyone to memorize all of this, especially on the first run of doing this stuff. If they try, they either have an idetic memory, or are foolish. This was designed to be sitting on you screen as you do the steps, or printed out somewhere. Something to make it easy to follow. The only reason I stated that you should read through it before you started the process is as a good measure. You always read through a step by step before you start any of it to make sure you are clear on what you are doing. Finding out in the middle of it all that you are completely lost and don't understand anything that you are reading is a very bad place to be in.
As for screen shots, I'd have to figure out how to do them on the phone side when I'm in recovery... I'll do some research on it, when i have the time. If i can figure out how to do it (using ADB or something) I will include them.
Do me a favor, and give me a little clearer idea of what you mean by making the instructions on getting into CWM easier to follow, and let me know if you have any more suggestion. Thanks.
