Getting the Razr because its here now?

History shows that when these mobile companies build phones, and then have to repackage software to make it work on an older device...It just doesnt go to smooth alot of the time.

Yes sometimes it goes Fine, but from what I've seen the past 2 years makes me very suspect towards alot.

2 of my EVO's that didnt ship with Froyo were destroyed when the update was released.

My Incredible was Bricked when Froyo was released as well.

Then you have phones like Vzw's Fascinate which never even got an Update to Froyo

It took forever for the ThunderBolt to get Gingerbread, and when it did it was a mess...Just recently they released another Build for it.

To keep going the Charge is still on Froyo...And it's a Droid Branded phone...Where's GingerBread?

Listen in my eyes I buy phones for pretty much that moment, the software that it has on it is the software I expect for it to have on it when I sell it. Yes I go through alot of phones.

I just feel that ICS is going to be a pretty big move in the Android eco system and that some of the last phones of 2011 may not be able to handle all that ICS goodness when the time comes for it to be pushed out. Hey maybe they will, and tide turns and all these phones, buttons and all will be awesome with ICS on them...To be serious, I hope so. I'm a stong supporter of the whole Android movement.

If your in the market for a solid well built phone right this minute, jump on the Razr....

If you want the latest and greatest when it comes to software...There is no better choice then a Nexus branded device...Simple as that!

The phones you referenced above were Samsung and HTC... not Motorola. And, with Samsung as an example, we know that Sammy doesn't have an excellent track record when it comes to updates. Did someone say slow???

Here at Casa Martimus, we've had two Motorola Android smartphones, the OG Droid and the Droid X. Both have weathered updates without significant issue. Now that's not to say that there won't be issues when performing updates... sometimes the unexpected can happen! But Motorola has a pretty good team of developers and their updates do typically work. They may not fix all of the bugs but their updates tend to work...

Back to the original question Sean asked, I'm getting a new phone because right now is when my DX has bitten the dust. I got my DX right after my previous phone died. If my DX had not died, I wouldn't even be looking. The call quality is great, battery life manageable, web browsing fine, movie watching and music playing all fine. I also have managed to live somehow with the camera and take some damn good shots. If my phone had died 3 months ago, I would have looked at the Charge or bionic.

I don't see this round of releases as any different than the last, or next round of "next best thing". As for which one will be tech obsolete first? Yes. All of the above. But will a quad or quint core phone really make those screen flips just AWESOMER than any dual core could?! I highly doubt it. And wasn't the DX 2 an upgrade to the X? It had twice the cores, so it must have rocked. Not.

One other thing I don't understand is why ck thinks the Gnex its such an utter piece of garbage though.

If there's a challenge it'll probably be with integration testing. While it's true that Google will be doing the update development, Sammy will most likely still be responsible for the actual integration with the Nexus hardware.

I can see me doing what I did with my PC: I didnt jump on the quad core bandwagon. I really didnt jump on the dual core one either. I will probably get my first quad core PC next year sometime. I got my first dual core PC in 2008. Its a lil different with phones tho since we cant upgrade the hardware ourselves. But I can see my passing on a quad core phone and sticking with dual core....maybe....lol

Sean I saw you mention Aaron from phonedog's reviews being pretty good and I agree. Not sure if its been posted in another thread yet but he has a RAZR unboxing video up. He takes a photo etc. too. Also has a video sample of the 1080p HD video camera up. Looked pretty good to me but a lot of detail seemed to get lost at a distance. Photo he took seemed to focus and shoot fast though.

I stopped into a store this evening to check out the RAZR after spending the last two nights studying up on it.

I'm not buying one now.

In my opinion the display was pretty crappy. I'm sure that I will probably regret it once ICS is out and my X2 is left behind but I just couldn't give up the X2 display for this thing right now. It literally looked cloudy sky gray to me. I made sure it was ramped all the way up but side beside the RAZR was just dim with dreary whites like an old sock. I even went over to another one to see if it was any different but it was just the same.

Yes sir...He's awesome! Fairly honest and never really leans towards any one device or manufacturer ...Good Dude.

And I agree that shot he took of the text on the paper was pretty impressive.

That's not good news...But Amoled whites are usually a little on the bluish/grey side.
Its a trade off for the Deep Blacks that are present on the display.

That reminds me of another issue that I noticed. While using it in the auto dim mode the level it self adjusted to seemed far too dark to me. Images seemed faded and far too "underexposed" if that makes any sense. I'm sure I could get used to it but really got my attention more than I had expected. I'm usually all about getting the latest and greatest even if it means putting up with a few quirks but I walked away from this one feeling like I had something superior with my X2.

Now, the thickness, smoothness and overall user experience was outstanding. I just can't understand why they didn't concentrate more on the display but I assume they were working toward the absolute best battery performance possible.

Hey everyone Droid Virgin here, but highly computer literate (Have degrees, is my livelihood, yada yada). I've been reading up the last year, notably since August when I became eligible to upgrade. Thought I'd give a little perspective from a "Non-Smartphone" guy.

I got a chance to check out the RAZR today. HANDS DOWN most impressive phone I've ever held. Snappy, bright screen, fast browsing, easy to text, and all the other configuration that is android. I would be VERY happy with this phone. It's no Bionic which took all of 30 seconds to NOT be impressed! Did I mention the phone actually qualifies for the word beautiful? All while being light and solid at the same time. I actually LIKE the hump at the top. Helps keep the phone from slipping out of my hand and gives it something to rest on at the top of it.

I think the RAZR is going to have GREAT support. Here's a simple reason why:
1.) Both Verizon and Motorola are putting their necks out with branding. It's not going to get left behind. I'm in no rush to get ICS. They've promised two major updates. So that's at least ICS, and probably Jellybean. Even if it's just a solid ICS, I think that will be enough.

2.) They're going to sell a HUGE amount of these. That means that even outside of official updates, there's going to be a LOT out there for this phone. It's going to get milked to the last drop.

3.) With the given hardware, what app is it not going to be able to run in the next 2 years? I mean seriously? The only thing I can think of is some crazy game, and I'm NOT a gamer. At least not on a smartphone!

If the Nexus is going to get pushed back, I'll just get the RAZR. It's such an upgrade from my dumbphone it's going to take awhile for me to max it out to where I'm really bored with it. I mean honestly, IT'S A PHONE PEOPLE! There's only so much I could be bothered with to do on it that my other devices wouldn't piss all over it for.

With technology, if you expect any device to be perfect with nothing to nitpick about, you're going to be sorely disappointed! I expect there will still be things about the RAZR that will be "Less than perfect". I don't expect it to compete with a $300+ standalone camera. I don't see why anyone else would!

I AM "one of those guys" that actually keeps the same phone for 2 years unless I break it. I'm sure once I get into it, maybe even get hooked. Though with a quad core laptop w/12gb of RAM running at 3+GHZ, why would I bother with my phone? Only if my laptop wasn't available. I'm sure this is different for guys with long bus or subway rides perhaps, but I'm not one of them.

With talk already starting about quad core phones, there's no reason to keep waiting at this point. It's a slippery slope to eight core, etc... The software has to catch up to the hardware usually and Android IMO will be no different. Dual core is relatively new AFAIK, and until it takes full advantage of that dual core, quad cores will simply be for bragging rights. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it sure worked out that way for PCs! Plus IMO you can only sit on the fence for so long, because in the meantime what are you doing? Still using your crappy old phone! Decide when the hardware choices have become "Good enough", commit and move on. Based on my experience in technology and following the Android Market for 6 months, I feel the RAZR marks the start of that time.
