Using phone to connect to home wifi

Hi guys, I need to know if using my phone to connect to my home wifi is free? First of all, I have no data plan, just the basic and I heard from my friend that once I connect to my home wifi from my phone, I won't be billed for that as I'm using my home internet to access. Is that true?

One more thing is that, if I use my phone to connect to any free wifi outside, I won't be billed for that when I use it to access the internet or watch youtube right?

Thanks in advance!

Yep, if you're connected to a WiFi network, you won't be charged for data. Just to be sure you're not billed for anything, you can turn mobile data off. It's normally located in Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks, but it might differ slightly on some handsets.

Oh I see. So as long as the wifi provided is free, like my school network, I can just connect to it and surf the net, go Facebook and I won't be billed, am I correct to say that?

correct.

if the wifi provided is not free, you typically can't even use it without entering in a password, which they provide you once you've paid. Even then, that wifi has nothing to do with your carrier. This is why some tablets are "wifi-only." You buy the device, and you are responsible for finding your way onto the internet via wifi. Carrier is out of the picture.

So like another poster said, to be safe, disable your phone's mobile data radio, and turn on wifi. You won't ever be charged for data by your carrier.
