kernels (speedmod) and CWM versions

Many kernels (eg Siyah, Ninph) come with CWM bundled.
I've been on Siyah 2.2? for the last few days which comes bundled with CWM 5. This now seems to be pretty stable and I want it to keep.
Trouble is, CWM backups do not seem compatible between versions, so if I wanted to put another kernel on, how would I then keep this kernel and JUST put CWM5 back on top?
Is there a .zip file just for CWM5 I could flash perhaps?

Also, what link do you people on speedmod kernel use to download the latest? I cant seem to find a definite xda thread for it. There seem to be several so not sure which to use. Is there a .zip file for the latest speedmod?

I wouldnt mind giving Speedmod a go as i've heard many good comments on it off different people, but like I said, I would like to try this with CWM5.

Any ideas if there is a speedmod+BLN in the pipeline? This is the one thing that has put me off this kernel up to now.

[KERNEL] SpeedMod SGS2 [K2-16 Update3 CWM4 CIFS ROOT] - xda-developers

this is the speedmod page.

latest version is 17test, it's on here. sorry cannot post direct link to zip file as my PC at work seems to block a lot of xda pages

as is obvious, am quite a fan of speedmod. doesn't have all the bells and whistles but saw a definite speed-up of my phone (and no lag!) with it. you just cant play around with governers and tegraks dual core app. fab battery too. doen't get the benchmark scores of siyah, but still get 6100. ironass talks about the "feel" of a kernel, and this one cetrtainly "feels" nice!

hardcore (the dev) will never add BLN - his "mission statment" is to keep it as pure as possible, and not to add mods which can cause battery drain - apparently BLN can do this (??never did for me). that's why it took me so long to try (and why i'm desperate to get siyah working!)

i don't really understand all this CWM business. personally have never had any issues switching between CWM versions and compatability - over the last few days i've probably done more switching between siyah/lulz/speedmod to last 6 months - but each time everything seemed to remain compatible EXCEPT with lulz, which put CWM version 3 on ??? this really had compatability issues.

surely it would go against your principles hawker not to at least try speedmod!!!

I'm downloading it as i type in my true tradition butty!
:)

comes with CWM4.0.1.5 (no back button support)
bootanimation is lost.
max 1200 in setcpu
no bln
takes slightly longer than Siyah to boot up (but only by a couple of seconds)

it certainly "feels" on a par with Siyah2.2. Homescreens+app drawer are lag free and snappy (but so was Siyah for me)

As I have no problems with Siyah I guess shall be going back to it, but its definitely worth considering. I might put it back on later to assess battery drain overnight....

@steslatt
I've certainly had cross-version issues with CWM
None of my v5 backups can be restored if i am currently on v4, and if I remember correctly, the same goes the other way too. To restore, I have to flash the relevant kernel before hand
