Battery Experiences - POST HERE!

10+ hours of solid usage. 20%. 100% screen brightness, 4G all day etc. Smart actions kicked in at 20% and had no problem making it home. Noticed phone charges very fast from wall outlet (less than an hour).

That being said i am near chicago (very strong 4G and reception area) so my phone was always full bar and never had to search for a 4G signal (biggest battery drainers imo).

Overall so far this phone beats the crap out of my rooted droid charge battery life.

This info was true in Nickel cadmium batteries but does not necessarily apply to Lithium based batteries.

Lithium based batteries are ready at birth and do not need priming, formatting or calibrating. There are those who believe that battery performance increases after a couple of cycles but I'm not sure I believe that since it contradicts the science in the way the battery works.

Any increase in battery performance after a few charge cycles is likely the battery meter being calibrated enabling the phone to more accurately read the battery's charge. Coupled with the "newness" factor being gone after a few days, phone usage tends to be a bit less, therefore battery life appears to increase.

I'm far from an expert but like many here on AF, I've owned many smartphones and digital audio players in the past 9 years or so. In that time I've done a fair amount of useful battery research and I hope someone may find this information useful.

My usual battery charging practices...

Upon taking the phone out of the box, I plug it straight into the charger. I try to never use the phone while it is charging since (this is my belief but has not been proven true) the battery charges more efficiently this way. This can be difficult with a new toy. :)

Unplug phone from the charger at 100% and discharge completely. Replug phone and charge up to 100% without any phone usage.

Battery meter should now be calibrated to read the battery when at full charge/complete discharge.

The phone may now be used normally.

Partial charges and discharges are the best way to prolong the life span of Lithium-ion batteries. However, not charging a battery fully and discharging it a small amount does not seem practical for obvious reasons.

The more you plug your phone up to charge the less accurate the battery meter becomes. To remedy this a full discharge should be done once every 1-3 months in order to recalibrate the battery meter.

This is perhaps the most important piece of info to remember... Full discharges should be kept to a minimum since the higher the depth of discharge (DoD) the more it stresses the battery, therefore decreasing it's life span.

As far as day to day use, the less depth of discharge the better. For example, draining your battery from 100-0% everyday will shorten it's life span immensely and is estimated to give you about 500 charge cycles. On the other hand, draining your battery from 100-25% everyday would allow you twice the amount of charge cycles. 100-50% will give about 2000 cycles, and so on...

About charge cycles...

A charge cycle means using about 80% the battery's power. So using and recharging 80% of the battery capacity equals one full charge cycle.

It is possible for charge cycles to take up to several days. For example, you discharge your phone from 100-60% on day one, then recharge it fully. On day two, you discharge it from 100-60% then recharge fully once again. This would equal one charge cycle.

Well, I think I'll be sending this back. I'll probably have to take around a 20% hit on the price, so I'll probably end up getting a Galaxy S2. The battery on this has been nothing short of awful so far. Charged it last night, unplugged it at 1am, been to the gym this morning for a couple of hours, and it's dead. Completely gone, no juice whatsoever.

This is worse than my Desire HD, and I just don't understand it with such a big battery. :(

Have you really had the phone long enough to assess battery life?

Have you checked what is draining it? Maybe there is an app that does that and only needs to be set up properly?

Have you tried setting Smart Actions to prevent battery draining?

I reset the phone back to default, with no apps that I installed, tried all the different Smart Actions settings, It's whenever I use the screen.. So basically anytime It's doing it's job, the battery just plummets.

To test it, I set my Desire HD up exactly the same, and it had 35% battery left, while this was dead.

I know it's early, but It's useless if it can't last a work shift, and it's not even close. Last about 2/3 with just medium use. I also only have 7 days from recieving it to return it (I got it on Wednesday).

Getting around 13 hours on my razr battery(yes 4g)....sorry about your luck but I'd say you have it set up incorrectly, this battery has been the best I've ever had so far!

Set up incorrectly? He said he reset his phone to the factory settings....I'm experiencing horrible battery life too. Full charged over night, woke up, unplugged phone. Used it for about 10 minutes checking email, installed an app, read the news...put it down.

So, used it for 10 minutes, set it down. An hour later I check the phone, it's already down to 85% battery...that seems excessive drain.

I'm coming from an iPhone and I gotta say, as much as I hated the iPhone the battery was never an issue.

Everyone keeps saying "turn off the 4g" to improve battery life....What's the point of having it if we have to turn it off to get good battery life? (btw, i have 4g in my area) I really love this phone but if I have to turn off a bunch of it's features (ie: lower screen brightness, turn off 4g, etc) then it's like the features don't exist...

frustrated.......:(

Thus the main reason Apple said "no" to current 4G for VZW. The good news about VZW 4G is it is very fast and has good range and penetration. The negative is the wave signature that affords such great characteristics for signal also requires a bear of a radio chip. 45nm is too much resistance in silicon for the results to be good for battery life.

Mid next year, we should see devices with 28nm LTE radio chips. This will also probably be near when we see the first iPhone with 4G too.

The Razr has a 4430 running at 1.2ghz, LTE and a 4.3" display. Factor in all the social apps and people using the device a lot more when first getting it- of course it will have rough battery life at first for some. Still, this will not stop the, "My battery lasted 17 hours with HEAVY use!". Usage is in the mind of the beholder ;)

I too am getting poor battery life... charged it full and then unplugged and went to bed (smart action turns off 3g/4g and keeps wifi on which also shuts off when screens off) and when i woke up 9hrs later i was at 70% got my emails check Facebook and down to 40%. i might have a bad battery possibly but this doesn't seem right. I am charging now going to check 3g battery life but i shouldn't have to shut 4g off since thats why i wanted the phone, i also get good service here in mass, but we will see how it fares today. 33% of my battery (the most) was taking by android os while sleeping though so i could just have a draining phone (i did install go launcher for different themes maybe this is partial reason)


hmmm other then that i absolutely love this phone compared to the old droidx

There's only a few things that most people should understand about modern lithium ion based batteries:

1. The capacity of the battery, typically in milliamps.

2. The charging circuit, if the battery is 1800, does it only allow 1750? People like to "bump charge" to sometimes get closer to capacity.

3. Phone's display of the battery. May not be accurate for a few weeks. It's software that guesses what the real condition of the battery actually is. This is where a lot of people confuse "conditioning of older nicad batteries".

4. Don't let your battery drain all the way to 0, this could affect 1.

I'd have to be in the consensus here that I was a little bit worried about my phone when I first started using it, ON THE FACTORY charge. It didn't last very long at all.

But after a couple of charge cycles on it, getting it down into the 10-15% range, it's lasting a lot longer. All of mine is done without 4G, since I don't have that in my area.

My RAZR makes it about as long as my OG Droid did, so I figure that's OK. I suspect that the battery will get even a little bit better after a few more charge cycles.

All-in-all, I've been pleasantly surprised with it so far. Will I be as happy when it's 2 years old? I guess that time will tell...
