Is the Rezound your first 4G phone? Get in here

I posted up in the Razr forum yesterday, so I should probably pose the same poll/how-to section for the Rezound gang. 4G is a little different than just 3G so you'll probably notice some things on the Rezound that might cause you to go screaming at Verizon CS.

My first tip for new owners of this phone that have never owned a 4G phone is to check the Verizon 4G map to see if you're in a good 4G area. 4G LTE Network | Verizon Wireless

If you're not and you notice bouncing around of 4G/3G/1X then it sounds like the problem that they experience with the Thunderbolt upon launch (and apparently the problem they're now seeing over on the Razr forum). The best way to avoid it bouncing around is to disable 4G if you aren't in a 4G area to avoid the signal bounce as well as poor battery performance (your phone will continue to search for a 4G signal and you will get diminished battery performance.

I'm not sure if the Rezound has the 4G on/off toggle so what you can do is go to your phone, type in *#*#4636#*#* and it'll bring you to a new menu with different options. You'll go into "Phone" and then you can scroll down and see a drop down menu that will allow you to change from different networks. You'll want to remove 4G LTE (should be the default setting) and move it to CDMA (Auto). That should prevent the bouncing around. Again, you may have this option available to you in the Settings but I know the Thunderbolt didn't have that option, and there are other options in that "secret" menu.

I can't think of any other 4G tips off the top of my head, but I'm sure we'll get more as everyone gets more comfortable with their Rezound.

There is an easier way to toggle 4G on/off instead of dialing *#*#4636#*#*. There are apps in the market that basically auto dials *#*#4636#*#*. The one I used when I had the Tbolt is called PhoneInfo. I do recall seeing that there were others though. Not a biggie since they both accomplish the same thing, but with the app, you don't have to remember the dialing string.

The other thing I would mention on turning off 4G is that for most operations, there will be a minimal of difference using 3G vs. 4G. Like for emails (unless there is a very large attatchment) they'll come through quickly on either. So if you're a lil OCD on battery life, you may want to switch off 4G when it's not really needed. Chime in Goat if that sounds right.

Something else you might not know about 4G phones is that you no longer dial *228 to activate your phone or update your roaming. The phone auto updates the preferred roaming list (PRL) on 4G phones. As far as activating your phone, my Tbolt came with a sheet that had instructions to activate it by calling a toll free number. This should only be needed the first time you get a 4G phone. After that you simply move your LTE SIM card from your old phone to another. The only hitch there is there seems to be a movement to smaller SIM cards. The Samsung Stratosphere, G-Nexus, & Moto Razr have micro-SIMs, and I just read yesterday about nano-SIMs. But when switching from one phone to another where both have the same type of LTE SIM cards, you only need to remove it from the old one and install it in the new one.

Speaking of 4G, Mobiletechreview posted that the Rezound has the best and most stable reception of any current 4G device and compared the Bionic and Razr. The reviewer owns a Bionic and said that places where the Bionic and Razr does not pick up 4G well or bounce with 3G are solid with the Rezound.

The negative is the Bionic and Razr have better call quality.

If this is true then this will definitely make my decision for me. As it stands now, my Thunderbolt won't even pick up 4G at my house but as soon as I step outside, instant 4G. I'm thinking it's probably has to do with the fact that this house is wired differently than newer homes (built back when Aluminum was thought to be good for wiring the home) so it poses some interference issues.

So the Rezound has its own 4G/3G toggle app? That's good. I always hated downloading extra apps if I didn't have to. Although I think some people are the exact opposite. Those Amazon freebie apps are slightly addictive and turn people into App hoarders.

Looks like you may be set, since that is a similar issue the reviewer describes with consistent results using the Rezound. The only thing odd with the review is she chooses the least effective test for display, but I took care of that for myself anyway and impressed.

I was actually a tad disappointed with the display from the review. It looked possibly a bit washed out and it seemed there was more reflection on the glass than the RAZR had. Also, the RAZR display didn't look like the whites were greyish and it looked like the RAZR had less reflection than the other two phones. Maybe it was just camera angle or something but that was my take. I guess until I can compare IN PERSON the phones side by side I can't make a bonafide decision as to which display fits my fancy the best.

You should get the commission if I decide to purchase the Rezound since I think you've probably helped me re-consider against the Razr.

What just occurred to me as well is that my Laptop has red accents so it would be a match with the phone.

The biggest problem with these reviews is that you'll have to take into account the medium that they're being shot in. Your best bet is in person as you mentioned.

I think I could be one of the pickiest people in the forms here. The display is amazing and Tx is correct about being careful using the comparison used.

Wait until Monday and then check it out yourself.

Im sure that will be the case, just that I definitely noticed that the RAZR display didn't seem to have as much reflection. Monday will be a day of decisions, hopefully.

I had a Qosmio 4 years ago (black & piano white). Great laptop and then one day it just stopped working, no warning or anything. Which sucked because it was one of my fav laptops. Toshiba said it wasn't worth fixing so I'm lucky I had BB protection on it. Got me a nice little Asus since they didn't carry any Qosmio models at the time. I looked at one like yours awhile ago, but since the Asus is still going I can't justify switching again. I only do that for phones.;):D

I love this thing, Bluray player, 1080p display, i7 processor, 6 GB RAM, and an SSD HD. The only thing I hate is I bought it for school last semester and it was a PITA to carry around (12 lbs).

Yeah mine was nowhere near specced out as that. LightScribe DVD player, WVGA dispay, AMD Athlon dual core, 2 GB RAM, and 5400rpm 250 GB hard drive (not SSD). Mine was around 8 lbs. My Asus is a little lighter at 6.5 lbs, but they're still a lot to lug around.

If either of you guys have the chance to get an SSD drive, I highly recommend it, especially with how cheap they're getting (saw a 120 GB for under $140 on Newegg). At the end of some of my classes, everyone would start to shut down their laptops, I'd be the first out the door cause of the faster shutdown and boot up times.

I spent last night loading my music and movies and a few other things that were on my old phone I wanted on this one. Definitely am asking for a 32gig card for Christmas!!

I do have a question though. I can not see where to turn 4g on or off if there is such a thing. On Friday, it was in 4g, but now it is only in 3g. I'm not sure if it is something I inadvertantly did or if the 4g signal in my home just isn't good. I'm not concerned about only being in 3g because it is still quite quick. But if I somehow turned 4g off, I'd like to know how to turn it back on! Thanks!

Check under Settings>Network> If there's no LTE switch there then I'd go with the old *#*#4636#*#* and it'll open up a new menu for you. Then click on "Phone Information" but you can also check other options there if you want to see stuff like battery life, etc.

Just so I'm understanding this correctly, when I go into Network Settings>Network Mode I can switch between LTE/CDMA or CDMA Only.

Selecting CDMA only essentially TURNS OFF 4g??

Thanks <sorry if I sound stupid LOL>

Yeah CDMA only is 3G. If you click CDMA + LTE that's 4G/3G. If you see the phone bounce around a lot then I'd stick to CDMA only because it won't drain the battery so much.

So you go to Mobile Network<Network Mode to switch it? I just noticed that the current rom I'm on has the LTE/CDMA switch. I'm so used to *#*#46... that I don't even look for the switch elsewhere.

How are you enjoying your phone? Feel free to start a new thread with a review! :D

It is

Settings>Wireless&Networks>Mobile Networks>Network Mode

I love the phone, but I don't feel knowledgable enough to post a review! LOL

Don't sell yourself short. You've got much more knowledge than any of us that don't even have the phone yet.

How fast does the GPS lock on the unit? That was an initial problem with the Thunderbolt, it would take a good minute for the GPS signal to show where you were on the map.

I agree with Txg, hell people popping in here with little or no knowledge will probably appreciate your thoughts/feelings way more than some of those stuffy review vids.....

Try to post you thoughts in an applicable thread though. :)

I like the idea of a tip thread with 4g tips but only if we can stay mostly on topic. :)
