divx yet?!?!?!

So I just wanted to know if anyone has found a player that can handle dvix/xvid yet. I would have thought with all the "rooting" going on that a media player that plays divx/xvid would have shown it's face by now.

P.S. I know about yxflash and it doesn't seem to be the answer.

Honestly just a little surprised that with all the talk about "rooting" that there has not been one solution to the divx/xvid playback issue. I can honestly care less about a prettier photo and video gallery/player or multitouch capabilities or ANIMATED BACKGROUNDS. Who cares about these petty aesthetics, I thought that stuff was for the iphone? More home screens and a little, emphasis on LITTLE, more speed is nice, but still not even necessary. The Droid is one of the fastest phones on the market even when not rooted and 2/3 of my apps I really don't even use. It is a much larger inconvenience to have to transcode for an hour every dixv/xvid (which is an incredibly popular codec) movie I have to mp4. My grandma's computer from 12 years ago can play back these files.

If I could make one suggestion to the people rooting, figure out why the moment can run divx/xvid but the "beastly" Droid can not. Droid doesn't, even when rooted.

YX Flash player will do it. I've only tested the free version (2 mins playback) and on the Eris, it was pretty bad, but on my Droid it was actually pretty good. I'm probably going to buy the full app soon...

haha, its probably a licence issue! maybe the people who root don't care about video play back as much as you. email one of them! gah people are sooo lame sometimes! DROID DOESN'T! i am sick of that! keep waiting! 4 freaking months people! not 3 years! droid will and does day to day! when the droid has been out ONE YEAR and still doesn't do avi, complain then, not now

Only point I'm trying to make is that it surprised me that the people spending time rooting the Droid are concerned with things such as the ones I listed above. I would think video playback, of one of the most popular formats, would be higher on the list than animated backgrounds or a cuter photo gallery. That stuff really didn't improve much or add much more functionality, rather it just make the phone more attractive. Which like I said above, seems to be more an iPhone hang up than a Droid one.

Who would I need to e-mail to ask this question?

I ve been wondering about that too ever since android was announced

As far as i know only the Galaxy spica/portal supports divx and i dont even know if its out yet somewhere.Even so its a low end "tattoo class" phone running 1.5!!

But people , seriously, everybody is so proud about android being open source and having an unrestricted market but when are we gonna reap the rewards ? Why doesnt divx make a player or a codec and give it away on the market (or even sell it !!! i d gladly pay even 20 bucks for it !).Or maybe someone can hack it or something (i am not an expert) And dont even get me started on alternative browsers and all that.Wheres opera mobile and fennec ? (yes yes i ve read the news but i ll believe it when i see it)

Seriously , i am not buying an android phone just because of that (yet)

The guys that are doing hacks are not interested in video playback. We view video playback just exactly the same way you view our quest for speed. What you're asking for has not been done in a big way because there aren't enough customers to support it.

Like was said earlier, the Droid has been out for 4 months, iPhone has been out 4 years, Winmo has been out since anvils were made out of rock. Give the platform some time and all will be fine.

Wow it seems you re right.Strangely i cant find alot of info about it but it seems to be working well.Its also about 20 bucks !Now if somehow i can make sure it plays all files regardless of res encoder etc then we might have a deal...Too bad where i live i can only get the hero cause it looks old now with the milestone and the nexus one out already

YXFlash poorly plays everything, that is why it has so many horrible reviews and I suppose you are correct, the rooters are not concerned with playback, rather speed. This to me doesn't make sense, for example, I am a professional video editor and own both a PC and a laptop. I need the speed on the PC because I have tasks such as video editing/rendering to perform. I also at one time can have highly processor/ram/video card intensive programs all running at one time (ie. after effects, photoshop, vegas pro 9, cineform, etc.).

My point being...I do not expect or need my laptop to do all this. I expect to do light editing, browsing and data processing on the go, nothing to serious. I expect my cell phone to do even less than my laptop, but at the least play my videos. I can care less how fluid my screens slides left to right or that my app to make fart noises opens up a second slower than instant.

But you are correct, my priorities are in the wrong place and I'll just wait till someone decides that simple video playback may be a worthy undertaking.

Well, thanks for seeing the humor in my "type slow" comment. I did try to turn on the "Sarcasm Font" before typing that, but I couldn't find it.

It's not that your priorities are misplaced, they seem perfectly on target for your needs/wishes/wants. And as more and more Droids/Android Phones are out there, the more likely someone will fill your need. As I read on another thread somewhere, "There's billions and billions of iphones out there and only a million Droids". Paraphrasing the world famous and genuine genius (don't believe it? just ask him) Kevin Costner, "Buy the Droids and they will come (Developers)".

Good luck with getting what you need. BTW, you know a lot of developers hang out at allroid. You may want to go over there and post on a request thread.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll see if I can spread the word over there. I also agree, the more owners, the more programmers, the more possibilities. I just thought this would have been one of the first easy puzzles to crack, but the wait continues.

It has nothing to do with Speed , or Quality , or sales , or the phones horsepower.

There have been weak as balls handhelds running divx/xvid at very high quality for about 6 years now. Every android phone has the horse power to run it.

Android OS has severely restricted and limited its media APIs to devs.

This is the single reason why there is no Equalizer , No added codec playback. Thats it. No more no less.a2


The apps like AudioEQ , and YX flash are terrible hacks and workarounds these blocks.

Iphone/WebOS/Android have for whatever reason made it hard for A/V development and apps. ((actually we know why apple does it but whatever)).

In anycase to fast forward , Divx playback is coming to HTC bravo (rumored spec). So on some level they've found an official way to do it on at least one phone.

The guys from CorePlayer have stated publicly(twitter) they are working together with the Google team to improve and add features to future Android releases. Take that however youd like.

Anyone looking for a good Divx/Xvid player or an advanced AV options is shit out of luck until something changes. But unlike Apple Google doesnt have a vested interest in blocking these things from happening (that we know of).

I don't know about all that...Although I currently only have the demo (2 minute version), YXflash played 3 out of 4 xvids I tried very well. The last one was a larger encode and it did struggle a bit. The other 3 which where TV episodes worked great and smooth. And that was at 550 Mhz. Can't wait to give the full version a try at 950 Mhz. I think I'll grab it next pay day...

That will be nice when it come outs. Divx seems to be one of the best compression methods out. They are able to significantly size vids down without too much loss of quality..
