Amazon is worse than Apple when it comes to shafting their customers.

Just go look at the history of the kindle sku updates. Wait 3-4 months and they will put out a much better one for the same price or $50 more.

I expect at least two new Kindles next year before Summer. :)

Original Kindle - Nov 2007
Kindle 2 - February 2009
Kindle DX - May 2009
Kindle DX Graphite (same as DX, just grey) July 2010
Kindle 3 (now called Kindle Keyboard) - Also July 2010
Kindle Fire and Kindle Touches - September 2011.

So it looks like they release a new Kindle every year since 2009. How is this different than Apple or any other OEM? It was nearly a year and a half between the Kindle 2 and the Kindle 3.

Not really sure what your point is.
You're talking about different products. The Kindle DX isn't just the next version of the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX graphite is a color change and it came out 14 months after the original DC. The Kindle 3 which was the successor to the Kindle 2 came out 17 months later.

Fine just mark this post and check back around March for the new Kindle Fire. ;)

It that happened it would be a huge change from how Amazon normally does things. The one year (or more) product cycle has kind of become standard in the tech world. I would be willing to bet you $100 that there is no new Kindle until late next year. A 4 month product cycle would be extremely short for Amazon. Why do you think they're going to cut their typical product cycle in half?

There is supposed to be another one with a larger screen coming soon. But that doesn't replace the current Fire just as there were a couple different e-ink Kindles all available at the same time.

Seems to me to be extremely short indeed , especially since they reportedly were in a rush for the Fire to begin with which is why they outsourced the hardware.

Four months, they would need to be almost done with it now to go through the test process , etc. They would not even have time to incorporate any changes from feedback (or issues) from the initial Fire, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I want a tablet now. I don't feel like waiting 4 months hoping that Amazon releases a marginally better tablet.

You are not going to get a much better tablet for the price in 4 months just based on the costs of components. There will probably be a 10 inch tablet for $299 but I won't expect an upgrade for the 7 inch model.

And when does having short product cycles are considered shafting the customer? There is always something better around the corner.

I wouldn't consider a 10" Fire an upgrade over the 7" Fire any more than the DX is an upgrade over the Kindle 2 myself. Unless they're going to retire the 7" Fire in 4 months. I don't see that happening at all. The 7" is backordered already. They're selling like hotcakes and Christmas is around the corner. Four months from now, they'll know if the thing is going to be a flash in the pan or a legit best seller. If the former, then we may not see another one. If the latter, then I think we could see a 10" version in the late summer or fall.

I'm with you - I don't consider a 10" model an "upgrade". I like the 7" size: if it had been 10", I wouldn't have bought it. The 7" tab fits in my coat pocket; 10" doesn't.

The Kindle 2 and DX are different sizes. Kind of like a tablet manufacturer offering two different sizes of a tablet. The DX wasn't released to replace the Kindle 2, but for the audience that wanted a Kindle with a larger screen. Does it make more sense for Amazon to release their normal sized Kindle one year, then the larger DX a year later, or have two that cater to different audiences at the same time?

Actually you said

For the record, the DX was ~150 bucks more than the launch price of the Kindle 2.

Again I said "better" not successor. Those words mean two totally different things.
Successor: one that follows; especially: one who succeeds to a throne, title, estate, or office
Better: improved in accuracy or performance <building a better engine>

Let me put it in simple terms...There will be a new Kindel SKU in 4 months.

But you also said 50 dollars more, and then tried to use the DX to prove your point. But the DX was not 50 dollars more.

The DX is not better than the Kindle 2. It's identical. The only difference is the size.

Why would you care? The kindle is an ereader. If there were a new fire tablet in 4 months someone might care but wtf? It was $199 - get the new one if you want it. Or don't. If your complaint is they release too many new models I must say that's a pretty thin hair to be splitting.

That's completely irrelevant if it's not something that anyone is going to jump ship for. If the come out with an identical model 4 months from now, but it's white it'll be a different SKU. How many people are going to abandon the black Fire in order to buy the white one? None. Ok, you might have a few nutcases who are fanboys and have to have both, but they are the small, small majority. They are not going to put out an upgraded/updated model in four months. I'll put $100 to your favorite charity on the line here.
