so how do i get this app to work. I just rooted with the sholes mod updater rom. I plugged my phone into the computer with the USB cord and selected mount and ran the app and hit the big green wifi icon to connect. What else do i need to do? or if anyone has got links to how to get this app to work that would be great too.

Oh and also when i connect the USB cord, on the notification bar and triangle with an (!) mark shows up and talks about some debugging stuff. What is that? does that have something to do with the wifi?

Rep for who ever helps me get this thing to work.

thanks.

your at the easy part now.

once you hit start tethering, you have just setup an unsecured wireless network. the default SSID is androidtether. if you have a laptop you can connect right away.

i suggest you go into the settings, change the SSID to something else, and setup the WEP key for security so that only you or whoever you give the WEP key to can connect.

thats it.

So cool...just installed the wifi tether APK (from the Simply Stunning thread over at alldroid) over the Bugless Beauty ROM, and am posting this over wifi tether from my PC.

:D

Responsiveness is amazing...feels like I'm still on my home network.

I know what you mean, I'm at work wirelessly tethering from my Droid to my Vaio and it is just as smooth as the company network I would normally be borrowing. I have heard that Big Red wont notice, but I'm just gonna stay on for a little bit to find out on my next bill.

But I was going to ask you to use it heavily for a few days and let me know what happens! ;)

I won't have to use it too much, but really like knowing that I have it as an option.

wait, r guys saying Verizon chargers fees for tethering?

normally cell phone providers do. there's currently no tethering plan for the droid right now. but they can start charging you if you start downloading big files. surfing the web should be ok. i'm averaging about 2-3G a month on tethering with no problems from verizon. just don't download torrent stuff.

The "Wireless Tether for Root Users" app basically makes your phone emulate a wireless router. It "shares" the Droid's internet connection over the Droid's WIFI radio. You do not need to have a WIFI signal first, since the app "creates" the signal for your WIFI-enabled computer to read from. You do however need a decent 3G signal for a stable and fast connection. If you tether on a 1X signal, you might as well be on dial-up:(

Simply start the the tethering app on the phone, and look for the "AndroidTether" SSID with your computer to connect to, just like you would with your home WIFI network or public hotspot..or your neighbor's router when the cable company shuts your internet off:p.

And, as suggested, do not start a whole bunch of huge downloads while tethered, unless you like the idea of being caught..

EDIT: You *can* connect the USB cable to your computer to power the Droid so as not to kill your battery while tethering(it is a battery hog). Also, make sure your Droid's screen is off or at least very dim while doing this, or your battery sill still drain slowly. BUT, the USB cable will NOT carry the internet connection using this app.

Is there a step-by-step how-to posted somewhere? I can't find it and would love to add this... but am clueless how to proceed. Thanks
As far as I know, it's included in many custom roms. Don't know if it's available on the side, or as an add-on to any other rom. I'm on Bugless Beast 0.8 and it's available.
Anyone use this for a decent amount of time? Anyone get caught with high-dollar VZW bill charges? I just watched about 30 seconds of a youtube video on my computer while tethered to my phone. I think it said it dowloaded like 3 MB. I turned it off right away.
