Help Best smart dialer

comming from windows Im way used to being able to use t9 dialing to dial names. for instance I dial 263 and it begins to pull up the name andrea. i cant find out how to turn it on on the moment and I know there are other dialer out there. anyone find one they really like? one that works well and doesn't slow the phone down?

i played with an app (on the android developers contest 2 app) thats concept was really neat; but couldn't communicate with our phonebook... i think it was called tap dialer - where you put a few people in the list and you tapped to get to their number... it was like you went through your Rolodex by tapping and when you got to them, just hold your finger down and you call...

Just wanted to bump this thread. Hopefully, we'll get our 2.1 sooner rather than later... but until then..

So, I've tried SmartDialer - couldn't get it to see contact photos
QuickDial - pretty cool, and what I'm looking for, but limited contact space, and I wish it scrolled down instead of 3 pages across.. needs better options.

UltimateFaves - really cool program and nice idea. But I didn't love it as a contact dialer. Could have used space more efficiently than the tiny wheel.

aTakephone - was really cool and clearly thought out, but just too bulky. I don't really want a replacement, just light add-on.

If anyone's familiar, I really liked the photo dialer that I had set up with SPB's Mobile Shell 3 (for WinMo), which seemed heavily influenced by the android OS.
I'm just looking for options.

I've been kinda shocked that there's not more contact management and Media Player apps for cupcake or donut... but I guess we're all moving away from there soon.

Not sure if this will help you, but I set up a bunch of shortcuts to my most popular contacts on my "Left of Home" screen.. On that screen, just press n hold, select "add shortcut" the choose "contact". From there, select your more popular contact, and it will add their contact folder to that screen. This method has been very handy for me, as I only have like 6 popular contacts, and when flip to that screen, I am one click away from any contact info for anyof those (and possibility of many more) contacts.

I use SpeedDial a lot as a shortcut on home screens. You can set the icon up to call the number right away, place the number in dialer, send text or email.

You can also create a folder on your home screen and then just place your icon contacts in the folder to save on space.

I don't have very many contacts I call on a regular basis so this is perfect for me.

I just did exactly this and it will work really great for me! Thanks! :)

I figured there were other free options out there. I know it sounds cheap to not want to pay even a buck, but IMO its just as cheap for the dev to start charging like that just because he knows a bunch of people are having to upgrade their firmware like this. With the amount of free and open source apps out there I have a no pay policy on apps.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have used SuperDial (from episode6) there is another one, but it has chinese stuff, like ThaiDial, also works but has weird letters on top of numbers, but it has the english letters as well, used ThaiDial before switching to SuperDial (from episode6) never tried the other SuperDial so I can't review it... ThaiDial looked bigger keys and a bit better but I wanted a white dialer, thaidial is grey, so if you're like me and like to fine-tune your stuff then go by the color. If you don't care about colors then ThaiDial is a great looking one.
