Root [How-To] Manually install Gingerbread OTA(s) if rooted.

This is for people like me who like to do things themselves for whatever their given reason. I thought I would be the only one interested in such a method, but here it is in case someone else may find use of it.

Note: In order to follow the steps in this thread all original apps (bloatware) must be present. If you deleted them, my suggestion is to make a nandroid backup, reset to stock and copy the .apk's needed.

Stock apps pulled from a stock rom. Put the ones you're missing into system/apps via a file explorer or adb push.

The gingerbread RUU and image file are out! See this thread for the files if you'd like to go that route instead. Just follow http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/420788-how-regain-root-s-off.html after updating.

First you'll need some files.

Stock Recovery
Clockwork 5.0.2.0
Superuser 3.0.6
FAT32 SD card

Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread (3.26.605.1 to 4.08.605.2)

Download 3.26.605.1 to 4.08.605.2

Step 1.
Rename Stock-recovery_PB31IMG.zip to PB31IMG.zip and place it on the root of your SD card.

Step 2.
Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. PB31IMG.zip will be loaded and you will be prompted to install. Navigate with power up/down to select 'yes' and hit the power button. Reboot the phone.

Step 3.
Remove PB31IMG.zip from the SD card.

Step 4.
Rename 5059e5b6c5b2.OTA_Incredible_C_Gingerbread_S_VERIZON_WWE_4.08.605.2-3.26.605.1_release_222220.zip to update.zip and place on the root of your SD card. Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. If not prompted, navigate into recovery and select to update from update.zip. Sometimes this update gives an error and presents you with a red triangle. If this happens, press volume up and the power button to get to the menu and select to run the update.zip again. Reboot the phone.

Step 5.
Remove update.zip from the SD card.

Step 6.
Rename recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc_PB31IMG.zip to PB31IMG.zip and place it on the root of your SD card.

Step 7.
At this point you have a new feature on your phone called fastboot. We're going to disable this as it prevents entry into hboot. Proceed to Settings/Applications and uncheck it at the bottom.

Step 8.
Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. PB31IMG.zip will be loaded and you will be prompted to install. Navigate with power up/down to select 'yes' and hit the power button. Wait for it to finish, should be very quick. Reboot the phone.

Step 9.
Remove PB31IMG.zip from the SD card.

Step 10.
Place Superuser-3.0.6-efgh-signed.zip on your SD card.

Step 11.
Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. Navigate into recovery and select 'Install zip from SD card'. Select and run it. Reboot the phone.

Step 12.
Remove Superuser-3.0.6-efgh-signed.zip.zip from the SD card.

You're done! Should be up to date on 4.08.605.2 with clockwork and root! Enjoy!

Gingerbread to Gingerbread (4.06.605.3 to 4.08.605.2)

Download 4.06.605.3 to 4.08.605.2

Step 1.
Rename Stock-recovery_PB31IMG.zip to PB31IMG.zip and place it on the root of your SD card.

Step 2.
At this point you have a new feature on your phone called fastboot. We're going to disable this as it prevents entry into hboot. Proceed to Settings/Applications and uncheck it at the bottom.

Step 3.
Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. PB31IMG.zip will be loaded and you will be prompted to install. Navigate with power up/down to select 'yes' and hit the power button. Reboot the phone.

Rename 6cad8272f75b.OTA_Incredible_C_Gingerbread_S_VERIZON_WWE_4.08.605.2-4.06.605.3_release_222219.zip to update.zip and place on the root of your SD card. Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. If not prompted, navigate into recovery and select to update from update.zip. Sometimes this update gives an error and presents you with a red triangle. If this happens, press volume up and the power button to get to the menu and select to run the update.zip again. Reboot the phone.

Step 6.
Rename recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc_PB31IMG.zip to PB31IMG.zip and place it on the root of your SD card.

Step 7.
Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. PB31IMG.zip will be loaded and you will be prompted to install. Navigate with power up/down to select 'yes' and hit the power button. Wait for it to finish, should be very quick. Reboot the phone.

Step 8.
Remove PB31IMG.zip from the SD card.

Place Superuser-3.0.6-efgh-signed.zip on your SD card.

Step 10.
Power the phone down and enter hboot by holding volume down and power. Navigate into recovery and select 'Install zip from SD card'. Select and run it. Reboot the phone.

Step 11.
Remove Superuser-3.0.6-efgh-signed.zip.zip from the SD card.

Step 12.
Remove update.zip from the SD card.

You're done! Should be up to date on 4.08.605.2 with clockwork and root! Enjoy!

For some reason, I am having difficulty with this process.. I get update successful at step 2, follow step 3 and 4, but then get the red triangle at step 4. When I Hboot into step 4, the first time, it looks for an image, doesn't find one, then appears to automatically jump into some update process (green arrows and circle). After about 1/3 of the process I get the red triange. At no point in time was I able to select "recovery" from the Hboot menu, nor select the update.zip file. From this point on, all I get is the red triangle.

If on successive boots to Hboot, it again looks for an image file, but then allows me to select "recovery". I select it, and the phone looks like it is starting to boot normally, but then red triangle. For me to get anywhere, I have to pull the battery as it won't turn off otherwise.

I've verified the file names, re-downloaded the update, reset the device to factory, and nothing seems to get me past setp 4. Luckily, I can boot to the device so I am still functioning, but I am lost otherwise.

Current software as reported by phone:
Android version - 2.2
Baseband - 2.15.00.07.28
Kernel - 2.6.32.17-g9a2fc16
Build - 3.26.605.1 CL264707
Software - 3.26.605.1

Any thoughts??

I believe you have to press the power button when you are on the "red triangle" screen to bring up the option to update.

getting the same red triangle loops. the warning that comes up when it tries to auto-recover is (in green text) "no image or wrong image!" or something like that.

I'm upgrading from 4.06 to 4.08 so this occurs at step 7.

after selecting recovery, the "htc incredible" text comes up and the phone makes a very quiet little clickety noise before going to the phone+red triangle screen.

vol up + power does bring up the recovery menu but it still got me nowhere.

Volume up and power do nothing on my end other than cause the phone to vibrate 3 times and stay powered down. In reading this and that, I ran across a page stating that the hboot and clockwork mod boot screens are different? Mine is booting to a white screen with the little android guys on skateboards at the bottom. Is this the correct screen that I need to be in to update?

Never did I think that this portion would cause people so much trouble considering this is the smaller gap to jump and the one I tested myself..

You will indeed get the red triangle screen and you should be able to bump past the red triangle menu. If your phone isn't power and you're getting 3 vibrations, then you aren't in hboot or stock recovery to begin with.

When you load into hboot, and then into recovery, it should automatically try to use update.zip. At this point it will appear with a red triangle. When that happens, volume up + power should get you past it and you can select to run update.zip yourself. At that time it should work fine. You -have- to be in stock!

That screen would be hboot. From this menu you must select recovery.

Yeah, it's crazy. I only know how to use ClockworkMod, ha ha. It's weird that ClockworkMod won't install these OTAs though. It (CWM) worked fine for the Nov 2010 FroYo update OTA.

Yeah, it is pretty odd. I'm currently backing my phone up and I'll see what I can do about some pictures...not promising any tonight though. I work in a few, so maybe tomorrow evening.

Turns out I can't get pictures in hboot, only recovery - but it picks up the update.zip on mine so quickly that I can't grab a picture lol. Once I get 4.06.605.3 installed I'm hoping I can grab a screenshot of the error and how I get past it....

It is updating from 4.06.605.3 to 4.08.605.2 flawlessly for me.

I did however find out that the stock recovery file is different from the actual stock recovery. Whoever wrote that file changed the way it handles things. I couldn't update from the zip with it until I flashed the stock recovery listed in this thread.

I really am not sure what is going on for those of you that are having issues...

Worse case, a reset should allow you to update. I know that is not a great answer considering you're likely here to avoid having to setup your phone after a rom install or anything of the sort...

And I couldn't get any pictures. That's a clockwork recovery thing and unfortunately we can't use it for these steps...

I also got stuck in a red triangle loop...

I'm not sure what I was hoping to accomplish, but I wound up going back to Clockwork recovery, where I decided to wipe cache and Dalvik cache before returning to stock recovery for another try.

After that, the update went as expected... until I hit the low on space error. Moving a bunch of apps to SD fixed that, which allowed me to finish this Gingerbread cookie.

You're welcome! Maybe clearing cache an dalvik cache is the solution for the others as well. I didnt do that on mine, but i also don't use many apps...

Apparently the error comes from the APK missing. It is something essential to the phone. There are 2 fixes. Factory reset, or push the APK to your app folder. http://maikar.thebloodyred.com/EPST.apk is from my phone. Humor me on this...

Just in case you're not sure. You can push it with adb, if you don't have the sdk get root explorder or the free ES File Explorer, under the settings turn on the root explore options and copy the file from your sdcard to system/app.
