For those that have been around for a while... did the Thunderbolt, Dinc, Dinc2, Bionic, etc... all just magically get announced and sold instantaneously? Or was their several days to a week that everyone knew pretty much exactly when to be online to order at 12:01am?

Well I remember the Bionic's date being announced Sept.7th....and the date being Sept.8th................................so yeah

I know with the Droid 3, it was online orders first, July 7th, instore July 14th. I expect the same with the GNex. Online first then in store. This is what I wonder if presales start this week, shipping on 11/28 and in store 12/8.

Jumping out of lurker mode as well. Not to drop "My dog knows a high-level Sprint rep who knows a cat who knows a Verizon rep" post, but to ask a semi-serious question, that might be stupid:

Every time I got a phone from Verizon (in store), they ripped it open to set it up for me. Assuming it comes out in stores the same time it hits online, I'd most likely just drive over and pick one up before my 9:30 class. Of course I'd have to be in and out and not let them set it up.

Basically: Is it possible to just go in, pay for the phone, then leave without them activating it for me?

I think Verizon opens at 10:00 am

Yes, just ask them politely not to and I'm sure they'll comply, as Verizon lets customers activate phones themselves instead of having to do it in-store. Also tell them you know what's in the box already so you don't need a walkthrough :p

Store hours vary depending on location IIRC. Maybe not if the GNex is dropping tomorrow, though. But it probably won't considering they're not going to make an announcement tonight and they would have to do so before store hours tomorrow, and we haven't heard reports of shipments coming to other stores yet.

Not trying to be rude here but can someone explain me what the sayings in the avatars actually mean? BB if your tuning in I'm seriously just asking what those quotes mean, I don't really get it

OK - to respond to this and to the many (note the edit) -

A "suit" is a slang term for an executive.

The quote translates to BabyBlues telling her pet dragon that it can't eat the Verizon executives (read: put them to death) until the Gnex is released.

It seems perfectly playful and creative.

You youngun's enjoy your youth (which IMHO is wasted on the young).

I, for one, would never go back to my 20s UNLESS I could go back knowing what I know now.

Which, pertaining to Nexus, is depressingly little :(

if I had to be any age again - I'd be 11. 6th grade was good. Teens - too much fake drama, 20s - lots of real life drama -- looking forward to hitting 30. Besides, I apparently look like I'm 17, I got carded for an R-rated movie last year! I celebrated/moped after with a beer (which I didn't get carded for  )

Ok. Now I'm offically going back to real life -- wayyyy to much to do this week. PM me if something really juicy happens - BB I'm looking at you! ;)

Currently watching ReZound commercial #5 during Bears game.

I thought they were in love with advertising the Razr?

If I wasn't scared the ReZound will end up like the Thunderbolt with no good fully working AOSP rom support and NFC I would be tempted.

My Thunderbolt experience basically destroyed all the positives HTC had created in my mind from the Incredible.

Did you actually see any verizon branding? I saw one today, but didn't see Verizon listed anywhere. Seems to be HTC putting out this advertising, not verizon.

Given the apparent disdain of the "suits" for the GNex I would not be surprised if the phone just showed up erratically in stores/online with no announcement or fanfare. Can't cannibalize those Razr sales. Oh, I guess this is the disappointed/cynical time of day alluded to earlier?

As ridiculous as Verizon and its logic may seem, they would never do something like that... This is too big of a phone (in terms of importance) to be able to shrug it off like that.

Dinc preorder was known a couple days prior too....I know we were all waiting for it to turn midnight and the preorders to open.

Thunderbolt was officially announced 2 days prior to release.

HTC Press Release - Read the Latest HTC Mobile Phone News

So then in recent history on VZW a high demand phone has never just launched without notice ahead of time (even if minimum 1 day). So, safe to assume that it ain't happening tonight/tomorrow (12:01am).

We should probably be more concerned about a press release, then... instead of worrying about testman going down or other craziness.

Just to be pedantic - ICS on the Nexus _is_ The AOSP ROM.

All others will be derivative works.

In the past, an AOSP rom would be used to reduce the software stack to just what Google provides, and then to provide enhancements.

ICS is AOSP and I think many will notice from the unveiling video a lot of CM-like features, already baked in. (I remember repeated comments identifying them during our live IRC chat of the unveiling, in fact.)

Between this being the Google phone and the lead for CyanogenMod now working for Samsung, there's already a lot of goodness coming right when the box opens.

Not saying that the independent devs can't or won't add twists and flairs to enhance it even more - just being specific on terms here. ;) :)
