Thanks STEVEN58 for the encouragement to ask questions as newbies.

I have a droid x that was previously rooted on Froyo. Wiped phone clean and did the update to GB .605 and now wifi tethering is lost. Tried to reroot but the old superuser remains on phone. Did an update on superuser to superuser elite. my system has 4.5.605. Android 2.3.3. Supreruser 3.0.5. SU binary 2.3.1. When I use su updater it tells me it has an su update. When I run update it goes through a sequence of verifications and asks to Allow or Deny Superuser request. When I select Allow it runs another sequence - downloading new binary...okay, Checking md5sum ...okay, and gives me "gaining root access ... fail".

Should I try to go back to .602 and use oneclickroot to root my Droid and if so how do i go back to .602? Will this remove old superuser with old binary?

I believe its Google updating your position on your gps software. I have one of my location assisted boxes checked and whenever I open my browser the radio antenna turns blue and the gps circle shows up for a second. I think the browser, an app or some kind of location software might be running in the background.

I don't understand everyone's dependence on tethering anymore. I will admit I originally got interested in rooting my X a long time back for the tethering option so I could tether the kids Ipad's and Ipod's. But once VZW released Gingerbread and supposedly could track things, I haven't used it since. But I did find an alternative and works perfect. I simple pair the Ipad's with my X using Bluetooth and the kids can surf the net just like tethering. So, right now, I have no need for tethering.

Using Bluetooth to connect your iPad to your phone for internet access is still tethering.

Also, when I run Netflix on my computer using Wireless Tether, the upload rate is about the same as the download rate and I assume that is because the program is reporting the data it is sending to the computer as uploaded. I doubt this phone and network can continuously upload 1.5Mbps over a 3G connection for an hour.

DarkCyber - could you point me to a bluetooth method which worked for you please. Thanks Dan

Can someone sticky this? It has worked for both patching and un-patching on both .602 and .605 for me. He also has it working on the Droid 2. ;)

i have wifi in my house, so i dont need tethering :)

Yeah I have wifi too, but sometimes my ip likes to turn off the internet for long extended periods of time during midterm and finals weeks... So when I need to get to a study guide or need to take a break and watch some Hulu plus, I gotz to have my interwebz!

You need to re-root. This same thing happened to a client of mine. Check out my Droid X root vid, you should be fine to proceed rooting 605: [BAS] Root Droid 1, 2, X, X2, 3, Pro, and Others on Gingerbread - YouTube
