does galaxy nexus play video well enough?

Hi, I am seriously considering galaxy nexus !
Out of all the important features, video playing capability is very important to me.
I know GSII plays almost any video, 720p or 1080p, very smoothly without
using video app like dice or mx players.
I want to know how galaxy nexus plays videos !
I am coming from OG EVO 4G and it cannot play 720P with mx player smooth enough and importantly sprint 3g speed here in Reno, NV is shitty.
I know VZ has 4G here !

That isn't exactly dependent on the actually phone if I understand your question. You are talking about streaming videos? Either way I would assume the GN would be better than the Evo since in most real-world tests I have seen online Verizon's LTE is usually faster than Sprint's WiMax. On the other hand what you may be experiencing is trying to play MKV HD format on a non-compatible phone and it looks like its not smooth but really it plays in a skippy way because it is not compatible. If that is the case usually those specific players are the only option and even then they don't play EVERY MKV file.

Of all the features, the GNex will probably be the best video player on the market. The OMAP 4460 processor has built in hardware HD decoding, so it uses little overhead. Video playback will certainly be a strong point.

I'm not sure why you would be concerned with playing video where the resolution is higher than the phones display resolution. Playing anything higher than 800 x 480 on your Evo will not result in any better image quality and will most likely just bog the phone down to where it can't play smoothly (like you're describing) because it isn't fast enough to handle the bit-rate and/or downscale the HD content to the displays native resolution. It all depends on the type of videos you're trying to play too though.

thank you guys. and sorry for not clarifying my question well enough.
I usually download high resolution videos from online and put them into my phone to watch whenever I want.
Not streaming from youtube !

I have a Nexus and the playback of High Res video's are great, need to use DicePlayer atm as that's the only one with hardware acceleration.

Soooooo many people make this exact mistake. That is why, as you point out, I transcoded many movies to 480p for my thunderbolt, which has the same screen rez. Plus, since that is the same as DVD, it looks acceptable for big screen playback if you give it adequate bps.

Really? Does your laptop not have an HDMI port? Mine does and it auto-extends onto the TV as soon as I plug it in too .

Do you carry your TV around with you to play HD videos on too (OP is talking about playing on his phone, not a TV)?
