Root 2.2 ROM I found.

I have finally rooted wife's phone. I had heck of hard time with that yesterday, but this morning, it all went quite well.
1st thing to do after, was to install Battery Calibration app and charge phone to 100%, then run calibration.
2nd thing was to get Juice Defender onto it.
I'll see later how it all works - interface basically looks identical to OEM one, less annoying Verizon and Bing intrusions - but here's word on battery life.
I had that phone unplugged from charger at around 10 or so am. Even with wife using it as usual, and me checking on it once in a while, I had battery at 90% by the time she left for work. That was at 5pm. That phone has never ever been so good on battery life.
Thank you all for your help and patience.
Please, keep in mind, that this thread has 2 links to 2 installs possible. one is install by pastorbennett and one is install by txwolf1980.
maybe, guides, not installs, but there's extra programs involved in 2nd one.
anyhow, 2nd one is more time taking, but appears to be more thorough. your call what to use.2nd route took me maybe 30 minutes total this morning.

ok, folks, get ready to read this.

we have not charged her continuum since 10 am yesterday, she left for work, and battery is still showing well over 50%. she looked at it and said - no need to charge, and took off. for a phone that used to go dead in less than an hour of phone conversation, THIS IS AMAZING!!
thank you folks for great upgrade.

PS. she left at 5:27PM. it's 31 hrs since last charge.

someone somewhere mentioned some glitches in walkthrough for Continuum rooting.
I - with great respect to txwolf for all his work - took liberty of twiking those instructions some. maybe this is working for noobs like me better:

What you will need:
1. You need to be able to connect your phone to your PC, using USB to micro USB cable and Samsung drivers:
Samsung Drivers. Samsung
2. You will need a program that allows you to download programs onto your phone, most commonly used is Odin:
Odin MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service
3. You will need programs that will allow you to manually install updates onto your phone in CWM mode, and programs that you can download onto it using Odin. They are listed below, in order you will use them:

# 1. CWM kernel http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30171389/cwm...est4_adryn.tar
#2. EC07 Kernel http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30171389/ec07.tar
#3. EC07 ROM http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30171389/ec07-deodex.zip
Programms #1 and #2 are installed using Odin. Programm #3 is installed in manual mode, or CWM mode.
NONE OF THE FILES YOU DOWNLOADED NEEDS TO BE UNZIPPED! If you unzip it, your PC will not recognize file at all.
Ok. Lets get started.
1. Install the Samsung drivers onto your computer.
2. Connect phone to PC using micro USB cable. Go to the drop down menu on your phone, check if it shows USB connection. Drop down menu and select “connect mass storage”>confirm it. Windows Explorer should pop up a window, showing entire content of your phone’s memory card. It may take some time to build driver database on PC, so give it that time. Drag and drop CWM http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30171389/update.zip and #3 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30171389/ec07-deodex.zip
Onto your card. Do NOT place them into any folder or unzip!
3. Double click on downloaded Odin file Odin MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service and extract the Odin.zip contents into a folder where you can get to them( Desktop is preferred). Open the program. Make sure to uncheck “Auto reboot”. Click on “PDA” button in Odin. This will prompt to windows explorer window>desktop>click on #1. CWM kernel http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30171389/cwm...est4_adryn.tar > open. File will show in Odin, next to PDA button.
4. Place your phone into download mode for Odin and connect it to PC.
To do so, press and hold power button on the phone>power off> remove back cover>remove battery> connect micro USB cable to the phone>hold DOWN volume button on your phone.
You should get a yellow box in Odin with the word COM and a couple of numbers. If you don't have this, do not proceed, your phone is not connected to PC/Odin.
If connected, your phone will show a yellow picture of an 'android' with a shovel and yellow triangle with exclamation mark in it. It will also say "Do not turn off target"
4. Click START button in Odin. Download will begin. It should take less than a minute. You will see a green progress bar going across the box with the word 'Kernel' in it. Wait until it says 'RESET' before removing USB cable from your phone.
5. Re-insert battery back into the phone, and immediately press both UP and DOWN volume buttons and POWER button. BEWARE THAT BATTERY HAS TENDENCY TO EASILY SLIDE OUT OF ITS COMPARTMENT, so have it secured.
SAMSUNG logo will appear on display. The very moment it does, let go off buttons, still securing battery in place. You should see black screen with blue words on it and ‘manaul mode” down at the bottom. This is stock recovery screen.
6. Press DOWN volume key to scroll to update zip. Tap where soft key “menu” is on your phone. It is not highlighted, so make sure you know where it is before attempting this. Display should switch to RED words in lines. This is your CWM recovery screen.
7. Using phone volume button, scroll to backup/restore> press phone POWER button> scroll down to 'yes'> press POWER button. Now is a good time to get a drink. You are backing up your current stock rom. After this, if you can get into recovery, you can always go back to stock.
8. When backup is done, you will be in CWM recovery, RED screen again. You need to reboot system in CWM recovery (RED screen). If you see it on your display, select and press POWER button. If you do not see it on your screen, press phone where soft BACK key normally is on your phone. Either way, select REBOOT>confirm>allow time to reboot. Once your system has fully rebooted, power it back off by removing battery.
9. Go back to Odin, and click 'RESET'. Then place the #2. EC07 Kernel http://dl.dropbox.com/u/30171389/ec07.tar file in the PDA section, by clicking on PDA>desktop>chose file. Confirm it is in PDA section; uncheck AUTOREBOOT.
11. Click start in Odin. This will install the kernel and modem for EC07. Again, it should be done in less than a minute. It will hang on "MODEM' for a few seconds, don't be alarmed. This is normal.
12. Ensure you have "RESET" BEFORE you unplug your phone. After you get "pass" and "reset", unplug your phone, and reboot into stock recovery, using steps in #5. Don't get eager, now.
13. Put phone in CWM mode, as in step 6 (RED screen)>scroll down to 'install .zip from sdcard'> POWER button> select 'choose zip from sd card'> POWER button> scroll down to 'EC07.zip'>press POWER button>scroll to YES> press POWER button. This will take a minute or so to install.
15. When done>tap soft BACK key area on the phone> main CWM menu( RED)> then go down to 'advanced'>POWER button.
16. Select wipe dalvik cache' and yes. This should be pretty quick (Your dalvik cache does not wipe your apps. but it does wipe the interactions your apps have developed with your rom. Wiping this will prevent force close issues.) In same screen where you could chose to wipe Davlik, you can remove battery stats, then use Battery Calibration application to improve your phone battery life. BC app requires phone to be rooted 1st, as it removes improper battery statistics file.
17, Back out to main CWM menu and select 'wipe cache partition'> yes.
18. If you have some time to kill, and want some extra insurance, go back to the CWM main menu, and select wipe data/factory reset. This WILL delete all of your apps, and personal info. It will NOT revert you back to stock. Not doing this will not cause a brick, so if you don't have contacts and what not backed up, don't worry about doing it.
19. Back out to CWM main menu, and select 'reboot system now.'
20. You will sit on the verizon splash screen for a while here. It's rebuilding your dalvik and doing final install. DO NOT PULL YOUR BATTERY. This can take 5-15 minutes. Leave it alone, grab a drink, or lunch, or harass a loved one if they are available.,. WALK AWAY.
21, After several eternities (so it will seem) your phone will finally finish booting. Go to Settings>about phone, and scroll down. You should see
firmware version: 2.2.2
Baseband version: S:i400.0.6V.ec06
Kernel: 2.6.32.9
Build number: SC H-I400 EC07
If it says all of that, then you have successfully flashed a pre-rooted rom. Congratulations. Now, start playing.
But first: Remember how you made that original back up? Reboot into recovery (3 finger method) select sdcard:update.zip, scroll down to backup and restore, then back up. Yeah. Do that. That way, when you screw up your rom due to a mod you tried or made (and you will, it's all part of learning), you have something to go back to other than stock.

I followed the directions to a T with my continuum. I got to step 13 and the first time I went to select update.zip (holding down softkeys) it told me it couldn't verify the zip file signature. Now when i boot it goes to the recovery utils and they softkeys no longer work to select update.zip. It also says update.zip gone on the bottom under #manual mode# please help I'm a noob. Was I supposed to do something before I started these instructions? Help please. Right now I'm bricked -it just boots to system recovery and I can't select anything =(

But you were able to get into cwm the first time? Try reflashing the cwm adrynalyne test4.tar. Then, flash the ec07 deodexed. Also, make sure that update.zip (cwm) is still on the root of your sd card. If you didn't do a nandroid backup (as in haven't tried to get into cwm, before) I'd imagine that a bad cwm kernel flash is your issue. in that case, download a fresh copy and try it again. if that doesn't work, send me a pm on android central ( i actually have that one subscribed on tapatalk, so I'll get it immediately) and I'll work you through it. Either that, or swing into IRC and we'll see what we can do chatting real time.

Glad I found this forum too. A lot of good information on here. Can anyone else recommend any other builds they have used and had luck with?
Your best bet (and in my mind, the only safe
Option) is the forum over at xda. There are several there. Pattielipps "miunia" rom is pretty stable and very light weight. Nuckins rom is bare bones, and the one you flashed seems (to me) to be the best of all world's.

To install a different rom can we just follow the same directions as above but sub in the build for the ec07-deodex.zip?

You don't even have to go that far. As long as it is an ec07 build, you should be able to simply place the rom on your sd card and install via cwm. Wipe your dalvik and go. But, that being said, 2 cautions.
1. Don't try to flash a rom built for another phone. Bad things will happen.
2. Figure out what the specific instructions for that rom are, if possible.

Tx, hope you are still keeping an eye on this thread?

I followed the Froyo instructions given by both you and ukrkoz. Firmware upgrade went well. Played around with 2.2.2 a while, and to be honest I wasn't too impressed. The screen often hesitates, I have problems downloading and installing aps from the android marketplace, etc.

I'm wanting to revert back to stock, but not real clear on how. I checked over at xda - but having a hard time making the leap from what little I know about the process to the slim directions given over there. Any help/suggestions anyone can send my way would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

IAmMac:
Yes, i keep this thread subscribed for situations like this.
To be honest, I'd rather figure out how to get 2.2.2 up to your specs, The two situations you reported can be fixed by
1. clearing your caches. This will help with lagginess. Of course, touchwhiz is a resource hog, anyway. That can be solved by downloading a different launcher from the market (i recommend go launcher, myself)
2. doing a factory reset. Get sms backup and titanium backup from the market and back up your messages and apps first. Then make sure your contacts and gmail are synced. Then do a reset.

As for the downloading from market issue, go to setting>applications> manage applications and clear data and cache from market. That should solve that issue.

All of that aside, if you still want to revert, go here

[DEV] Continuum DataBase [DL17][EC03][EC07] - xda-developers

and download this file

DL17 Factory stock rom+radio+kernel (odex) all in one odin flash:

Then flash it in ODIN the same way you flashed both of the files in my tutorial.

Give me til tomorrow so I can check the file and make sure it has everything you need, before you flash it, though. I'd hate for you to do so, and have it wind up not having the dl17 kernel.

If you want to keep this rom, and resolve whatever issues you are having with it, post a list of them and we can get together in IRC at some point to see about getting them hashed out.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply! I had already cleared the caches.

The main ap I'm having problems with is Go Weather. I have to download it and try installing it several times before it is "successful" even then, it doesn't work well - it won't recognize skins I download.

Okay, I'm trying all the resets. First is the one from the three fingered menu. No changes. Then I go to privacy settings, after it finishes I get a bunch of red messages:
FOTA wipe failed
Data wipe failed
Cache wipe failed
Ob data wipe failed
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0b3
(No such file or directory)
E:install_application_for_customer:Can't mount HIDDENSDCARD

your storage not prepared yet. please use UI menu for format and reboot actions
copy application failed

Tried it a couple of times, same result. Also tried another micro-SD card.

Not an emergency, as this is a backup Continuum I bought to play around with.

I'm assuming you can still boot to the rom? If so, I'd try this:

1. flash the ec07 deodexed again, then try to wipe. Something got corrupted, somewhere.

2. And if that fails, you can go back to stock as I described ^^ and then reflash if you'd like.

3. The other option is to download and flash this file

EC07 Leak stock rom+radio+kernel (odex) all in one odin flash

along with this one in the PIT section (making sure repartition is checked)

EC07 .Pit

from the same link. that is stock froyo. Then, if you want to try the rom again, reflash the cwm adrynalyne test4

after that, boot into cwm and flash ec07 deodexed from your sd card.

Once again, hold off on flashing stock until I have a chance to dig into it, unless you feel risky. If you do, and it soft bricks you, just flash the stock ec07 and the PIT file, and that'll get you back up.

The files I just referenced aren't links, they are just what they are named in the link I gave you in the previous post.

i know i just gave you several options thrown together. If you want to stay on 2.2.2 then I'd do scenario 1, and then 3, if that doesn't work.

EDIT: just checked the DL17 stock that I linked, and it looks like it has everything you need, short of the bootloaders. But, since you can boot fine, that isn't an issue. Since it doesn't have them, it won't overwrite the onese that are on there now.

Not sure what you mean by "still boot to the rom"?
1. flash the ec07 deodexed again, then try to wipe. Something got corrupted, somewhere.
I decided to try the entire process again. Note, that my screen says:
CwM Voodoo LogFix Recovery v2.5.1.x, followed by a menu that is the same given in the previous instructions. However, my menu is about the same color as this font.

Appreciate the help. The Go Weather thing isn't working quite right after re-flashing, but it did re-install without any apparent mis-haps on the first go round. I'll probably give this a try for a few days and see how it works out.

Thanks again!

Well that's irritating. So much for perfection. But, if you have a work around.... if not, come on into IRC and we'll see what we can do to slap the silly thing into submission.

Just thought I'd update you.

The phone has been working great for over a week now! The GoWeather ap straightened itself out after a couple of power cycles. The only thing I'm missing is the Verizon Backup Assistant - which after reading thru the forum seems to be a common thing. I was able to back-up to the micro-sd from my original phone and restore to the "updated" phone.

Do you have a link handy which explains the process, and/or terminology? I've rooted phones, installed boot loaders and firmware on other devices. Reading thru the process for the smart phones seems a bit different.

Thanks again for the help, this was fun!

Ok. I'm a little tired, so let me make sure I'm getting you. You want a guide on how to pull stuff from your sd card to your phone? Let me know what I'm missing here. As for the reason this rom (and most others) ditch backup assistant, it's because with google sync, it's totally redundant.
