Last week I replaced my Treo 750 with a Hero. After spending 5 hours I converted my contacts into the Hero. I have also installed a couple of apps.
I just checked the phone specifics:
Firmware Version 1.5
Build number 1.44.557.2
Software version 1.44.557.2
I assume this phone needs updating, right. Question is- what about the apps installed and contact list? Can I back them up somewhere?

You will need to backup your contacts. You can do this in several ways:

(1) HTC Sync
(2) Convert all of your contacts to google contacts, they will be backup up and restored automatically, apparently.
(3) Use an app like MyBackup or Sprite backup (useful cos they will backup loads of stuff, not just contacts)

You dont need to backup your apps, android marketplace remembers what youve bought so you can re-download them. However, if you dont want the hassle of redownloading them you can back them up using either AppManager or Astro File Manager.

Not 100% accurate but close enough. If you have any apps that are copy protected it might be a few weeks before you get to access them on new ROMS. New roms need to be certified by google before they can access copy protected(encrypted) apps.
