Noob here trying to figure out a couple things

Ok i haven't even got my hero yet, it's ordered and i have been reading and reading and the more i read more confused i get....i want to root the phone but my questions is can someone explain a couple things? I read alot of people are happy with Fresh 1.1 w/ the Gumbo Kernel???? Ok so when i get my phone do i use pre-kitchen to root i then i flash Fresh 1.1 and then Gumbo????? I keep reading the guides inc. but without pictures or the phone in front of me its hard for me to comprehend the whole process.

Thanks,

Yeah, it's easy too.
1. Download/Install the kitchen
2. Auto-Root (If you have "With Google" check the box, reboot, and repeat without checking the box) *USB Debugging has to be on (Settings>Applications>Development)
3. Boot into the recovery screen (holding home while powering on)
4. Create a nandroid backup (need about 600MB space on the SD card)
5. Put Fresh Rom zip on the SD root.
6. Run the zip from recovery mode
7. Wait a long time for the first boot (5-10 minutes, don't freak out when it takes longer than usual)
8. Do steps 5-8 except with the Gumbo kernel zip
9. Use the kitchen to change lock screens, start up screens, and installed Sprint apps.
10. Enjoy!

*Not responsible for you messing up your phone. :D

Thanks,

I see you are coming from the Blackberry 8330....I too came straight from that phone to the Hero, and I DON'T regret it for one moment!!!

However, just before I sold my BB, I rooted it....and made it into a BB Tour (which was super sweeeeet!)

When you get your hero...the instructions on the "sticky" notes about ROOTING are easy....if you take your time. I went about the whole process by auto-rooting, and it was all over with in just a few mins.....but the long way could be the best way for "knowledge gaining" reasons. The choice is yours, either which way you're going to L.O.V.E your phone!!!!

Have fun with it....and read, read, read....everything that is in this forum. SO much info and great people to ask any questions you may have :):):)

Thanks for all the info i appreciate it, iam supposed to have the phone tommorow i cant wait...i have been reading so much about it my wife is complaining because iam on here so much lol...

She better get used to it, because it only gets worse. Now that you have your phone you will be sitting in front of the computer on the forums then when you get off the computer you will be playing with your phone trying out all the new stuff you learned on the forum. It's a vicious cycle. Oh yeah, and get used to going to bed around 2 or 3 in the morning. The Hero is not a phone it's a way of life.:D
