not sure if I'm even going to give it to her in the box! I might do one of the silly, 'Oh who's phone is ringing?' things and have it sitting out in the open where she doesn't notice. She'd do something like that to other people but find it annoying if done to her, so I think it could be hilarious. Or I might make it ring in a box. Something lame like that -- so no she probably won't know about the box contents! :p

It's ok BB, I'm going to kiss my Gnex too! I get way too excited about new things. I slept in my first pair of rollerblades when I was 8 the day I got them...

I plan on making my daughter's phone ring in the box Christmas morning. It's corny but so fun.

I slept in my first pair of Cavaricci jeans.

The flip side of going to the store, you get the peace of mind of walking out knowing most everything works.

I never do my Google set up in the store, but I do check the call quality and GPS and basic functions.

I don't care about the rep handling it because within the first week, most everyone I know is going to get to play with any new Android I get, so I always figure what's one more?

That said, I have a few reps at one Radio Shack that I've developed good rapport with and go with them.

I have seen it cheaper on line than at the store in the past, 2 years ago that is.

Call me paranoid but.......

I went with a friend to purchase his OG Droid at a corp store in Feb of 2010 and was a bit taken back in how long it took the guy to reappear at the desk with the box all opened up and papers all hanging out and such.
It took forever for him to hand it over. He was going through the phone for several minutes and looking at the computer. Heck, I dunno?

When we were at the bar later we took a look at the 16GB card and it was a no-name unit that was only labeled 16GB and a name I never heard of or can remember. Mine shipped with a Sandisk. His battery was fully charged. I expressed my observations but he couldn't care less, bought me a beer and still has the phone to this day.

In contrast, with my online purchase, I took it out of the box and the battery was around 25%, and it was activated in minutes, and had a Sandisk card. I can also remember a price break when ordered online, or perhaps the store ignored the loyalty discount.

I am going to have a look at Costco if I don't have to wait too long. There is no back room for them to go into and I'll tell him to just hand me the box and take my money.

But if the price is a wash I'll just order online. I am positive I will not buy at a Verizon Corp Store. Something spooks me about them.

I've heard people talking about buying from Costco a lot recently. My nearest Costco is pretty far away, but can someone tell me why I would want to go there to buy instead of, say, online or at a VZW store? (not taking gapi's friend's experience into consideration)

That's hilarious and devious. I'm not sure if I should scold you or commend you. If I was 16, I would do it... but a decade of actually coming to like my parents makes me second guess the idea. But then again, she'd probably just loose them... I guess it will depend on how much I like them while I set up her phone! Ha. :p

Lol but I'm 22 and married, homeowner, having a baby :p lol, I love my parents though

I'm actually going to end up pre-ordering online, because:
1. Satisfaction of ordering online ;)
2. Possibility of early shipment
3. Stupid rep doesn't have to "set up" my phone, thus I get a literally untouched device!

Agreed... half the time they take it from the back already opened ... the last new phone I bought myself (d1) they brought me one with no screen protector... I was like.. uhhhh take that one back and get me another... and I ended up with bumpy keys :)

Clearly, We were best friends in a past life. -- seeing as the secret sister thing doesn't seem to be playing out ;)

I like the box idea, i think it's hilarious in its cornyness. I always wanted someone to surprise me like that, so I'll just do it for my mom instead -- going to be a while before I have non furry kids... I do lamely romatic things for my boyfriend as often as I can too.

I got married at 22... didn't work out for me  but if it had been the right person, I would have loved it. Congrads on the little one!

I never thought about it, but that is one other reason I like Best Buy -- no backrooms there either.

They usually have good prices and I think they have 90 day return policy?

Truly I thought about throwing in a non traditional statement about who he needs to keep her away from but I'm trying to behave and didn't want to offend Gapi since she is only 14, or get in trouble with any of our "parents" for stepping out of line

Touche! She clearly belongs in a tower where no one can reach her. Or at least get her a few older brothers and sisters to beat any nefarious types up and defend her honor.

I wouldn't want to offend Gapi and certainly hope he would never take it that way. Neither would I want to inject politics in a delightfully politics-free thread. Just observing the freedom people have these days to be who they are. :)

(I've actually been curious about the denomination that Steven leads, but figure this really isn't the place to ask and I'll PM him one of these days.)

I have a few questions about pre-ordering online for those that have done it before:
1) Can you still apply your loyalty discount, NE2, and any other dsicounts you have when you order online?
2) Can you order accessories at the same time? If so, do they typically arrive around the same time?

Thanks!!

Yes and yes

No kidding. The last time I asked them to please not restore from Google or attempt to setup Backup Assistant they just gave me a blank stare like I was crazy.

Or told them I wouldn't input my account for them, because it wouldn't matter with 2 step auth on until I'm at a pc. I literally can't login to my google account for you. (I did finally give in and setup the txt to phone number verification codes because I got annoyed one day though.)

I completely agree with you on people being able to freely be who they are.

Steven did answer that somewhere in here so I'm sure he would again.

I am 80/20 right now on in store over pre-order. I can't guarantee having someone home to sign for it on the day of delivery, but I know that my usual sales guy has offered to put one aside for me on launch day.

I would hate to have my phone sitting overnight in the carrier depot if we missed delivery.

I drove 20minutes at 730 to go to the FedEx place near me for my wifes droid inc when we missed the delivery

I never thought about it, but that is one other reason I like Best Buy -- no backrooms there either.

I can't speak for mobile phone purchases at Best Buy, but their reputation otherwise is dismal in some circles. Teaser prices w/complicated rebates, badgering at checkout for insurance coverage you don't need, high-priced "PC tuneup" services that really don't do anything beyond what the manufacturer has already done, and service personnel copying media files off of PCs brought in for service. I've had great service from specific sales people there, but usually avoid giving them my business.
