My battery is great...want to know why?

yes, it is :). I charged it up Sunday night. Monday evening I still had over 60%. Monday night I did not plug it in, I tuned off 3G though. This morning the battery status still showed ~60%.

So what did I do (or what did I NOT do)?

(1) I did not do the battery discharge-recharge thingy. BTW, if you really *fully* discharge a Li-ion battery you will kill it.
(2) I did not download any task killer/manager. This is supposed to be a
smart phone to kill things when needed.
(3) I do not use the Home button at all. I always use the back button.
my awake time is about 10%
(4) I do autosync, but my WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS is off.

I admit I am not a heavy user, though I have used up about 50 Mb data in 2 days.

I think the turning of 3G was overnight. That ... makes a lot of sense. If you're not gonna be using 3G and you want to keep your battery going, why not disable it when you don't plan on using it?

Yes it would make sense to turn 3G off at night ... unless thats when you charge it. I dont understand why people are looking to get multiple days of charge out of the phone. I unplug it at 6:00am and plug it back in around 11:00pm ... I havent had any battery problems and have had it since the release.

I guess it's really just nice to know that if you need to extend your battery life, you can. I'm a bit of a road warrior, and although I have a car charger, I'm not always in the car with the keys in the ignition. I was having issues maintaining decent battery life until a few weeks ago when I re-worked my routine. Though I did just order a higher capacity battery from seidio. Looking forward to receiving that.

So why don't I charge during the night when I could plug the thing in as well?

I only charge when its needed. The battery takes only ~300 charge cycles. The less times I charge the longer the battery lives.

As far as 3G - why whould I need it whiule I sleep?

Peter

You will get that many FULL charge cycles - below 20% to over 80%.

Li-Ion batteries LOVE partial charges, and prefer them to full charges.

I leave my phone plugged into the computer's USB 8 hours per day, every day. I avoid going through drain/charge cycles as much as possible.

Maybe every other week, my battery ever goes below 80%. Last night's 75% was very rare.

How to prolong lithium-based batteries

Just FYI, I think that this back button stuff is overrated. I do not use a task killer, gmail and calendar are set to autosync, seesmic is set to notify every 30 minutes. Right now the browser is sitting with the Buzz mobile page after hitting home to return home. Sometimes I hit back, but I almost always just hit home after going into various apps.

My awake time is 9%.

Perhaps you are right. I am new to this phone so I have a lot to learn.
I just gave my first impressions.

How do you turn off the 3g? I can't find it, still new to the phone and the battery life is killing me. It seems to drain at night while not in use!

Hold the power button, you'll see options for turning many things off. This is also how you choose to power off your phone. There are HTC Widgets for the WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G that you can add to any of your screens.

For some apps it may be, but for others it will close them out. Others will have their own exit/quit option when hitting menu. Getting in the habit for every app is helpful to some, me included.

Just to clarify, the option is not called "3G" - it is called "Mobile Networking", for both the press and hold menu on the power button and the HTC widget.

It is nice to know how long the phone can last. Suppose you go on a camping trip and you can't plug it in.....

Honestly ... if I am going on a camping trip I dont want my phone for anything except emergencys, so it would br turned off. The only thing I could think of that I would need it to last longer is if my wife or kids were in the emergency room for something ... but they do have phones there.

What's the setting called that allows you to change how often your phone checks the network for phone calls? I read it in a thread here about fixing the phone app. Though it might make the phone feature itself slower, couldn't you just set the phone to check the cell network less frequently? should save some battery. none of this would be a problem if you just bought an extra battery. I love having access to all my online features.

So then the question is: what is the difference between turning the phone off (power down) vs. Airplane mode.
The only thing I can think is that when you are in Airplane mode it turns back on faster...
Is there a downside turning the phone off and on often?
The reason I am asking this is that where I work I am in and out of places with no signal at all. If I am there with the phone on the battery will go dead fast.
So what is the best power down or Airplane?

Airplane mode would be better. It does turn back on much faster. Also, you can access calendar, games, etc..

Keep in mind that your phone uses a ton of battery to turn on when you have shut it completely down.
