Root [Solved] Do not take the OTA if you want to keep root. [superseded by new leak]

I have not seen an update yet. But he tweeted this earlier

http://twitter.com/#!/P3Droid/status/139022639187509248

Dhacker posted that they covered the forever root and zergRush root.

The update is just .894 it contains just a patch to remove and block root.

John can you also move this thread to the root section.

if I find a solid link I will post it.

I believe they have to make an effort to block root as per their contract with Verizon. If it was up to moto they wouldn't waist the time patching root exploits. We have to get Verizon to unlock the bootloader.

gl with that >.>. You are right thought. Motorola could spend their time getting us the udpates we need rather than patching our root access. A lot of users have been anticipating the update to fix the problems that currently exist. It's too bad Motorola is pressured to keep the bootloader locked by Verizon.

P3droid tweeted that moto closed both rooting procedures and forever root (guess it was not forever root) in the upcoming OTA. Given time I am sure we will have another way to root but until then if you want to keep root don't take the OTA.

Well I am considering upgrading to the Bionic. However by looking at some of yalls threads I am a little concerned.

Have yall figured out the Rooting issues yet? Also have yall been able to get Wireless Tether to work.... Not only Work but not just as an Ad Hoc Network. You cant use Ad Hoc Networks to connect to the Wii.

I really want a better phone but it MUST have those two things.

What can anyone tell me? :(

link? I want to see if there is a new update - My phone is doing stupid things after my FXZ testing last week....

You just can't stop your self can you :)

I would take all these warnings with a grain of salt. We had the same warnings with the DX that never evolved. Anyway took the plunge and went to the latest (7) build and am very happy. No more ringing in my earbud!

So you have tried this Version of Wifi Tether on the Bionic and it worked?... Also side note did it work for the Wii?

Yes that sounds awesome but what about the new OTA update that breaks root? Has that been addressed?

One more thing Are yall able to use Clock Work Mod to obtain reliable Nandroid backups?

Thanks so much for the info guys.... yall are really helping me make an informed decision. :D

The OTA hasn't been released yet and afaik it's not the official OTA. We don't know what the OTA will do to root and dont even know when they are going to release it. They keep pushing it back and another thread suggested February. If you're concerned about breaking root don't accept it unless you really need whatever it fixes. The leaked OTAs are at your own risk. At this moment those of us who are already on 7.7.893 have no way to upgrade to 7.8.894. There is a new radio and kernel in that OTA which may improve the signal issues some people are still having on 7.7.893.

And if yall have any Dev worth their salt (and I am sure you do) they will be able to extract the goodies such as the Radio and the Kernal and bake it into a nifty Rom.

Well its sounding more and more likely that I will be joining the Bionic Ranks.
On another note I am VERY dissapointed in the two other phones I was considering. The RAZR and the Galaxy Nexus AKA Nexus Prime.

My biggest problem with the RAZR is the Internal battery... No way to change it.

Then on the Nexus It has NO sd card with only 16 GB internal.
also the camera is only 5 megapixels. LAME!!!

So that is why I am putting so much hope in the Bionic.

One thing I do like about the RAZR though is the TOUGH screen.
I went to the Verizon store and the sales guy whooped out his keys and vigorously railed on the RAZR's screen.... WITHOUT A PROTECTIVE COVER MIND YOU.

Not one scratch... That was awesome. :D

Razr and Bionic both use gorilla glass so the glass strength is similiar between the two. While the Bionic is an awesome phone(depending on who you talk to :p), if I was buying today I would get a Rezound instead. I can understand choosing the Bionic over the Razr because of the battery though.

It's been reported that the Galaxy Nexus Prime uses something similar to Gorilla Glass. I believe the ones used on the Bionic and Razr is Corning Gorilla Glass while Samsung went with a different company who markets the same type of glass as Gorilla Glass. There's a video showing someone in Europe using his keys against his Galaxy Nexus Prime with no resulting scratches.

The only way we have been able to update our radios and kernels have been thru the leaked OTA updates. While the devs are able to extract whatever seemed valuable to them from the OTA updates they are not able to update our kernel/radio. This is the result of having a locked bootloader which prevents us from doing so. Same reason why we cannot change our kernel/radio with ease. Having come from the OG Droid I was used to having the unlocked bootloader which made making changes to the phone a breeze. I have read somewhere that they were able to figure out a way to downgrade the kernel but not the radio itself which prevents us from updating with the 7.8.894 OTA.

gotcha. I forgot about the locked boot loader deal. Well I mean are the Kernal and Radio really that bad? Is reception noticeably different than other phones?
Also is the rezound a phone or is that slang for RAZR?

Edit: Ok found the Rezound.... Looks awesome Checking into that now. LOL Well see.

Some people have it worse than others. I live in a 3G only area so it's not affecting me much at all. I occasionally lose 3G but that's once in a while and not that big of a deal for me. The OTAs are suppose to fix the intermittent connectivity most people are having. Some have said that the leaked OTAs have helped and some say it hasn't.

The issue which is known by VZW is supposed to be fixed in the OTA. Some have jumped ship for the RAZR which btw has all the same hardware as the Bionic and they too are having the same issues.

Two points ...

Point one ...

Everyone keeps using the term "leaked OTA" and I suggest that is very confusing. It is my understanding that there was a sort of incremtal "alpha" upgrade and a does it all "pre beta" upgrade. There is now apparently a "real beta" in "soak test".

John (see next message) did a lot of work with the "alpha" and "pre-beta" and can not get back to a state that will allow him to install the "beta".

None of these were OTA (Over The Air).

Point two ...

The Razr does not have a removable battery. There is an external battery that can be purchased and used that has a short cable the plugs into the USB port. I do not know how bulkey it is or how it interacts with the internal battery.

If that is the ONLY thinkg preventing someone from going to the Razr they might want to check it out.

(I chose the Bionic. If "feels" better to me.)

... Thom
