***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

this is VERY good news :) My one issue with most phone's camera's is the low-light performance.

IMO, cameras in phone shouldn't be compared to or try to replace a dedicated camera

It seems that GN follows I consider should be the design goals of a phone camera. Being able to go from "stand-by" to first shot quickly(and following shots), and to perform well in a variety lighting conditions(low light).

Anyone who wants a phone that will take the best pictures possible should pick up an iPhone, that's really the ONLY reason why I can see getting one.

However I'm very excited that the Galaxy Nexus will have no shutter lag and has the point to focus feature. I'm also looking forward to the panorama mode it has because I loved that with my LG Dare. The 1080p video isn't that important to me, I see myself shooting in 720p in most cases, 1080p just seems like overkill.

To me the camera looks more than good enough to keep me happy. I'm just excited to have such a gorgeous phone, this will be a major upgrade from my OG Droid.

The Hulk is strong, but you can still blow him up if you have a missile launcher. He usually just jumps out of the way or catches it, but come on, really? Jumping out of the way of a missile? Catching it? Not very realistic.

Top 5 strongest super heroes of all time:

1. Superman (almost too powerful, actually)

2. Thor (can manipulate energy and has Mjolnir, the magic warhammer that can open holes through space and time)

3. The Green Lantern (only limitation is his imagination)

4. Wonder Woman (super sex)

5. Han Solo (no explanation needed).

But Superman has his kryptonite, so I don't know how you would place him at #1. Just sayin'. And Han Solo....really? I chuckle.:D I must admit, I had a major...I mean MAJOR crush on Han Solo when I was 7. I even named my cat Harrison. (There aren't many ways for a 7 year old to express her undying love for a celebrity...naming pets after them is one of those ways. Don't judge.)

Is "The Roosevelt" still around? He's been having some Twitter discussions with P3Droid lately. Just wondering if he deciphered any of it. He always tweets in codes or something.

I'm sorry i can't keep up anymore. Every time i refresh there are 20 new pages....Haha
so if you still are a regular TR, sorry for not noticing....

Yup still around. I don't Twit or tweet so I don't know what's going on there. Still thinking the 8th looks good though

Well you could probably pay P3 for the update if you wanted it early lol

I've been very critical of P3......but that's one thing he doesn't do. He'll make updates available (if it makes sense) and post them right away. He'll also do a lot of nice developement tricks along the way.

So his personality may be a little controversial, but damn does he know what he's doing. We need P3 droid to continue his awesome development work with the rest of TBH. ;)

So I check the forum after class and see numerous posts calling for a change in the thread title for 12/8. I'm assuming there are recent "tips" from insiders? I'm aware of recent developments posted on phandroid like cellebrite and 4.1, but none of those point to the 8th in particular. Can someone please sum up for me what happened in the last few hours to warrant a clamor for an OP change?

Sorry to be lazy...but once I start thread searching I'm committed for more time than I can give right now. Thanks in advance ;)

P3Droid, Hansolo's sister, and random new poster(eyesonly), and a couple others have posted.

Either stating within the next week OR specifically mentioning the 8th

True story. George Lucas' dog was named Indiana. (and later referenced in "Last Crusade". He also got the idea for Chewbacca from his dog.

Actually he does have a Paid app that gives access to "leaks" earlier.. Its the TeamBlackHat app.

At this point, it's still rumors. I tried to quote any of the "big" posts here:

Apparently, Google chose the 5MP sensor for better low light performance, and from what I've seen in reviews, it is FAR better for night shots. So that's probably true.

As for the sensor being better, it isn't from the legitimate reviews I've seen. Outdoor shots are comparable, but indoor and low light shots are clearly better on the GNex than the SGSII.

I can't figure out why this is a positive thing, unless they think that the Gnex customer demographic is vampires?

4.1 is still Ice Cream Sandwich. :p A new name will come for Android 5.0, believed to already be in development, which is tentatively being called Jellybean. :)

This sounds reasonable, though it is not historically accurate. 1.5/1.6 were different names, right? 2.1 eclair?, 2.2 froyo, 2.3 gingerbread. It wasn't until 3.0 honeycomb jumped to 4.0 ice cream sandwich that we seemed to jump whole numbers with a name change.

Edit: Ninja'd in part.

Can't just "blow" the Hulk up silly Han, the big thinkers of the marvel community saw him as a threat and flung him at the Sun. He survived that conquered another planet and came back to Earth and started murdering every super hero he felt was involved (See World War Hulk)

Ugh. Come on. He's still flesh and blood. He's not an alien, like Superman. They should have stuck to the original concept: He's an alter ego of Bruce Banner when he gets pissed. He should be able to travel to other planets and conquer them. He can't be pissed 24/7. It's physically impossible. Also, why the hell hasn't anyone just killed him when he's Bruce Banner? No one can just point a sniper rifle at him when he's not looking?

I stopped reading comic books a while ago because I couldn't stand all these "alternate" universes, time travel, etc. They keep killing off superheroes and then bringing them back a few months later, as if nothing happened. They kill Batman, and then reveal that he was actually just thrown backwards in time.

It's so frakking aggravating.

Not sure if anyone here is a camera aficionado but if you are and are in the know . . .

The sensor for the Galaxy S II is allegedly better making the camera better than the Nexus (allegedly). Did Samsung do this because they could not get zero lag out of better sensors?

What I'm asking is did Samsung make a choice with this phone to have less quality to introduce a new feature until the other technology could catch up OR could they have included better sensors AND still had zero lag?

There's a couple things here going on all of which impact the performance of the camera.

1. It seems that Google wanted to tout the "no shutter lag" feature above everything else, with today's technology including battery tech, this would require a smaller MP sensor. 5MP seems reasonable as it take less energy and processor requirements to process the data from a 5MP sensor than an 8MP sensor.

2. I have read that google wanted to have good low light capability -- the verge said that stock (non hdr) low light and shadow detail is actually better than the iphone 4S. This makes sense as the size of the sensors are most likely the same but on the SGN there are fewer pixels to be effected by the light. More pixels = more noise. Engadget I believe said that the camera does not have a large dynamic range, which means how much contrast can be captured in an image. This is probably true as most phone camera's don't have good range.

3. Everyone talks about the sensor, but few speak about the lens. We don't know if this is a fast lens with and aperature of f2.2 2.4 or 2.8. This allows more light onto the sensor and provides a shallower depth of field to be in focus. In other words it will let the background be blurred while the subject remains in focus. The ip4s has an f2.4 and the rezound I think is f2.2.

Put all of this stuff together and you get a good, or not so good camera. It's hard to tell how good or bad the SGN camera is, as I've seen some great pics and some lousy ones. My guess is that for poorly lit indoor shots, the pics won't look good, and for well lit outdoor shots, they'll look great. Just like many cheap point and shoot cameras.

I think if they do give it a name, it'll be "Jellybean."

Jellybean is exactly what I've heard the next OS is codenamed. Although I highly doubt it will be 4.1. Probably a little higher in the revs than that. 4.5, 5.0? After that, it's K. Key Lime Pie maybe? I've actually heard speculation as KitKat, but I don't think they're going to use something trademarked.

Unfortunately, same was true for the previous rumoured date (November 21st) and the one before that (November 17th). And then all the sources will, come next week, suggest its delayed, not know what the hold up is, and the new date of December 11th or December 15th will be rumoured.

Rinse and repeat.

I meant to say he "shouldn't" be able to travel to other planets and conquer them.

For those saying the camera is worse than the SII or hearing that it is...what is the basis for this claim? I have not heard this at all and while the camera isn't a deal breaker for me, it is an important feature. I'm paying for the camera whether I want it or not. How good this camera is depends on whether or not I use it. So for every smart phone I buy, I am paying for a camera that I will or won't use. All of them have it now, so I can't just say that I don't want a camera on it because it's crappy.

The camera on the Nexus, from what I have seen, is very good for a phone. The aperture is wide enough to take decent low light (indoor) shots and that is the biggest feature of a camera. When you start getting into cameras that don't have wider apertures, then they raise the sensitivity (introduce more noise) and increase the amount of time the shutter is open (introducing higher chance for blur). The Nexus, from what I have heard, has an f/2.7 aperture. Compare that to several lenses I own that cost thousands of dollars for my dSLR, most are f/2.8, so the lens on the Nexus has a pretty decent aperture. The Rezound has an f/2.2, and I can tell you from in-store experience, it takes good low light shots. I took several in the store and they all turned out really well, to top it off, it was at night and the lighting in the store was pretty dim.

IIRC, Stephens Source had an early version of the camera that had an 8mp shooter. It was one of the 4 deltas that he said the early BGR feature list had on the gnex (BGR listed a 5mp). I think this fits with your theory

Ok so with the current status of things, I was able to confirm several things for you guys in regards to my original post:

  1. 32GB is the confirmed model, there are no plans for a 16GB model.
  2. 1850mah is the confirmed production battery capacity (some early development models originally came with 1750mah but were returned to factory).
  3. The current status of pricing is as previously set at $299 on-contract and ~$600 off-contract.
  4. Out of box devices will come in one of two scenarios that will depend on when and where the purchase order was made:
    • The device will come with 4.0.1 preinstalled and will prompt you for a 4.0.2 update upon activation.
    • The device will come with 4.0.2 at stock and will not prompt you for any further updates until 4.1 testing is concluded.
  5. 4.1 is currently in very limited testing at the moment (if you have this, you are most likely a tester or developer).
  6. Depending on the results of testing, 4.1 will be an update that is pushed publicly post-release or it may be held off for further fixes.

Unfortunatly, I don't have any data for you guys regarding which is the more likely OS version scenario but I can say that everyone will see version 4.0.2 upon release either at stock or with an update prompt.

I apologize again for the previous confusion and I will keep you guys posted as I receive more information and updates.

Who is testing 4.1? As far as I'm concerned once this phone is release the only thing Verizon should be testing is radio updates. Any other software updates should having not one damn thing to do with Verizon.
