Today during Mobile Congress, HTC CEO Peter Chou confirmed that they will bring Android 2.1 and new HTC Sense features to their Hero line of devices . It means that the new Sense UI and Android 2.1 will be available soon on Droid Eris ,Sprint Hero and HTC Hero for European markets.
The new HTC Sense comes with lot of new features like Friendstream, an app which is used to stay in touch with your Flicker, Twitter and Facebook friends all in one place. E-mail and calendar widgets are improved with better account management for the inbox and an agenda view as well. They also included a new full-screen weather app on the clock widget.
HTC improved more than just SenseUI

This is great news considering all the hype, but I do wonder if 3 UK will bother. They didn't seem very forthcoming with the idea of providing customers with the new firmware when I asked them about future updates the other day. Hmmm.

Don't worry about that, the call centre don't have a clue about the stuff they already have let alone the future. lol

Lol! Yeah, they've been pretty hopeless whenever I've asked anything remotely technical. :D

I'll probably take the plunge and root the phone if they don't provide an official patch. The slim chance of bricking it has scared me enough not to do it so far. I only got my Hero last Friday.

From a Hero user's point of view, frustrating if it has been put back further.

From another point of view, if you are releasing at least 2 handsets with the new version of Sense UI, do you want them to be slightly undercut by an existing handset? I'd doubt it, which now leads me to believe the Hero update will follow a week or so after the Legend & Desire are launched.

Yes, you may think they'd want to reward existing customers with a tasty new update, but remember, we aren't paying for the update, so they may as well go all out on advertising how awesome the new version of Sense + 2.1 is on their latest handsets before updating one that is 6 months old.

It jus seems like a p**s take. Nokia did that with the 5800 ME, they released a new update for it in november. my sim free one didn't get the update till feb. HTC have done exactly the same thing.
Oh well the important thing is that 2.1 is not gonna be rushed. Its frustrateing that again we are going to have to wait. I just hope its not delayed again when we get to March.

Just wish HTC would submit a launch date and stop with all the rumours. Pick a date whenever it will be and bladdy stick to it!! Simple

I completely agree with you there. I'd rather not hear anything about it untill they know they can release the product.
Similar to what Bungie do with their games releases.

Have read this thread and searched around but I have some questions, if I may.

Currently my HTC Hero is on Android 1.5 and I'm not sure what version of Sense.

Will the update take me to Android 1.6?
Will Sense also be updated at the same time?
When is this all important update coming?
Will my phone automatically update or do I have to download/find it?
Does the update come from my provider (3 / Three) or direct from Google?
Isn't there a compatibility issue between Android and Sense if one is updated and the other isn't, and vice versa?

I think that's all. Thanks for any feedback, and so sorry if these have been answered before.

No, it will be Android 2.1, as it said in the topic title ;)

Yes, Sense has been updated in order to run on top of Android 2.1.
When is this all important update coming?
Several sources (including T-Mobile UK) are saying some time next month, although HTC themselves are being quiet on the matter.
Will my phone automatically update or do I have to download/find it?
Depends on your network provider. Mostly, updates have come as an program that you run on your PC to update your phone, although rumours suggest that some providers will be doing an Over The Air(OTA) update, where your phone will download the update automatically.
Does the update come from my provider (3 / Three) or direct from Google?
It will be from 3.
Isn't there a compatibility issue between Android and Sense if one is updated and the other isn't, and vice versa?
Yes, hence the wait for the update while HTC update Sense to run with Android 2.1.
Hope that answers your questions :D
